I think the middleweight division is underrated, the boxers are lightning fast and have enough power to crush bones. For that I believe this is the most dangerous weight division and does not get the credit/attention it deserves.

Thanks for your thoughts. At 147 it seems to take a step up. Then again, at 160, there appears another shift. Obviously there is generally a gradient of power in each rising weight division, but these two start the wearer off clean shots ask the question to themselves. Respects.

Its also a division that is most available for average person. Average height of 5"9 or 5"10 and being in shape will get you at around 150-170lbs depending on fat %.

Really no idea how to explain my feelings towards Gerald McClellan. The whole animal abuse thing is horrible, and people say there is karma about what happened to him. But if you happen to watch the documentary about his last fight you will see that there is still a human being, and I am not justifying what he did. G-Man was so feared and he had everything to be a great champion. He had the speed, power and ironically he could really take a beating, his chin was so strong. Yet his head just couldn't take it. People say Nigel Benn caused McClellan the braindamage but for me personally the punches he took from Julian Jackson started it all. And Gerald took every hit like nothing, until the fight with Nigel. G-Man was only 25 years old when that happened. He was not even in his prime yet. His life was just starting. And so many factors were against him that day. A referee who had no idea what he is doing, Nigel being dirty, the completely unknown dude in McClellans corner who never thought "Hey maybe he is getting hurt, throw the towel", and Gerald himself, going to fights without a real trainer and a manager. It was just a perfect storm for the wrong reasons. Whatever McClellan did in his life, he already payed too much for it. Now blind, almost deaf and not able to walk by himself or without aid, his sister and guardian angel is taking care of him. Thats life I guess... You can be looking so mean and strong, but none is safe out there. I hope Gerald McClellan finds peace.
@peterpereira3653
@peterpereira3653 3 жыл бұрын
The real actual damage was done by Nigel Benn make no mistake about that.Because if the damage was done against Julian Jackson like many people assume.Gerald McClellan would have had much more clear signs of brain damage well before the Nigel Benn fight.The brain is too delicate for that amount of time to past and not have shown greater affected damage to Gerald McClellan.All said and done Benn took his best shots and fought back hard and landed his own best shots which clearly done tissue damage to the brain of Gerald McClellan. And just because a boxer seems to be taking punches well doesn’t mean they aren’t doing severe damage to that boxers brain tissue.Other cases of boxers collapsing and even dying have happened in the past in boxing.Where a boxer fought a particularly hard tough fight seemed okay on leaving the ring. And have ended up dying hours or even several days after the fight.Difference was in those past eras of boxing, they didn’t have access to more modern medical facilities and medical technologies and techniques that ended up saving the life of Gerald McClellan.As back in those days of boxing boxer Gerald McClellan would definitely have died with the brain damage injuries he had sustained by Nigel Benn that night.

@javiernegron2633 3 жыл бұрын
@@peterpereira3653 1) McClellan did show signs of serious brain damage after the Jackson fight, he was reported to be struggling seriously with headaches and bouts of confusion. 2) some people don't get those serious signs of brain damage (Jake LaMotta took beatings that would have ended most people forever and stayed perfectly lucid and clear-spoken until his death in his 90s), and oftentimes those signs of brain damage don't present themselves for yeaaars after the damage is actually sustained

I didn't know about the dog fighting thing until reading this comment. Utterly repugnant. And yet, it is very tragic that McClellan has suffered so much. I agree, it's a very complicated situation.

@@peterpereira3653man there were serious signs after the first Julian Jackn fight especially after the head butt in that fight McClellan was blinking constantly after that accidental head butt It's only because Gerald put his next few opponents away early including Jackson for a second time he already had a touch of brain damage before the Benn fight Nigel just finished him off but when you're fighting a man you can look at him and tell after so many rounds this dude can't even keep his mouthpiece in it's on you to be a good person and say hey man something's wrong with you or not doing this no more but most boxers don't do that plus the ref should've been a Mills Lane or Joe Cortez reffing not someone who doesn't even know how to speak English

