the reason you didn't really see much of Lay is because he hasn't really been active in EXO since he is a really famous artist in china. There's political problems between Korea ans Chin so SM kinda give him small parts and small appearences in the music videos but not too much. What you saw in the "Obsession" MV was that EXO's doppelgangers were actually their alter ego clones and they were using their superpowers, such as Chanyeol with his fire power, Sehun uses his wind power to deflect the arrows, Baekhyun uses his power of light as a saber in the fencing battle, and Suho (the one with red hair) controls water in the room with all the pictures of water, etc. to fight their other selves. You see the planet on fire in the end of the MV because it's supposed to show how the world is coming to an end as EXO (the good guys in all black) and X-EXO (the evil ones in the colorful outfits with crazy hair and makeup) battle for control, etc. (Each of the members are playing 2 different characters -- there are only 6 people in this MV.) X-EXO has been created by the evil Red Force and EXO and X-EXO are fighting each other. EXO are trying to prevent X-EXO from taking over and corrupting humanity and X-EXO are trying to stop EXO from finding the Tree of Life and putting the two halves back together and restoring peace, etc. If you want to understand EXO's MVs then you need to know that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and it is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept -- and since then, everything SM does branches off from that storyline. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet Exo and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one, if not all of them, using their powers. Now you also need to be aware that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama", because the EXO-K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the EXO-M version focuses on the M members and their powers. However, since then, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 members.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions, but they still produce almost all of their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group as EXO with 9 members. However, in the "Obsession" MV there are only 6 members -- Suho, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, Kai and Sehun -- because 2 of the members -- D.O. and Xiumin -- are on hiatus during this comeback as they serve in the military; and due to the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, Lay -- their Chinese member -- was unable to participate in activities with the group. So each new MV or project from EXO tells another part of the story, and over the years we fans have started to create a timeline and idea of what we think each part of the story is telling us. However, the introduction of "Obsession's" part of the story really threw all of our theories for a loop and it has made us question everything we have ever thought was happening in EXO's storyline. The MV starts out with the red and blue light because it's supposed to represent how EXO are currently battling with X-EXO and the Red Force for control. In EXO's MVs when you see red light or anything that is red, this represents the Red Force, and when you see blue light or anything that is blue, this is thought to represent EXO. Therefore, when you see red and blue in one scene or purple -- red and blue mixed together make purple -- this is showing how the line between the two sides is being blurred and they are fighting each other, etc. Since "Obsession" some think maybe EXO has been trapped somewhere from the very beginning and it has been X-EXO that we have been following all along. But I think it's still even more complex than that. I think at times we have been watching EXO and at times we have been watching X-EXO -- with the release of "Obsession" we have only just discovering that the story hasn't necessarily been showing EXO the whole time. With the new information provided to us through "Obsession," it also makes me question how Lay fits within the X-EXO/EXO storyline. Maybe he is one of the members who has been able to break free or avoid the Red Forces' control. In Lay's solo MV for "Sheep," the Allen Walker relift version, we see everything burning outside as if an apocalypse is happening. Maybe "Sheep" is showing us the planet burning from Lay's viewpoint, like we see the world burning at the end of the "Obsession" MV. Also, I believe that the storyline in "Obsession" is connected to SuperM's debut "Jopping" MV storyline. If you pay attention to what Baekhyun and Kai were wearing in "Obsession," those outfits are very similar to the black outfits that Baekhyun and Kai are wearing in the "Jopping" MV. Kai is even wearing the same backpack parachute in both MVs. Which seems to be SM Entertainment's way of making sure we see the connection between those MVs. So it is thought that, as part of SuperM's storyline, EXO has gathered the best of the best of SM's groups -- EXO, Taemin/SHINee, NCT/WayV -- to help them battle the Red Force and maybe eventually take down X-EXO. Just like the Marvel Avengers come together as individual superheroes with their own storylines to create the Avengers and to fight evil, it is thought that SuperM is coming together to create the ultimate supergroup to help EXO fight the evil and corruption inflicted on humanity by the Red Force. Unfortunately, to make it even more difficult to understand, each part of the story is not necessarily in chronological order, so we as EXO-L (EXO fans) have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, song lyrics, albums, concert VCRs, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. And not only are EXO's and SuperM's MVs and storylines connected, but pretty much all of SM's groups have storylines and concepts that connect together, which is designed to become part of one giant graphic novel or movie in the SM Culture Universe. if exo calling you ‘baby’ is your thing, then ‘call me baby’ is a must. it’s got the most iconic ‘baby girl’. an easy way to differentiate the rappers at first is chanyeol has the ears and sehun has the brows. chanyeol’s voice is a lot more gravelly and husky compared to sehun’s as well. in earlier videos, chanyeol won’t be dancing at the front anywhere near as much as sehun who’s a dancer.

