Boy’s Life is my favorite novel. I’ve read it every year since it came out. When I recommend it to anyone, I tell them to read the poem, and if that doesn’t touch you, this might not be the book for you.

I agree with you 100% Boy's Life is a masterpiece. I lent my original copy out to so many people it disintegrated...and that's a good thing. Love Swan Song as well.

Was hesitant to read it for a long time… ordered it, and it sat on my shelf for a long time… when I finally decided to tackle it, I was completely blown away!… it took me start starts and fits to get going but boy, once it did, it didn’t take any prisoners… it was beautiful, stunning, and exhausting, all rolled into one.. I had to take several breaks during the read just to get my bearings.. a stunning achievement… it was like the author was channeling something ethereal… I can’t stop thinking about it… Catcher in the Rye…A Separate Peace… and A Boy’s Life… again stunning achievement.. thank you Mr McAmmon…

This is such a great review. I have loved Stephen King for going on 40 years. McCammon had always been on my radar but I somehow never got around to reading him. I picked this up with no preconception of what I was getting and it was probably the finest book I have ever read. As an animal lover, I am sure you can imagine I found great swaths of this... challenging, and I spent a lot of it crying my eyes put with my dog in my lap- but there was nothing in there I didn't find to be serving a specific narrative purpose. Even though this tore my heart out repeatedly and ran it through a blender, I truly believe it did it for the greater good. I love It, but this is by far a superior novel (in my mind, at least). King is wonderful at showing you a slice of life that helps you understand his characters very well, but there is an emotional honesty to McCammon's writing that I feel better helps me understand myself. Can't wait to read the rest of his books.

A masterpiece. I've read this almost as many times as I've read Different Seasons. This came out at the height of the Stephen King craze of the 80's and early 90's so I overlooked it at first. BUT the cream always rises to the top.

Yes I read this excellent book about 20 years ago and still feel the impact that it has on me. And it's just so real and you realize that it's almost finished and you don't want it to end. ,"Swan Song" is also one of my favorites.

Anyone with that awesome T-shirt should be listened to!! And admired! Yes, Boy’s Life was so good! I just finished it. It was as if the author had followed me (born in 1956) and took notes and worked scenes from my life into his book! I was born-raised in a small town in KY. The book even mentioned Bowling Green KY where I went to college! Just read it!

Brian Lee Durfee this book is of my top 3 books. How true your word are....very word in this book is PERFECT. I bought this in 91, have the hardback. I started it while my husband and I had a 2 hour trip, I kept turning the radio off reading him passages from the book. He finally said just Read it to me. I did we ohhh ahhh laughed and just had a Great Big Time. It was suppose to be a fishing weekend, no fish were harmed that weekend, I just read to my man. Side note. Robert did a anniversary edition of the book I can’t find it, but I remember reading where he was traveling the roads with his daughter and thought to himself, A Girls Life could be a follow up. Every person I given this book to loves it.

Thanks for this review. I just purchased this book and am about to start reading it. I'm also planning on reading Lonesome Dove afterwards. What you said about it really has me sold. Very much looking forward to that one. Regarding Stephen King's IT (which you had mentioned) I really liked that one, despite all it's flaws (it was very formulaic, the pacing was up and down, that one very questionable scene brought the book down a few notches for me, etc). Still, as a whole, IT is a seriously great book. Its strengths _far_ outweighing its weaknesses. The connections I had to "The Losers Club" were incredibly strong. Especially Ben. Kings small scale worldbuilding with the town of Derry was also incredible. I drew a map of it, as I read the book, which was a lot of fun. A couple, minor, things didn't add up (as described in the book) but that's not a big deal to me.

Great review... much like, you I needed someone to scratch that SK itch...McCammon and Dan Simmons are my two itch scratchers. Dan Simmons Summer Of Night is one of my favorite “coming of age” books... quite comparable to IT.

I love Stephen King and I agree with you, Robert McCammon is totally on his level. I like Boy’s Life and Swan Song as well, but I absolutely love Speaks the Nightbird, and Queen of Bedlam. The Matthew Corbett series start fading off in quality by the fourth or fifth book, but the first 2 to 3 are perfect! I’d also like to say that since you shared your favorite novel, I’d like to share my favorite novel of all time. It’s the 3rd book in the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin, A Storm of Swords. For me, it’s just the perfect novel! Cheers, and thanks for the review of one of my all time favorites!

I prefer McCammon to King! Some of King’s book lose me before I’m halfway through! Not with McCammon every novel I start I finish! My Favorite McCammon books are: The Wolf’s Hour, Swan Song, They Thirst, and of course Boy’s Life!
