Boy Scouts of America: Girls now admitted

While participation in the Boy Scouts of America has steadily declined over the past four decades, and courted controversy by excluding, and then allowing, gay scouts and troop leaders, scouting still has power, and perhaps more relevance than ever. To accommodate changes in the American family, the look of scouting has changed as well, with girls being admitted into Cub Scout dens for the first time. Tony Dokoupil finds out what the boys think about that, and also visits a Boy Scout Troop out of Salt Lake City, many of whose members are refugees from Southeast Asia.

I don't think that girls shouldn't be allowed in actual scouts, i think that girl scouts should also let boys in and just call it like guides or something. They birth dip completely different things and girl scouts do the wimpiest activities. But thats just my opinion. Mabye some boys would want to do those activities, we should let them.

I am in Boy Scouts in Alabama. Part of the fun of it is hanging out with the boys and tooling on each other. With the addition of girls takes some of that fun away with stricter restrictions and a lot less leniency on the jokes you can make or all around fun you can have. I understand the importance of inclusion but there’s got be a better way. GIRL scouts is for GIRLS and BOY scouts are for BOYS.

@@claudymusic1558 no generally they interrupt the fun by getting offended or being upset they get treated harshly (like boys) If guys wanna joke around about dead animals and the like, they shouldn't habe to walk on egg shells because there's girls who want to be a boyscout but then won't be able to handle what happens in boyscouts. Men, boys and girls, women are different, they have different hormone balances and their brain generally operates differently, and differemt anatomy there's only a few thousands of a percent that's thr exception. I know twitter and media wants to force the idea that they're the same. But biology and reality disagree there. They're gonna admit girls into boy scouts, then boys are gonna leave cuz they can't be themselves anymore, boyscouts is gonna collapse and then there's no scouting at all anymore. Imagine men comming into a nail salon and try to turn it into a man cave or garage. No more gossip allowed, no more sassy talk, no more down talking of your bf or husband allowed. It would ruin the salon. Women would be upset and rightfully so. Same as men rn.

The worst part was looking at the arrows that they were shooting. When I was in "Boy Scouts" we shot real arrows that could have easily impaled us and it was awesome.

Eagle Scout here. It didn't upset me too much when they let Gay scoutmasters in. But I wonder how they will handle the Order of the Arrow Eagle requirement where the Scout has to go and sleep alone at night in the woods?

1) Maybe this requirement is a bad idea for kids of ANY gender and should be done away with. 2) There is absolutely no reason why a female scout couldn't do this. If "manhood" is defined by sleeping alone in the woods that is pretty LAME. Maybe "manhood" should actually be defined by respecting and including others no matter what their gender. And not being so insecure with how "manly" you are that you have to put down other people.

1:15 These 10 seconds alone lol, point proven. I was once an 8 year old boy, and 8 year old boys don't want to hang out with girls. 8 year old boys want to goof around with other boys. It's sad that my son might not one day be able to have the same experience me and my father had in scouts. While I do think that the skills in scouts are just as valuable to a girl as a boy, why not incorporate them into, idk, the GIRL scouts?

As a 13 year old boy, this is just ridiculous. Yes, some of these girls want to join boy scouts. However, I'm 99.99% sure that this all started because of what there parents have taught them. You know what, dammit, Imma make it to where boys can join girl scouts (not really. That statement was full of sarcasm). As Ben Shapiro said, it says in the name of the club that you must be a boy. Can't believe I originally wanted to be a liberal when I grew up. Glad I changed my way. If you have read this far, thanks for reading my ranting.

In the UK Scouts are all about the kids, and giving them the best skills for the future. They come to learn something as well as just having fun on some camping trips. That is for both girls and boys.

@@alexlundquist5737 Girls have the girl scouts. There is nothing stopping the girl scouts doing the same things that the boy scouts do. These changes are insidious. It's happened here in the UK too. Girls have been admitted to the Boy scouts, but the girls still have the Guides which is still female specific and don't admit boys, because apparently "girls need their own space". Why is it important for girls to have their own space away from boys, but it's not important for boys? If you want to make a co-ed group then create a new one, or abolish the two existing groups and combine them into one, but don't subvert the boys group, and keep the girls group as it is.

Here is reality young man. The Democrats don't want boys to be boys. They don't want you to grow up being a man and macho. They call it "Toxic Masculinity". They want you neutered and they want you to get use to girls running the show. Tell you what. Forget the scouts. Tell your folks and parents of friends that are boys to take you camping and do do things boys do without girls around. And learn this early..............girls will ruin your life. Say that over and over and over............girls will ruin your life because they will. You will understand when you get older.

I remember going on a camp out and there was a girl troop and several of them were complaining about how dirty the camp was and I could tell it wasn’t them joking but they were actually annoyed at it

In one of my last activities before I left Scouting, I led a recruiting activity aimed at both boys and girls. The activity took place outdoors around plank tables, and I made a point of wiping them off with a wet cloth. I never had a boy who didn't accept that. However, a number of girls attended this outdoor activity in their spring outfits, and were plainly unhappy at sitting their finery down on seats they regarded as rough and not clean enough for their tastes as girls. And that, of course, is FINE. But it illustrates one of many ways that girls and boys are different, and those differences should be respected. And, I don't doubt, the interests of girls WILL be respected in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. But not the interests of boys, which will be discarded.

