"Pictures Of You" is a great one from the band.

For me their album Disintegration is a masterpiece. Although very dark.

It took a while, but this band grew on me in the 80's. "Just Like Heaven", "Love Song", and "Friday I'm In Love", to me, are their strongest hit songs.

This was their first hit, and it was a bit rough sounding. I really hope you keep going with the Cure into the 80s. They really expanded sonically. If you want something sort of dark and ambient, almost prog sounding with great guitar work, try A Forest. They get way more mature, and could craft a perfect pop song like nobody's business. Maybe get to the other song that lost a different poll, Lovesong. You'll get used to Robert Smith's voice. Thanks guys!

The Cure IS a genre all of in itself, as their music spans punk, rock, psychedelia, pop, shoegaze, ballads, and flat out rocker - and they are the poster children for GOTH music (wouldn't exist without em) - goth is essentially 'from darkness, light". I have a special mushy spot in my heart for this band, and it's not a very 'macho' band, but I don't care! The Cure isn't an easy band to appreciate - especially if you weren't around for the vibe in the late 70's early 80's. But, take your time, and be prepared for a long exploration, for The Cure has a ton of music and it exists in a lot of mood ranges - some moods can be uncomfortable too - which is rare in music when you think about it. Even though I love the band, there are a few songs I absolutely can't stand (like Lovecats - - noooooo!). I'd say Alex giving it a B- is exactly the score for a first timer to give. I couldn't even begin to tell you what song to listen too next, but starting out from the beginning (the live stuff on the expanded albums of their early days) is incredibly interesting to see how it evolved.....

"Just Like Heaven", and "In Between Days" are two cool The Cure songs. "Friday I'm Love" might be their biggest hit. I always like the lesser hit "Letter to Elise" from that record.

It’s interesting, everyone has different tastes, but I really like the sound of Robert Smith’s voice. Check out “Just like Heaven”, which I think is the Cure’sbest song.

The song is an absolute classic. It really ushered in 80s new wave, which is a personal fave. Their catalog is so rich and varied compared to other artists in the genre. They're really great.

Robert Smith's voice is an acquired taste. Other Cure songs I recommend are In Between Days, Close to Me, Just Like Heaven Lovesong & Lullaby. I don't recommend Friday I'm in Love.

The Cure are an all-time great band. So influential to modern music.

I totally respect Alex's admission that not understanding the genre very well may be why he rated it B-. The line between Punk and New Wave can be very blurred especially from around 1979 to 1981. Not understanding a genre and its sound definitely affects your ability to appreciate it. I especially respect the openness to hearing more of a genre to get some understanding of it, even if it's outside your taste profile.

In the same vein, PLEASE react to Echo and the Bunnymen, “the Killing Moon”. It’s orchestral and romantic. My absolute favorite band from that era - had multiple albums on vinyl from the 80s. I wouldn’t steer you wrong.

Hey A&A. The Cure range from dark goth to high atmospheric, music wise. I'm a fan of theirs, and I was real curious how you guys would react because they're not for everyone. Glad you liked what you heard. As a sampling I'd recommend "Just Like Heaven", next. Also "In Between Days", "Love Song", "Pictures of You", and "Burn" (from 'The Crow' soundtrack). "Burn" gets overlooked but it's a great song as it blends all of The Cure's styles into one song. Thx, guys!

Their song Just Like Heaven is probably their most radio played song and their biggest pop hit. Inbetween Days is another of their popular songs. Pictures of You and A Forest is two of their deeper “hits”. The lyrics in those songs are more profound and “personal” I guess,