A little wiki on Mcclellan, sad ending - After taking a knee and being counted out McClellan lost consciousness he was rushed to the hospital, had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. He spent eleven days in a coma and he was found to have suffered extensive brain damage. He lost his eyesight, the ability to walk unassisted and was reported as being 80 percent deaf. Sports Illustrated ran an article about the fight and its outcome one week after the fight. McClellan's family flew to be by his side, and later he was flown back to his home country. He has recently recovered some ability to walk, being helped by a cane, but he has not recovered his eyesight. In addition to being blind, his short-term memory was also profoundly affected. His three sisters, particularly Lisa McClellan, are responsible for his care. In a 2011 documentary broadcast by ITV (who originally screened the fight live in the UK), Lisa stated that Gerald is in fact not deaf, but that he has trouble with comprehension when spoken to. Tarick Salmaci, a Kronk Gym fighter claimed later in an interview that he sparred with McClellan some time before the Benn fight, and after being hit with a jab, McClellan started to blink hard and the session had to be stopped. McClellan initially claimed that he was thumbed but later admitted in the locker room that he was in fact seriously hurt. Salmaci said that he found strange that a fighter with McClellan's chin, wearing a headgear is being hurt by a jab, and that when he noticed McClellan blinking during the Benn fight the same way, he was immediately aware that he was in serious trouble.

hagler's biggest fights are an UD agaisnt a former lightweight, knocking out heanrs who was going up in weight and a close fight against leonard.... none of them were middelweight ,roy fought toney and bernard who are two of the best middelweights of all times , and then he went up in weight in mutiple weight division up to heavyweight something that hagler refused to do even once

Gerald McClellan, or "M'Quellin" as Don King called him, was not the victim of Nigel Benn nor any other single fighter. His injuries were accumulative. Perhaps it was a slightly stronger nervous system that allowed him to absorb more punishment than a man should. The point is that no one person is to blame for his unfortunate injuries. His current state is the result of a series of powerful blows over a great many fights. I think it is a disservice to lay the blame on Nigel Benn.
@stevieg667
@stevieg667 4 жыл бұрын
InformationIsTheEdge Could also be that McClellan sacked off Emmanuel Steward as his coach, replacing him with the patently out of his depth Stan Johnson, that he had to shed about 30lbs to get down to super middle leaving him dangerously dehydrated as well as latent damage.

There were reports that McClellan had vision issues while training. True, false, or exaggerated, who knows?
@InformationIsTheEdge
@InformationIsTheEdge 3 жыл бұрын
@@Salieri47 Back in the day I looked at this story pretty close but I cannot cite any source so you may want to double check me. I'd picked up somewhere that during his training camp, leading up to the fight with Benn, a sparring partner gave McClellan a serious punch that brought one of the trainers over to look at McClellan and it was the trainer that discovered the vision issue. My guess, being a fighter, McClellan fluffed it off like it was nothing so camp could resume and he could go get paid. Just my guess though.

+Harri Rifhad Best way to fight GGG is to stand and fight like Benn, but Eubanks chin was better than Benn`s, Eubank would make the mistake of backing off too much against GGG. If Chris stood and fought he had the punch to get respect.

Mark Ant They both hit very hard.... Likely harder than Genady, but in a different, explosive power delivery as opposed to just strength...... Prime Eubank and Benn would KO Genady imo..... Maybe Watson too.

Harri Rifhad GGG has a great chin Eubank couldn`t stop him because he would be backpeddling a lot Watson didn`t punch hard enough to stop Genady, Benn`s the only one on the list who punched as hard or harder! Benn at middleweight mauy have punched harder than GGG but he didn`t have Genady`s defensive skill and though Benn became better trained at super middle his punch didn`t have the same effect at the higher weight so take from that what you will!

No one smashed GGG's face like that. He couldn't even KO Canelo either. Canelo walked him down. And Deryvachenko got robbed but you GGG fangirls cry robbery against Canelo yet even GGG fans admitted Deryvachenko did enough to beat GGG. Even GGG's face expression proves me right. And that time he didn't have Abel Sanchez with him.

It's a damn shame Gerald didn't fight long enough to be talked about as one of the greats cause he was on his way there. People talk about the DEVASTATING power of Julian Jackson & Gerald knocked him out cold twice. Mugabi gave Marvelous all he could handle and the GMan knocked his spark out. Can't really consider his loss against Benn a loss considering Gerald moved up in weight, almost KO'd him in the 1st round (Nigel got a long count), and was literally dying as the fight went on, and STILL managed to come back and almost KO Benn in the 8th I believe, all while his brain was bleeding.
