At long last I found and fixed my hesitation problem, a vacuum/air leak. troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.

I'm glad my advice helped you sort your problem out, as I said I tightened my jubilee clips and that helped, I'm going to use my home made smoke detector as soon as it stops raining, you should make one mate with your engineering back ground there easy.

Air leaks can be diagnosed by observing the short term trims reduce fueling when switching from idle to say holding at 2000rpm. As more metered airflow is added the effect of the air leaks is reduced and the ecu will compensate.

No worries Des, I'm still figuring out a lot of the live data side of it, I thing that's probably going to be a lot more help that the fault codes are half the time.

Paul1962 I also have the Duremetric tool& software but more cumbersome to use with my laptop. So far the car has been running great since the MAF problem. I am thinking of buying the catless resonator by Circuit Werks and putting back the Circuit Werks Catback muffler. I took it off and replaced the OEM muffler because it droned badly. Apparently according to the supplier, it will solve the droning. Will try.😊

it's always worth a try, mine is not to bad, now the car is running right I can keep it low in the gears so you don't get to much noise, it's mainly around 2600- 2700 that it drones and, well now anyway it's easy to avoided those rev's, below I just get a back ground rumble and above it's nice and sharp, I'm thing next time I may go for the old bypass values so you can have the best of both world's, mind you last time I tried having the best of both worlds she slapped me round the face! lol

hi again paul I just noticed your OBD2 reader was in OL (open loop) you need it to be in CL (closed loop) to look at your readings

Hi Nick, yeah I realise that now, been watching loads of videos on diagnostics with a scan tool, I come to the conclusion I need one that shows graphs, and shows the 02 readings as well as fuel trims.The success was short lived as it's started playing up again, it' seems every time you try something it runs fine for about a day then goes back to the way it was. Clive came down Saturday, he's the mechanic that I an going to start doing videos with. He thinks it's a coil pack braking down, so I've gone back to a process of elimination, I've order a new maf sensor although the readings look fine.As I have 2 spare coil packs I swapped 5 and 6, based on the reader saying the misfires were on 4, 5 and 6. As usual the car ran better, but I still had an erratic misfire at around 2k. One of the 2 packs I took off had a crack in it and showed signs of shorting. The other tested good so I swapped it with number 4 and the misfire went, so the old number 4 coil pack is suspect, but it has tested good, could be braking down under load? Well please it was running better, not right, but better, then last night back to running like a bag of shit again! I will fit the new maf sensor when it arrives and if that doesn't sort it I will buy a couple of coil packs and start swapping out the right hand bank. I would then have eliminated 02 sensors, coil packs and maf sensor and I think we can rule out an air leak. Could be a plug so they may be on the list to change as well.

Hi Paul.. the engines going to appear to run what we used to call rich when cold cos the ECU is effectively pulling the choke a bit. The bit that confuses me a bit though, is if you've got or had an air leak, thats going to result in a weak mixture surely as its upping the air intake in proportion to fuel thus running more lean not rich

Mike G Oxygen sensor will see a week mixture and short term fuel trim will correct the 14.7.1 fuel mix ( I think )👍🏾

hello i got Cayman S 2008 - i got rough idle and on low rev (under 3 500rpm) it has no power, when i go fast, it runs as new. i think i got some problem with vacuum, please where to start. thank you

Hi, first question, when was the last engine service? just to rule out things like plugs and air filter. I think my first thought would be a partly blocked exhaust system. you can try loosening a joint/remove an o2 sensor and see if that makes a difference. alternately try a cat cleaner/decarbonized like Cataclean. I use Cataclean when I service the engine. as for vacuum/air leaks, what are the fuel trim figures? if you have an air leak they will be adding more fuel to compensate. a smoke test is relatively inexpensive and will rule out air leaks, or you can connect a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold. vacuum should go to zero at full throttle. hope this helps, let my know how you get on.

600 degrees is the temp your O2 sensors start working at .... you need to let it warm up before taking readings of fuel trims mate

Hi, enjoy your vids. I've got a 2.5 Boxster that kept stalling when slowing down for traffic lights. Now it won't start at all. Did you ever get your hesitation problem fully solved after you fixed the jubilee clip bit?

Hi, sorry for the late reply. my hesitation problem has slowly improved over time, but not gone completely. it is very subtle, and one of the problems I face is a lot of garages feel that it is perfectly acceptable for a 27 year old car, and i should learn to live with it! I am now thinking of trying a rolling road to try and find the problem.