The Cure became masters of layering music one instrument at a time. Robert Smith's voice really changed over time as well. A Forest is a great ambient mood. Fascination Street is a masterpiece. NOT punk. This was from the formative days of post-punk (darker, angular, atmospheric)and new wave (cool, hooky, pop with an edge), when the labels were fairly interchangeable. But this is VERY early Cure; the song to listen to from their debut album to get a real taste of where they were going is "Three Imaginary Boys". After that, they and Joy Division basically invented goth rock (without being goth rockers themselves) and paved the way for many of the great post-punk bands that followed (U2, Echo & The Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, etc.). With each album their stripped-down production grew lusher and the song-writing more intricate, but their sound, style and lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith's iconic voice made them instantly recognizable. More than 40 years later, including an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they're still going strong. Key tracks to check out: "A Forest", "Play For Today", "Primary", "Charlotte Sometimes", "In Between Days", "Shake Dog Shake", "Just Like Heaven", "Pictures of You", "Fascination Street", “Killing An Arab”, “Lullaby”, “The Holy Hour”, "In Your House".

"Shake Dog Shake", "Lullaby" or "The Hanging Garden". Their "goth" side is amazing. Dark, sinister and not a little disturbing. Check out Siouxsie And The Banshees and Bauhaus. More goth fun.

The first song I ever heard by the Cure was “lets go to bed” . It’s a more representative of the unique Cure sound and a much better intro to the band, in my opinion. You should give it a listen.

The Cure is one of those bands whose "hits" sound very commercial while the majority of their songs are more experimental and amazing. Knowing what you two tend to enjoy, I would suggest Plainsong, A Strange Day, Open, Charlotte Sometimes, or my personal favorite, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea. The earlier their songs, the more punk influence, the later, the move new wave until 1989's Disintegration album, when The Cure hit their stride and their trademark sound arrived.

“Close to Me” was on heavy rotation on 120 Minutes on MTV back in the day. Good stuff.

Your taste sits fairly firmly in the mainstream it seems to me. I find The Cure infinitely more interesting than bands like Boston or ELO for instance. Each to their own as you say.

The Cure was a formative band growing up in the eighties. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me was the first cassette tape I ever bought. And I daresay their following album Disintegration is a masterpiece 💜💜💜

You guys have to add Siouxie and the Banshees to the list of New Wave acts to check out, songs like "Spellbound", "Cities in Dust", "Israel", and "Dear Prudence" are pretty much "must hear" songs.

Hey guys, This is the old man from Montana who used to live in Riverview, FL. You guys have to check out - “Lovesong” from their “Disintegration” album. I was a Marine stationed in Quantico, VA when this came out, and it was one of those songs I listened to when I was in one of those melancholy brooding moods. We all get there from time to time. I can look back at it now and laugh, all over a girl. It’s a great song that represents the band well, so give it a listen if you can!

This is very early and raw, their sound develops and evolves tremendously quickly. The Cure also have distinct phases they go through. Pretty sure you guys will really come to love this once you've heard a few.

Their songs range from “floating above the earth” bliss (“Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love”) to morose “wallowing in the mires” (“Fascination Street” and “Lullaby”). All of it is amazing. The bass on “Fascination Street” absolutely slaps, but “Just Like Heaven” would be my recommendation for your next reaction. It’s intricate, evocative, and is the perfect marriage of synth and guitar.

To quote Obi-Wan, “you’ve taken your first step to a larger world.” Or close. Try “Just Like Heaven,” or just about anything off the album Disintegration. Some masterful, mature Cure there. Totally worth the deeper dive.

"His voice sounds a little whiny to me." 😂🤣 I probably felt that way after my first listen. The Cure is proto emo, so many bands mimicked this in subsequent years.

I hope that you keep going with the Cure. I would love seeing you do the full album of Disintegration on Patreon. Totally different vibe where the music takes a front seat and the sparse lyrics on most of the songs are pure poetry.

Great reaction guys! The Cure have quite a unique & varied sound. This was more from their punk era. Highly suggest some tracks from their gothic new wave period (mid to late 80's): Fascination Street (banger), Lullaby, Love Song, Just Like Heaven, Push, Just Like Heaven. Awesome band. LOTS to check out.

I would call this early Cure song new wave, but they became more gothic soon after this. They kept it up all the way through the '80s, and my favorite song of theirs is "Friday I'm in Love", which is from 1992.

