Күн бұрын

In this video Paul Andersen explains the nature of science. He describes how science is a way of knowing about the natural world. Scientists develop investigations to gather evidence and make explanations about how the natural world works. These explanations are constantly critiqued over time. Most importantly science is a human endeavor.

Thank you so much for making these videos. I studied many of them for six hours a day for two days and passed my GED science exam. I used a different users videos before and failed. You make it easy to understand. You should get an award or something for helping so many people. I cried when I passed it from happiness so again thank you so much.♡

I appreciate you making the distinction that science is "a" way of knowing, not "the" way of knowing. Many in the scientific community, don't understand this distinction well. Kudos on your bravery for making this statement.

THis is the official position in Science of Philosophy and in Science in general. Its A way of knowing because they are other empirical ways of knowing things ex. everyday knowledge (experience) or Systematic methods for commercial/practical use. The problem with this statement is that non empirical ways use this "opening" to sneak in their claims and that is confusing for those who don't understand what qualifies as knowledge.
@jackyjack9660
@jackyjack9660 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickolasgaspar9660 those everyday knowledge is explained by science... Science for now is the way of knowing things... Everything we look for is based on science... Be it economics or everyday knowledge... Everyday knowledge is explained by science... But we still don't know that it's the only way of knowing things... It's just a possibility that their are others ways too... Like spiritual people talk about their way but it's still a pseudo science... If theirs a way it should be evidence based which is what science is... So saying science is a way of knowing things suggest you already know other ways to explore the universe...

A Scientist is supposed to try to prove his postulate wrong. If he cannot then others also attempt to in peer review. Error bars of less than 85% are considered "true" repeatable science if idea cannot be proven wrong then become an accepted theory. שלום

science and religion correlate! :) Religion & science are best friends but due to people's differences in thoughts, sometimes people think religion is not nice. God is real and He exist.
@nickolasgaspar9660
@nickolasgaspar9660 6 жыл бұрын
No Carry. Science and Religion do not correlate since their claims about the world are in direct conflict with each other. Religion can be "not nice" as you put it....specially when it tries to make knowledge claims about the world. "God is real and He exist." I know that this is what many of us are brought up to believe, but like with all existential claims, the connection between a deity and existence must be empirically verified before its is reasonable to accept it. This is the Null Hypothesis (default position) in logic and for any claim on what exists or not.

Gould and Boas were both left-wing ideologues more concerned about political correctness than they were about actual science. Go look up what Ralph L. Holloway, an expert on human evolution from Columbia, said about Dr. Gould. Unless you're an ideologue yourself not open to new information.

I think this video is one of the best ways to describe what science and scientific knowledge is, but there is a huge problem in it on 1:38 01:38 that we can't answer what lies outside 01:40 of the natural world the supernatural ... Well unfortunately that is a fallacy, a statement that poisons the well. In reality We don't have a clue if it is possible for anything to "lie" outside the natural, more over to be supernatural (mind properties existing independent of a biological medium). An other problematic point is the following. science and we also can't answer 01:48 questions related to ethics and values 01:49 now we can contribute evidence to those 01:52 questions but we don't know what the 01:54 right answer is in science it's a human 01:57 question . That is not completely true. We can and we do use science and philosophy in all scientific disciplines. ALL theories are our human philosophical take on what we observe(big bang, Quantum interpretations, Gravity etc). Things are not that different in social sciences or in ethics. Secular morality based on our advances in science is our best card in our efforts to "produce" an ethical code which is ....also moral.(not like the divine declarations our the past). Great example is" Abortion". We used to hold sentimental and religious opinions on why abortion is wrong. The accumulation of Scientific knowledge revealed us that not only its not an immoral act, but its a moral decision and act against the future child, its parents and our society! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sKl4krKW3LHDe30.html So The role of Systematic Knowledge(Science) is far more essential for our efforts to answer scientific or "human" (even useless "why") questions.

Slight clarification. Believe it is misleading to say that "we cannot answer the question, 'does god exist?'" Cause while that is true, you are identifying a relatively lesser truth overlooking the greater truth that science does not prove anything to be true in the first place. I believe the point you were making is that science is empirical and relies on measurable phenomena however the way that you phrased it will lead less nuanced viewers to believe that an absence of evidence is supportive of their mental model of faith which is false. At least from an operational and efficiency perspective things that are not verified by scientific observation remain "wrong". We also cannot answer the question, "Do we live in a simulated matrix orchestrated by sentient robots?" however if I spent my life appeasing the sentient robot gods I would be likely wasting my time.

Mirco-evolution appears valid. However, "Darwinian Theory of Evolution" (i.e. Macro-Evolution by means of Random Mutation and Natural Selection) has not been established as "fact". The limiting factor to "Darwinian Theory of Evolution" is "Random Mutation" (i.e. chance). "A statistical impossibility is a probability that is so low as to not be worthy of mentioning. Sometimes it is quoted as 10^ -50 although the cutoff is inherently arbitrary. Although not truly impossible the probability is low enough so as to not bear mention in a rational, reasonable argument." The probability of a functional 150 amino acid protein chain forming by chance is 10^ -164. It has been calculated that the probability of DNA forming by chance is 10^ -119,000.

I am not sure that Religion qualifies as a "way of knowing", or even philosophy in most of its aspects. If we define Knowledge as "claims that are in agreement with current facts about the world" than Religion and some Philosophical categories and world views have serious problems with this claim.

It is totally pathetic that your introduction includes religious apologetics. Religion is a way of knowing superstitions. period.