Here’s the problem. I am a young boy. And from my experience, young boys can’t be young boys around girls. It just doesn’t work. When girls are around boys are either trying to be cool or are just awkward, and that totally ruins the adventure experience. There can’t be a brotherhood with girls in it.

There were talks a few years ago. some local girls scout and boy scout councils actually share the same office in preparation for the merger. But national GSUSA wants nothing to do with a BSA and killed all merger talks

With the world right now I would never join simply due to the fact that when you go against the opinions of everyone else you get bashed in the head with it. I now have another reason to add to why I enjoy the girl scouts than I do the boys. Cookies, stronger and more dependable roles in cartoons, and apparently they're the ones with balls to understand that it's not sexist to have something made only for one gender.

This is my personal opinion, but most girls in the north have stopped GS because their leaders haven't done anything with their kids. The girl scout program itself is kinda similar, but it has been done incorrectly by most leaders. My great grandmother who was a girl scout leader, did a great job with her girl scouts. Now everything has changed, and some girl troops have stopped doing skills, and have done more crafts and things like that, which I think is kind of stupid, because girl scouts were supposed to help young women to provide leadership in their community, like the boy scouts have been doing for so long. So I guess most girls just want to do more survival skills and help their community out more.

My older brother was in boy scouts, and our dad was a troop leader. I always wanted to to be in the scouts because I was a rough and tumble girl, and the image that the girl scouts gave off at that time was not about adventure, the outdoors, or the things I was really interested in. Also, most of my friends were boys, because they were the ones that accepted me at school. I tried to join girl scouts and showed up at an interest meeting, but the girl scouts didn't think our school showed enough interest for a troop to be formed. So, I didn't become a scout at all. Even as an adult I feel sad that I didn't get to be a part of something like that. Instead, I would read my brother's boy scout books and pretend to be a scout. Because my dad was a troop leader, I got to go on a camping trip once. Still, I wish I could have had an opportunity to experience the scouts like other kids did. I feel like that lack of adventure and community in my childhood is a void that I am still trying to fill today. Boys need a space to be boys, and girls need a space to be girls - but boys and girls also need to learn to work together in these kinds of cooperative and competitive environments. I don't see a problem with the boy scouts including both as long as they offer troops with only boys and girls as well as co-ed.

When you have kids, and they show interest you can be a parent helper and maybe train to be a leader. In the UK you can train up at any age I don't know in America if you have to grow up with it

I hope you joined the Marines to make up for your loss of not being a boy scout in your early years. If not, you should really think about it. It will be your experience of being a boy scout on steroids. If this isn't for you now, it wasn't for you back then. They should come up with a co ed group and call it something else not ruin the name and idea of Boy Scouts. This is how the liberals get rid of "toxic masculinity" early in age. That is the real agenda behind ruining scouting.

I go to a camp called Camp NoBeBoSco. When I am there all, I wish is to spend 1 week in the woods with 130 boys. The closest thing I have towards this is staying up till 10:30 and saluting to the big speaker with 2/3 of the camp. Thankfully no girls know about it or else the Bob Johnson Fan Club will be disbanded.

In most countries around the world Scouting contains both boys and girls and operate successfully. I see a big benefit for keeping it just boys but I also know the Girl Scouts in our area don't offer the camping adventures that the kids want. There are only so many makeovers the girls want to do. Bottom line is we are loosing a whole generation to the damages done by electronics and the more kids we can save using programs like Boy Scouts the better off we are.

I'm scout of Brazil, here we don't are separated in boys and girls. In the past, we were separated in boys and "bandeirantes", who are the girls, nowadays, we are one, boys and girls together. I believe that this way is better than before, because we learn to deal with boys and girls, with each one's way. One of the many proposals that scout behind is beign better adults, we have to learn live with men and women because we live with the both of them and not the only one.

The Girl Scouts no longer do the awesome outdoor skill development and training which the Boy Scout Organization has continued in their programming. I understand why girls want to join the Boy Scouts. I attempted countless times over a 10 year period of time to connect my daughter in a Girl Scout troop and there was no response for her to join one from the local G.S. Council, therefore, I do not want to listen to the GS organization ever complain about girls not joining them! Even the high school she attended had a troop, yet no one ever returned my calls. I think girls are intelligent to become members of the Boy Scouts.

Comment by Girl Scouts that they were "just told of the decision" is a bald faced lie. The BSA has been trying to negotiate with the GSUSA for a decade before giving up and going solo after the GSUSA said "go pound sand." And from our experience, the GSUSA actively discourage outdoor activities and camping -- and we live in Coloado!

I am a boy scout and I do not approve of the girls joining boy scouts. They have their own separate organization for a reason. It is their choice not to go on campouts.