The Cure were an interesting band, at least for a while. Their song, “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” is a classic.

I know Alex will probably get hate for the low grade, but it took me a while to get use to Robert Smith's voice, too. Smith's voice is now what's unique and what I look forward when listening to The Cure's music. 😸❤😽❤

I think Alex just isn't into the sound of this era of music, but I would bet if he listened to more he would come to love it. Like any music, jazz, classical, etc. one's appreciation grows the deeper you dive in.

PICTURES OF YOU ... that's my go to Cure song. I'm not really a Cure fan, but this one hits home with me regarding suicide.

I've always been interested in how you two would react to the different kind of vocals of the punk, post punk era. "Marquee Moon" by Television and "Blank Generation" from Richard Hell and the Voidoids are from the same era.

The Cure has a weird record called "Disintegration" that was really dark and not at all pop like this song and their other hits. I like Disintegration, but I'm not sure how non-fans would feel about it.

"In Between Days" and the REMIX of I"n a Forest" from their REMIX album are more representative of their style. That said this is GOTH music the whining depressed lead singer is characteristic of the music and meant to show "angst" and depression. The lyrics and musicality of The Cure is what landed them in the Rock and Rolll Hall of Fame

Back in the day, I had their MixedUp CD in the car. Played the shit out of it. Great band.

Their music, became more intricate with each record....absolute LEGENDS

A&A, their "Friday I'm In Love", "The Love Cats" and "Lets Go To Bed" are better songs from them.

"Just Like Heaven" (probably my favorite), Lovesong and Friday I'm In Love are their bigger hits and have higher production value. You may or may not appreciate his voice more on those tracks too because of that. Other staples from them are A Forest (from their early goth days) and Pictures of You. Btw, I've heard Robert Smith sing recently and his voice sounds the same as it did back in the 80s. So say what you want about his tone, but its really rare for vocalists to be able to maintain a consistent vocal tone like that over many decades. So hats off to Smith for that.

I never got into The Cure but 'In Between Days' is one of my favorite songs from the '80s. And 'The Lovecats' is kinda fun.

I used to work in a retirement home as a CNA up until 2020. ANYWAY I was a care provider for this 94 year old woman. I was doing her morning care and out of nowhere she said “Do you like the band The Cure?” I was like wait what? She then said “yeah have you heard of the band The Cure, I loved them and went to a lot of their concerts.” Mind you she was 94 so I was still in a bit of shock. So we started talking about them and other older punk bands and rock bands. She was a cool lady, may she RIP. ☺️❤️

The band and singer Robert Smith definitely both evolved.as this was just their second single. In fact, they remixed and re-recorded the vocals for a re-release in 1986 of BOYS DON’T CRY.

Yes, I've been waiting for you to cover the Cure! They are very good at bouncing from more pop rock new wave type songs to to some pretty dark kind of emo/goth pop rock stuff. In my opinion, they don't have a bad album and they have countless amazing songs for you to check out. You should check out some of their music videos, very cool.

This is the first song they made, the sound here are so seminal and a litte basic, but in the 70’s nobody have heard things like this. After that the sound of the band and the great Smiths compositions make the Cure one of the best pop bands ever. Keep going , it really worth it

This band basically created an entire genre of music from scratch and it's worth pursuing more just to understand the extent of their influence and what got them into the rock and roll hall of fame, even if it's not entirely your jam. Check out Close To Me for a great example of how their sound developed and incorporated more jazzy elements.

Admittedly I've never been a big fan of The Cure but I do like "Friday I'm In Love". This was commonly heard on the radio back in the '80s and is still played today. Maybe their most well-known song. If you are looking for another Cure song to react to this may be the one.

