Garen and Ellie find out what if they are having a girl or a boy! Garen starts on the mobile for the Baby Crib they built last week while Ellie figures what to do with the left over pallet boards. We have been making several Hypertufa pots over the last few weeks and it’s time to share with you our progress. With new leather paint, Bree and Shae test out their painting skills on an old pair of boots. Join in the fun this week! We are glad you are here :)

Garen and Ellie are obviously ridiculously in love, they glow at each other, so pleased for them with the baby girl! I really hope everything is going well for Ellie, my baby just turned 20 and it's freaking me out a little. Time goes by so fast!

We use diesel fuel as a release agent .. when loading the liquified mud. , Take a vibrating sander (use the edge ) and vibrate the loose mixture so it settles evenly around the entire form ..

To help your pot making mixture fill your moulds evenly try holding a non rotating sander against the mould. The vibrations will keep air pockets from forming.

you should make more pots around the tree to form a flower in the other pots you could plant spices and herbs for the kitchen.

I know I have nothing to do with you making your pots but a suggestion from having been a little bit concrete work put mineral oil on your concrete forms or your pot forms before you put your Mixon that way it'll release and it will not carry color over to the cement or whatever Parts you're making

I made a bunch of hypertufa pots and items about 15 years ago, I would suggest a minimum of 2" thick, but thicker is better. Most of the 2" pots I made have since broken down, but the 3" are still doing well
@jerrywhidby.
@jerrywhidby. 4 жыл бұрын
I thought hypertufa is porous. Won't they leak water?
@saltyspirateden
@saltyspirateden 4 жыл бұрын
@@jerrywhidby. yes, the water slowly soaks thru them, thats why the thinner pots break down so fast. On the other hand, It also helps to promote moss growing on the outside. I made several 3' birdbaths with hypertufa, and ended up having to seal the basins to hold water, but at least they were still light enough to move around, regular concrete was too heavy.
@jerrywhidby.
@jerrywhidby. 4 жыл бұрын
@@saltyspirateden I was wondering if it was a good idea to put one indoors. Couldn't they ruin an indoor floor?
@saltyspirateden
@saltyspirateden 4 жыл бұрын
@@jerrywhidby. I''ve only used my projects outside. I can say that stuff (lichens, moss, worms, bugs, stuff) grows between the bottom and what it sits on. If it sits on a wood floor, I would expect damage. Probably would be OK on concrete or tile, or with some type of moisture barrier

Always oil your molds when using concrete mix, always use a stick or paint stir stick to push down your medium, and always vibrate or tap your mold once it's filled to remove air pockets. My husband used to work for a concrete statuary company and I used to watch him mold and un-mold statues all the time. The ones for gardens, cemeteries, parks, etc., you wouldn't believe how intricate the molds are and how much jiggling and vibrating goes into getting the air bubbles out. Fine steel wool works very well for sanding smooth rough areas too.

Just a suggestion, next time u do a large Hypertula pot, once you get the grout inside the forms run the longest drill bit you have (on your cordless drill of course) all around the grout- between the forms , which will eliminate any air pockets or gaps in the final product and make it smooth as glass without having to sand.

Try vibrating the outside mold pot while the concrete is still wet to get out any air pockets so the entire pot is solid! A hand sander without any sandpaper on it should work, or even tapping all around the sides with a rubber mallet or something like that.

Love your projects! Have you considered greasing up the pot molds to ease the release? You could also build in some straps kind of like a macrame hanger crossed with rebar that you put into cement to strengthen and provide leverage to pull it out of the mold. No need to drill holes if you want a hanging pot if straps are built into hypertufa. Does that make sense? In my head it is genius! lol

GRATZ ON THE BABY GIRL! IF you OIL the outside of the pots the plastic (the outer pot wont have to be destroyed and the bags will slide out easier). And the texture on the pots themselves will be smother . In concrete you use industrial oil to prevent the forms from sticking to the concrete (you can use old oil from your cars or virgin oil) . Have fun with the pots

It was one you designed not someone else's. It looks great. Glad you added the color it looks so nice next to the Mesquite it looks like it would in the deasert. It is your "bespoked" planter. Paints on showes look cool. Love you guys. Have a good week.

A good tip to prevent mosquitoes in still water is adding a wee bit of dish soap to break the water tension. Then no bugs can stand on top of the water and no larvae can breath at the surface.

I’m not sure if it’ll translate to pot making, but when pouring concrete, if you wipe down the wood framing surfaces with diesel it helps the dried cement not stick to the mold. Like butting a cookie sheet

When I have seen this demonstrated it was molded over a foam boxes. Then free sculpted to look like stone, with the drainage holes added before it hardens too much to make it easly done, but solid enough not to croumble.

Make sure you grease your pot mold well. Also another way to make them is by dipping or coating muslin, cheese cloth, or burlap in the hypertufa and then draping it over the outside of the pot. The fabric helps give it internal structural stability and insures you cover the entire thing since you can see it all on the outside of your pot mold! These look really cool and dramatic

I binged watched my little homestead when I first found you guys and I think I’ve seen most of them however if & when an episode pops up that I haven’t seen I watch it. I so look forward to every Friday to see what my favorite family on KZfaq is up to.

Find yourself a couple tall vases to put in the boots to put flowers in! My neighbour made the hypertufa pots but she used the outside of a pot, packed the mix on the outside then wrapped the pot in plastic to cure it. She even took rhubarb leaves, she layed them on a shallow bowl to keep the shape of the leaf then she put the mixture on the back of them.
