SO familiar. The cab just like the Class 117s they used to run on the Reading-Tonbridge line after the phasing out of the 3R (206) thumper 'Tadpole' units. I can still hear the AWS and air brakes!

I mind them as a kid used to get on at Lochwinnoch up to Glasgow central . The Adrossan Harbour stopped at Lochwinnoch.

Once had a run in the cab between Craigendoran and Crianlarich Upper- Crianlarich Lower - Killin Junction - Killin Killin Junction -Dunblane via Callander. First I saw the Central Highlands I was eight years old. One driver was a big Highlander called Angus,the other a Glasgow man called Davy. Whitbread Brewers Outing. Old man reckoned the nipper would be out the way of the drinking by arrangement with the guard. Ex Navy like the old man,everyone was ex something in those days 1961. Fell in love with both routes. Crianlarich Dunblane and The Killin Branch closed 1965. Walked that section often over fifty years,would probably not have been shut in later years,despite engineering problems. Walked Glen Ogle with a Civil Engineer in the nineties,he reckoned the rockfall and supposed engineering problems were an excuse for closure.There have been no problems in the last sixty years other than the road on the other side of the glen collapsing due to flooding. The Railway Route survived virtually intact.

Interesting video about a poor dmu in a sorry state. Apologies if it was someone actually reading it because it sounded like an annoying monotone robot. The DMU needs a hell of a lot of work. It looks better than it actually is. There's no oil on any of the important equipment and should really be under cover.

@@philiprufus4427 sorry mate my husband was involved in doing repairs on DMUs and coaches and even wagon repairs for over 20 years, it's not that bad to get involved,

Any idea what restoration costs are? Having the unit back in working order would be a great challenge!
@MorayMachines2 ай бұрын
Not sure on cost, it'll depend on how bad it turns out to be and what can't be fixed by the volunteers.

If the "Dram Tram" coach doesn't have a brake compartment, wouldn't it make more sense to restore the DMBS first to give the train a brake compartment? I thought trains in passenger service made up of loco hauled stock or traditional DMUs weren't allowed to operate without a brake coach?
@trainman86trainstramsandmore2 ай бұрын
I thought they wanted to restore the whole unit rather than just the composite :(
@MorayMachines2 ай бұрын
I think it will get restored, but it will have to wait until time and resources allow.

why was it ever ok to just flush the toilet straight onto the line and running gear?
@thisisus.5042 ай бұрын
I remember, growing up as a kid in Brighton....70s 80s and looking down at empty tracks at Brighton station and realising what I was staring at. It was DISGUSTING and so glad that doesn't happen anymore. I remember a toilet sign saying "do not flush in stations". Ha! Who knew?!!! 💩💩