Great reaction fellas, I was a little worried when this popped into the feed today as to how you would react. I love The Cure and this may not be the best place to start with them, so I was worried, that mainly because of his voice, you may not want to check more out. His voice is not what you expect, but it works for the music, much like Geddy Lee. I think you will be surprised at how they have progressed musically over the years, both in their playing and song writing. Think you will love their stuff off "Disintegration". Here's the thing about the Cure. No two albums sound the same, no two songs sound the same. Then there are Cure albums like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and The Head on the Door, where, unless you are really familiar with them, you wouldn't even realize any two songs are from the same album. Their catalog is massively diverse. Definitely check out Just Like Heaven, A Forest, and In Between Days, but also...Why Can't I Be You?, The Blood, Push (A MUST!), Fascination Street, The Caterpillar, High, the list is endless.

Jesus, I love this song. I heard it as a kid in a little flick called “The Wedding Singer” back in 98’. The song was old back then. Now it’s a classic.

Masters of Atmosphere. They manage to play long vibe songs and keep you subtly interested to the end.

For 1979, this song was influential. It represented the beginning of "alternative" rock. I'm with you though. I'm not a huge fan of this song. Better songs from The Cure are "Fascination Street" and "Just LIke Heaven."

Hi from Chile! (just eliminated from the soccer world cup so I'm very sad).... :-( just enough for a The Cure song!! This was their first popular song in Latinamerica and was so different (in the middle of Disco music, just imagine that) that it was a slapp in the face like Nirvana was in the 90's. This was the beginning of the end of Disco and the invasion of New wave bands. I really loved them. I remember talking with my 14 years old school friends at that time, saying that band is ok, that other are great or very good...but what about The Cure?...Oh, they are geniuses!!! They all answered yes! yeah! yes exactly! Geniuses! I can hear Boys Don't Cry the entire day guys. My favorites are In Between Days and Close to Me. Regards from Chile!! :-)

Funny reliving the late 70’s and 80’s, when many traditional rock fans didn’t get the new sounds and so, stopped evolving. Couch, bong, Pink Floyd, serious 7 minute jams just couldn’t enjoy dance floor, alcohol, primitive fun for 3 minutes. I loved both, and still do.

Very nice to see again the alienation that my generation felt with this sound. It took a while until we were picked up. And many stayed behind and never made the jump. I'm sure you will get there.

Great to see you checking out The Cure. "Just Like Heaven" is another great song from them. The vocals aren't as 'whiny,' I understand what you mean there, so you might enjoy it more. And this falls more into the New Wave category than punk. If you want to hear something with a very different feel from them then try "A Forest." Echo and the Bunnymen are another band from the time you should take a listen to.

"Friday I'm Love" is a song you must have heard before. If not then it should be their next song. Video for it shows the band playing. These are visual mtv bands.

You guys have given me a greater appreciation for songs I have heard hundreds of times growing from groups like Steely Dan, America, Foreigner, etc. I think now is the time to focus more on new wave.Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunneymen, INXS, OMD, Depeche Mode, New Order, Spandau Ballet and The The to name a few. There are hundreds of others. New Wave is where it’s at and you’ll find out if you do that Word.

A Forest and Fascination Street are two Cure songs known for the haunting bass line. Just Like Heaven is another amazing gem. Robert Smith's melancholy and droning voice is a signature aspect to his music, which is a common element to the early 80s, post punk/wave music heard in British artists of that time.

Amazing but true: On May 16 1995 (at the L.A. Forum), during their world tour for their No Quarter album, I witnessed Jimmy Page and Robert Plant play a Cure song! It was "Lullaby" from the Disinetegration album. Turns out the Cure's lead guitarist at the time, Porl Thompson, was on loan as part of the band. Still, Led Zeppelin played a Cure song and it was awesome!

A Forest, Fascination Street, Lullaby, Jumping Someone Else's Train are a few that worth a listen.

This was their first hit and they were very young and it was a hit largely because it WAS so simple and unpolished and unsophisticated. They had a punk garage band sound at first and it worked for 1979. But the songs got much more polished and sophisticated over time. In Between Days is a personal fav.