The song is called "Tempo" and the album is named Don't Mess Up My Tempo, so, the tempo keeps speeding up and slowing down. I think the change in tempo is also supposed to mirror the uncertainty and unsteadiness that EXO are feeling within the storyline in the MV. However, if you read the lyrics, you see that the song is talking to a girl and they are telling her, "Don't mess up my tempo." And yes, part of the tempo in the song is created by the squeak of what is thought to be bed springs. However, as with everything EXO does, there are duel meanings depending on how deeply you want to interpret the song and MV. On the surface the song and MV is meant to be enjoyed by the casual watcher and listener like you would any song on the radio, but if you want to delve in deeper and explore EXO's storyline, then there is so much more going on. As an SM Entertainment group, it shouldn't be a surprise that EXO are amazing vocalists -- hence the a capella part in the song. That is just what SM is known for. You can't be an SM artist without having amazing vocals and dance skills. That's just a fact about the type of people SM selects to become part of its company. All of SM's artists were first chosen for their visuals, vocals and/or dance skills, and even the rappers get intense training as vocalists. That is why SM is known as the vocal powerhouse of the industry. And EXO is a perfect example of that. The aesthetic of the "Tempo" MV is centered around the color red because the setting is supposed to be depicting the members under the Red Forces' control. Without going into too much detail -- there is so much going on in EXO's "Tempo" MV that it's hard to grasp it all -- what fan theories think is happening in "Tempo" is it is showing the members of EXO all trapped in separate dimensions. Each of those rooms, could possibly be a different dimension and that is why you see the glitches and why you hear Xiumin and Baekhyun with that computerized voice, because they aren't all in the same place at the same time, so their voices are being distorted as they try to connect between dimensions, etc. They also still could be trapped in different rooms within the maze, like what we saw them in their "Overdose" MV. For several of EXO's MVs we believe they are still trapped within the maze and they are continuously trying to find their way out. The maze seems to affect their connection to their powers and it clouds their minds and dulls their senses, so not only are they fighting the Red Force and X-EXO, but they are also struggling to break free from the fog the Red Force has them in. That's why you see some of the members just lazily sitting around and kind of blankly staring off into space at times. Baekhyun is the one that is singled out in the MV and he is the one standing above everything looking down, so this is one example of where we think that maybe he is the only one who has avoided the Red Force's control and he is observing everything that is going on from the outside. You see Chanyeol being interrogated by Chen with the inkblot test and that is thought to be the members trying to figure out who are the real EXO members and who are the evil X-EXO members created by the Red Force -- or who are the real members and who are the clones. At this point everyone is suspicious of each other and no one can be trusted. As you may have noticed, halfway through the MV Chanyeol's eyes and hair change color, so some think that this is either showing two different versions of Chanyeol who appear in two different time periods or dimensions, or one is Chanyeol the EXO member and one is Chanyeol the X-EXO clone. Often, when you see a character in one of SM's MVs with blue eyes or different eye colors this usually means they are not who they appear to be. The "Chess game" is thought to be supernatural EXO chess, and I don't think it's a game they are playing, but I think maybe it's something they are using to try to decipher a clue or figure out a way out of wherever the Red Force has them trapped at the moment. It's unclear right now what that scene is really telling us, but I have a feeling things will become clearer in the future as more of EXO's storyline is unveiled in future MVs and as SM's SM Culture Universe storyline continues to evolve. You also see Sehun on the motorcycle in this MV, which I now think is connected to the scene where we see him driving a motorcycle in EXO's "Lightsaber" MV and sitting on the motorcycle in their new "Don't Fight the Feeling" MV. In the very last scene, that is Baekhyun with that cube. I am not sure what that means, but I am sure it's foreshadowing something to come in the future with EXO's storyline. EXO's Chinese member, Lay, is in this MV, but you won't see or hear him sing or dance because you watched the Korean version, and at this time, because of the political issues between China and Korea, the Chinese government only gave him permission to appear in the Korean version of "Tempo", but he wasn't allowed to participate in the song. If you want to hear Lay sing you will have to watch the Mandarin version. Nothing in this MV is random or done just because, even the smallest of detail has been planned out to either connect to something to do with EXO's storyline from past MVs or it will become a key part to help explain something in one of their future MVs.

Lay, hasn't been able to actively participate with EXO since 2016. Lotto was his last MV with them, prior to his participation on their most recent comeback/special album "Don't Fight The Feeling". This album is solid gold, by the way, you really will want to give it a listen (title track and MV + 4 B-sides). You will see Lay in their earlier videos, somewhat, but SM always did him dirty and he was never really given his fair share of lines or center time. Much like my boy Sehun. He wasn't able to participate due to tensions between China and South Korea. China didn't like Lay working for and making money for a South Korean company, rather than for this motherland.

