As a 21 year old I'm very disappointed in myself that I didn't join boyscouts when I was younger

An emergency blanket can also be used to prevent snow blindness! If you are in an emergency snowy situation, and the sun is shining so brightly(sun shining off snow) you cant see, you can poke two tiny holes in it to see through and put it over your head, they are slightly see through so it dims the light down tremendously

I think the reason they don't have bug repellent in the 10 essentials is to encourage scouts to be able to learn about natural bug repellent plants like lemongrass, mint, etc. And of course the 10 essentials is a starting point not a comprehensive list.

So, is this hike a 10 mile one way or round trip? Either way your gear is wholly in adequate. A slim jim is not enough for that long a hike...a full lunch is a minimum consideration. On a positive note , I like the pack...where can I find one?

I didn't mean a slim Jim is a full meal, just a way to represent spare food. You bring a lunch and spare snacks. For the backpack, I bought it used at a flea market.

Do you pay for all of that or do they give it to you

You have to pay for all of it. It comes out to 1 or 2 hundred buck for most essential things and some

@@Jessepanda10But of course unless you are immediately going camping (which a scout may be) you can buy a little at a time or sometimes our troop folks will either loan their older gear or offer as a hand me down to help the scouts get started. My son and his sister have some older gear given to us when we got started and we loan it out or give away when they outgrow like a youth sleeping bag. Our scoutmaster gave my son an old external frame pack, which we cleaned and added some new buckles - it was old but works and would have been a big ticket item for us so it was a huge help. When my son out grows it someone else will get this.
