Demonstration of Boyle's law experiment with data collection to investigate the relationship between gas pressure and volume at constant temperature for a fixed mass of gas. Boyle's law is one of the key foundations of the ideal gas law and so this experiment is relevant for GCSE science, A-Level physics and A-Level chemistry. The data collected in this video is used to investigate whether gas pressure and volume are directly proportional or inversely proportional in a second video ( • Boyle's Law Experiment... ).
You can download the worksheet to try the analysis yourself - great for learning independently at home: physicshq.wixsite.com/alevelp...
Experiments with gases, like this one, are mandatory practicals for many physics specifications. So this is good practice for OCR physics A, AQA A-Level physics, Edexcel A-Level physics, CPAC, PAG, practical endorsement.
Want to see a video close up of the pressure and volume scales so you can collect the data yourself? Then check out this video: • Do it yourself: Boyle'...
Relevant concepts: Boyle's law, gas laws, ideal gas law, gas pressure, gas volume, direct proportionality, inverse proportionality, and testing for proportionality.

what are the laboratory apparatus that you've used in this video?
@PhysicsHQ
@PhysicsHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. At 0:33 I point out the apparatus. Essentially the equipment has a sealed column of air connected to a pressure gauge and an input allowing for increasing the pressure above atmospheric pressure. The main aspect of the apparatus is the pressure gauge and volume scale which is what I point out as "the apparatus". Usually the device I was using is called "Boyle's Law Apparatus".

Sir to write a lab report , what would the aim , precaution and conclusion be?
@PhysicsHQ
@PhysicsHQ 3 жыл бұрын
The aim: discover relationship between gas pressure and volume. Conclusion: there are two conclusions to draw - either that gas pressure is directly proportional to volume / or not and that gas pressure is inversely proportional to volume / or not.

Why is p/v directly but pv is indirectly prportional isnt it the other way around
@PhysicsHQ
@PhysicsHQ 2 жыл бұрын
If p ∝ V ⇒ p = kV Therefore k = p/V. If all ratios in table are constant we have a directly proportional relationship. If p ∝ 1/V ⇒ p = k/V Therefore k = pV. If all products in table are constant we have an inversely proportional relationship.

What would be the independent variable and what would be the depend variable
@PhysicsHQ
@PhysicsHQ Жыл бұрын
In this experiment the analysis isn’t laid out as a typical independent/dependent data set. But volume is independent and pressure is dependent. Since I change the volume of the gas and the pressure gauge indicates it’s subsequent pressure.

What is the relationship between pressure and volume in terms of the kinetic theory of gases?
@racing8028
@racing8028 Жыл бұрын
Pressure is inversely proportional to volume, when the volume is decreased there are more collisions with the walls of the container which causes the particles to have a change in momentum, and we know that a change in momentum is equal to the force exerted on the container (pressure) that is why we have the formula force=Mv-Mu/T