Fan theories believe that "Lotto" is the prequel to "Monster." "Monster" is from EXO's EX'Act album and "Lotto" is from their EX'Act repackaged album, which came out a few weeks after "Monster" in 2016. So, to understand the story in "Lotto" and "Monster" you have to connect the two storylines. How I interpret things is that the story starts in "Lotto" as EXO goes undercover and works to take down the gambling ring, which is thought to probably be run by the Red Force, and now that we know about EXO's clones, from their "Obsession" storyline, maybe even X-EXO are involved. Fun fact: Kai -- EXO-K's main dancer -- isn't dancing in the "Lotto" MV. As you saw, Lay -- EXO-M's main dancer -- and Sehun -- EXO-K's other main dancer -- are the dancers highlighted in "Lotto." Kai was injured during this time and couldn't dance, which is why you see him sitting down in the MV. In live performances at this time, Kai is absent when Lay is part of the performance because he is still recovering. However, when Kai is back performing the song, Lay was absent because he was busy doing solo activities in China. If you watch any live TV network performances of "Lotto" you might also notice that they change the title of the song to "Louder" and the lyrics are changed to use the word louder instead of lotto as well. Gambling is illegal in Korea and it's one of those things that are banned from being talked about in mainstream media. So in order to make the song TV- and radio-friendly they had to change everything to "Louder." I think the two stories in both "Lotto" and "Monster" actually overlap. I think both MVs take place in the same location and around the same time frame, and in each MV you see the members in different moments as they try to destroy everything to do with this gambling ring. You see them breaking everything in both MVs and you see them smash the car in "Lotto," and in "Monster" you see the car has now been set on fire, and they burn the money and other things in "Lotto" as well, etc. At the end of "Lotto" you see the police or FBI have come in and are just starting to take the members into custody, but if you remember in "Monster" it shows all the members have now been arrested. So I see it as the fight starts in "Lotto" and continues in "Monster." At the end of "Monster" all the members were now in custody and Baekhyun rescues them as he releases them from the back of the police van allowing them to escape, etc. The birds you see in the cage are roosters -- cock fighting roosters to be exact -- and they are another form of gambling. And the dogs are probably guard dogs like what criminal enterprises use as part of their security to deter someone from causing trouble or wanting to rob them, etc. The dogs are thought to be part of the Red Forces' security efforts. Don't worry, SM and EXO don't like animal cruelty either, that's the whole point they are trying to make. It's just another form of evil that comes with gambling. Also remember, in the "Obsession" MV we see EXO are the members in all black and X-EXO are the members in the colorful outfits with the crazy makeup and hair. So, if you notice, in "Monster" the members are all in black for part of the MV (In "Monster" we also see EXO in black and red outfits, which we have now started to think is supposed to be X-EXO in those scenes because of the red on their outfits), and in "Lotto" they are pretty much in black or dark neutral colors, so that is why I think the story is being depicted from EXO's point of view. You also may notice that in "Monster," and in parts of "Lotto," Chanyeol has red hair. But at the end of "Lotto" when he is being arrested, he has blond hair. I think this also might mean that the Chanyeol with red hair is his X-EXO clone, while the blond Chanyeol is the good EXO member who is undercover, trying to accomplish his tasks here on Earth and help the girl, etc. So, in "Lotto" and "Monster" I think what we are watching are the EXO members trying to take down X-EXO and the Red Force and stop the evil and corruption that the Red Force is inflicting on the world, which is depicted here as corruption through illegal gambling. We are not really sure what the girl takes from Chanyeol at the end of "Lotto", but it definitely wasn't money. If you pay attention to the lyrics, one of the English lines is, "I don't need no money." That is why they burn the huge stack of cash. Most theories agree that the currency that EXO values the most is flowers. There is an overwhelming use of flowers in many of their MVs, and as you see in "Love Shot," for example, they aren't collecting money but flowers. And in EXO-CBX's "Hey Mama" and "Blooming Day" and in EXO's "Love Me Right", etc. you see them with flowers. My theory is that the girl is somehow connected to EXO's quest to find and protect the Tree of Life and that is why at the end of "Lotto" you see her secretly take something -- which, if you pause the MV and zoom in, you will see looks like a small video tape -- to somehow help them in their quest. The video tape is thought to be the video that D.O. is filming with the camcorder in the middle of "Lotto." It's still unclear at this point how the girl fits in the storyline, but I think, or at least I hope, that in the future we will discover more about her and what significance she has within the story. As mentioned before, some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs -- like in "Lotto" -- is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more. It's been seveal years since "Lotto" came out and I have seen the MV dozens of times, and each time I watch it I still see something different and am still working to unravel more clues. But "Lotto" and "Monster" are the two EXO MVs that have me the most confused. I'm still struggling to really grasp the full story those MVs are trying to tell. I think part of the reason why I find these two MVs so confusing, is the fact that they depart the most from the linear storyline and the story jumps back and forth between the two MVs so much that it's difficult to put the events in order to really make a clear picture.

If you ever listen to an EXO album I recommend the 2nd and 3rd albums. They are truly top tier.

Sehun, your rapper man with the eyebrows, is also a main dancer 🤭 He released his first solo song On Me with a track mv (like a mini mv, while the complete song is available on audio) i would recommend, as well the dance practice that fans have uploaded on YT after he went live on insta with the choreographer and danced it live. Lay doesn’t show up a lot in recent exo MV’s sadly. He’s Chinese and South Korea and China having tensions for some reason affects Lay’s ability to be with the group but it also just feels like SM mistreating him.. there are a few MV’s where different members aren’t there because of military service (Obsession didn’t have DO and Xiumim for example).