So you and Dan forgot to tighten the clamps when you cleaned the throttle body ?

possible, but not necessarily, things do work lose or settle in with time, the boots are rubber and flex all the time and subject to temperature change from engine and climate, it's also been an on going intermitant problem pretty much since i had the car, and has started to return again last night! so rechecking again today

Did you find the cause of this? I currently have a p2198 code that’s driving me crazy I can feel a very faint bit of air behind the rear of the connecting tube on the right inlet manifold

Hi, When you say right manifold, I take it you mean bank 1, the drivers side, on a right hand drive car? mine was the small black vacuum tube that comes off the connecting pipe. you can test for an air leak with an inert substance to temporally seal the suspected leak, I've used everything from soapy water, ease start, WB40 or a blob of grease. you are looking (and listening) for any change in the way the engine runs. For complete piece of mind have a smoke test done, but for some reason not many garages do them in the UK. if memory servers me right, p2198 is bank 2 (passenger side on a right hand drive car). I am assuming you have ruled out the actual O2 sensor its self? you can try swapping O2 sensors between banks and see if the code swaps sides? (I keep a spare sensor for testing purposes). The last thought I can offer is, if it is not the sensor, it is something that is only related to bank 2, as it is not effecting bank 1. hope this is of some help, please let me know how you get on.

@@Paul1962 Hello Paul just noticed your reply. After another cold day chasing this... All new o2 sensors (Bosch) and all new injectors (Bosch) and all new coil packs, last ones were cracked (beru) and .... ... a new fuel pump (long story). Only thing that's not new is the sparks, because I'm trying not to throw parts at it hahaha Although I buy into what you said in a previous video, the ethos that these are old cars, with individual parts reaching their expiry dates, replacement parts are not entirely a waste of money. I can feel a very faint bit of air on bank 1. Im not 100% its a leak as this is right at the back of the alternator and it could just be making it feel like moving air. So I took the bank 1 inlet manifold off to check for anything that might be under there... on my car there are no actual lines under the inlet tubes on this side, but while I was in there i changed the manifold gaskets... took forever to arrive from design911, seems to be the only stockist in the uk. Bolted back up and still feel the air, so assuming now it must be the alternator or the belt causing the air movement. Over on bank 2, I've just changed over the purge valve, engine side, under the inlet manifold, turned out to be one of the easier jobs on the car. I checked the old valve and it did seem to have a very slight leak when compared to the new one, however hard to tell from blowing on the thing haha. Cleared the code p2198 with my scanner and took for a drive, Not sure if it was the placebo effect of thinking id resolved the problem but the car did seem to come to life. Much more power throughout the range. This may well have been an eager right foot. The CEL did not reappear on the dash. However after getting. back to the garage and another scan it is showing p2198 as pending. so I'm thinking that it's not yet resolved. It usually takes a few warm up cycles for it to come back on. Im thinking It might be a saturated charcoal canister, I noticed you done this, as well as the valve at the wheel arch side, so that's my next move. Again waiting on parts to come in. When I open the fuel cap to fill her up she is making a lot of noise from the filler neck, burbling / air noise. No difficulty in filling. I'm also thinking about doing a jimmy rig smoke test with a plastic bottle, and my air compressor. I think I will check if my car has a brake booster line and start there. The annoying thing is the car runs perfectly well, with plenty of power and no hesitation. These things are sent to test you. I meant to add my live data in closed loop is - O2 Sensors B1S1 - (-0.008ma) B1S2 - (0.595v) B2S1- (0.027ma) B2S2 - (0.055v) Short term fuel trims at idle B1 0% B2 0% If anyone else is having this problem please let me know or if I might have any info to help please reply. @@tperry88 Morning Thomas, pull the plugs on bank 2 to see if they really are running rich? The plugs should be light brown in colour. There's lots of info and photos on the net to help you diagnose your plugs. I know you said they are new O2 Sensors, but did you try switching left and right banks to see if the code changed to a bank 1 code?

@@Paul1962 Hello Paul So an update. Let me just say my first port of call for p2198 was the exhaust. I had a reputable garage do some welding to eliminate this before I went any further. Well I carried out a smoke test today. Baby oil, heated in a jar and attached to the exhaust tip by a balloon. SMOKE immediately started puffing from several pin holes at the collection pipes and a hole just after the cat, immediately before the down stream sensor. The garage who were supposed to have welded the pipes screwed in some nuts and covered in gun gum. The smoke was coming from behind the gun gum. I took them at face value, should have checked the work had been carried out correctly. This will be my first telephone call tomorrow morning. Complete waste of time On the bright side, I smoke tested the top side and nothing. I also changed the spark plugs, £34 from eurocarparts with the daily discount so not too bad. The plugs that came out looked brand new, so will keep them in the parts pile. While I was under the car I noted a small oil leak coming from the 32mm nut that sits at the base of the engine. I believe this is the timing chain tensioner. I did not want to pull this out to change the crush washer, as I believe you need to lock the cams, so just tightened it down (tight by hand, couldn't find a torque value) and let it run. Seems to have stopped now. So the car goes in on fri for welding of the exhaust, lesson learned. If this doesn't clear the CEL I will swap the sensors bank to bank and see if that shows up anything. Although I think its obviously going to be the exhaust leaks that are causing it. I will let you know how I get on.

@@tperry88 Cool, One of the things I hate about engine management systems is first you have to fined out if the fault is with the engine or with the engine management system! I brought a small duck tail that replaces the lift spoiler, tried to fit it today, what a nightmare! they leave the how to fit it bit for you to figure out.

if you take your car for a spin while you record live data you will get more accurate results
