Back in the early 80's, there was a TV show called SCTV that was very much like "Saturday Night Live". "The Great White North" was one of the ongoing skits that it featured and was created by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas who also acted in them as fictional brothers Bob and Doug McKenzie. They also produced a comedy album which this song is from. Here is one of their Christmas schemed skits... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mL57l6V7nK6vf4k.html

There were a lot of Canadians on that show, but SCTV stood for "Second City TV" which at the time meant Chicago as it was the 2nd largest city in the USA. So it was Chicago's SNL w/ some Canadian flavoring.

The tuque is what both McKenzie brothers are wearing on their heads. A tuque usually is topped by a fluffy little pom-pom, about three inches in diameter. If you have seen the Elton John version of "Pinball Wizard" by The Who, from the 1975 movie, Elton wears a tuque with a silver pom-pom that looks like a large pinball -- that's the Pinball Wizard's "crown". Up until the 1990s, Winters in Montreal were so severe that our mothers wrapped us up in layers of sweaters, a parka or even a snowsuit, thick woolen mittens, a scarf that Mom would wrap three times around our heads and necks, a thick woolen tuque and if you had a parka, its hood, with fur or faux-fur surround, went over the tuque. Imagine trying to walk to school, immobilized by your clothing like that. We'd have to climb over mounds of fresh snow that were at least three feet high, navigate icy sidewalks and wind-swept street crossings. Although we were cold, we sweated from our bundling and from the physical effort of walking as fast as possible, to get to school on time. Our noses inevitably began to run snot into the scarves around our faces. It was soooo gross because it always ran into our mouths; I still recall its saltiness. Ugh. And then the snot would freeze solid in your scarf and only melt again when you got into the school building. Being a little child in elementary school was, despite all of the above, a magical time during the Winter.

Back bacon is a cut that includes the pork loin from the pig's back. It's leaner than side bacon and in the US it's often called "Canadian bacon." The bacon most people in America are used to is side bacon, which comes from the pig's belly and has more fat than back bacon.

The funniest thing about the skit of Bob & Doug McKenzie on SCTV (Canadian sketch comedy show) is that it was born out of a Canadian law that a certain percentage of Canadian television include specifically Canadian content. As a gag, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas came up with the McKenzie brothers as uber-Canadian stereotypes just sitting around drinking beer, talking about hockey, talking with heavy accents and spewing regional slang. It was just a goof, but it sure worked... and eventually even spawned a theatrical movie! Check out Strange Brew if you want to see the weirdest version of Hamlet you ever saw!

Great memories, a toque is a knitted hat that you wear when it's really cold out, looks like a sock, or hose (French referance) thus hosehead or hoser. A 24, is 24 beer in a case. Bob and Doug were regulars on a Canadian comedy skit show called "Second City Television". Some really classic stuff, with names like John Candy, Eugene Levie, Kathryn Ohars. Martin Short, countless others.

Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of fictional Canadian brothers who hosted "Great White North", a sketch which was introduced on SCTV (Canada's SNL on CBC Television) in 1980. Bob is played by Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Space Balls, & Honey, I Shrunk the Kids) and Doug is played by Dave Thomas. Bob and Doug became a pop-culture phenomenon, which led to a top-selling and Grammy-nominated album, Great White North, (that had RUSH's Geddy Lee guest star on one song) and the 1983 movie Strange Brew.

Bob MacKenzie was Rick Moranis, who was in a LOT of hit movies in the 1980s...Ghostbusters 1 & 2, Little Shop Of Horrors, My Blue Heaven, the Honey, I Shrunk The Kids movies, Spaceballs, and a few others. He left Hollywood after his wife died to be a stay at home dad for his kids. He now does voice over work and such. Doug MacKenzie was Dave Thomas, who has been a character actor in movies and sitcoms since his days at SCTV where he and Rick created Bob & Doug. THey made one really funny film as the MacKenzie brothers called 'Strange Brew'...and on their comedy album is a song called "Take Off (To The Great White North)" which they got Geddy Lee of RUSH to sing the main chorus of...and it is hysterical. Others have talked about how the characters were a good natured stereotype of Canadians. I loved how you guys just looked lost...it was comedy gold!!! Everything going over your heads...almost. Bob McKenzie was played by Rick Moranis while Doug was played by Dave Thomas. You would recognize both of them from movies over the years. The whole Bob & Doug bit came about because SCTV (TV show) moved to CBC (Canadian Broadcasting) from a US station and needed two more minutes of material per episode. CBC specifically asked for Canadian focused content so Rick and Dave basically ad-libbed a bunch of 2 minute bits with every Canadian stereotype imaginable. And Bob & Doug McKenzie were born...and took off. So they released a comedy album called The Great White North and made a movie called Strange Brew. Oh, and if you watch Brother Bear (Disney movie) they're the moose. And a toque up here is usually called a beanie down there.

A Touqe was the slang in Canada for the knitted winter cap. The comedy team "Bob and Doug McKenzie were Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, with a show on Canadian TV that broke thru to America with their funny takes on Canadian stereotypes in the 80s. Like they drink beer a lot, always wear their touqe bcse it's cold and talk in that regional dialect and say "eah" a lot.

Lol. Awesome 80’s Canadian comedy. The one guy was the father in Honey I shrunk the Kids. Their skits were in the Canadian show SCTV. A toke is a hat on their heads.
