Awesome. And timely. I have an led tv that has a fault. It has a faint picture that shows up if you shine a flashlight on the display, which I think indicates either a bad led backlight or the board for it. I'd like to fix it if possible. I'm tired of throwing away simple devices because nobody thinks it worth fixing things anymore.

Thank you for the helpful guide. I am impressed that the heat produced from the heat gun does not destroy the LED component. I see from your comments you used the TXINLEI 8586 110V Solder Station. What temperature did you set the heat gun to?

I have done this a small hand full of times and use a hotplate for this purpose purchased on Amazon. It heats from the bottom and worked great each time. Just need to be careful as I burned a finger or two the first few times.

Hello from Germany, 🙂✌ Based on my experience, I heated them from below. Otherwise the plastic will melt and the LED won't survive for long. 👍

Been playing with game console repair lately. Newer stuff has that low melt solder. No wonder only half of them work when they can be taken apart with a hair dryer. Chips get hotter than that when a little dust gets in them

The manufacturer rarely uses it. Mostly repairs or mods in my experience. Smd stuff is easy to kill though haha. I'm in and out quick with a hot iron and leaded solder haha

You would know it Brad. I just bought a new soldering station without the rework gun! Oh well, I’ll just have to tell the wife I need the rework gun and buy another one when I need it. Or, maybe you could show us how to mod our old heat gun to work on these things? I’d watch!!!!

Added the 1K like for your video! I have repaired lots of stuff, including TV's, but repairing these LED strips, my first time. Luckily I already have Hot Air rework station, good commercial soldering iron, and skills. There's a video of a guy doing this with an Alcohol Lamp, heating the strip from the bottom to remove the LED's. If you haven't seen it, you might like watching it.

I think you are damaging the layer on the LED by heating it from above. I don't think it was soldered by heating from the top in the factory!

I have seen people super glue the lenses on those 3 dots that sorround the led after scraping off the old glue.

There is no need to crush/break the LEDs, as mechanical stress has more potential for substrate damage than heat. You may need a smaller exit tip to keep the heat concentrated, and perhaps less air speed.

In this case, I wasn't doing it with damage prevention in mind, only speed. It's very fast removing them by breaking them off and then coming back with the iron. You could be right in your assertion generally, but out of all the ones I replaced, no substrate or pad was damaged using this method.

@@TheGuitologist I say do what works for you, if we all went by the book or by other peoples rules this hobby would be boring AF, finding shortcuts that work is half the rush of doing all this, hell i just saw a couple of shortcuts i'm going to attempt just by watching this great video. And i say hobby because it is fun to me as much as profitable.👍

Very useful follow up video. I like the long one as well as it shows the whole journey, including the learning process. More KZfaqrs should follow that format (full video + condensed "summary"). Anyway, I was thinking SMD-solder-paste may be helpful here. I seem to remember it melts at a lower temperature so it would not strain the LEDs that much during soldering. (I fear the LEDs may break down early because they were strained/overheated during soldering) Thank you for the useful video ! /chrisV

I have a Sony bought in 2010 and it still works like its brand new. I opened it up and all the caps are Nichicon. The factory warranty was only 1 year

I did replace close to 5 of those led using older led for another tv, problem is they are dimmer once I turn the TV on, what surprised me when I saw that is that when I use my led tester they are the same brightness as the others but thought the tv power they produce less light even if the original one's one the same strip produce full brightness

Depends on the problem. Is the problem a broken or cracked screen? If so, not likely to find a replacement.

@@TheGuitologist My main TV is a Panasonic 50" Plasma I bought back in 2010.. I love it and is still working great!! Hopefully will never get a broken or cracked screen!! Just seen other people with Plasmas have Horizontal lines and or large dim areas appearing and making them un-watchable. Would be nice to know if there could be a fix other than to throw them away in a junkyard!!!

Thanks für that video - nice entertainment but nothing to recommend. Was funny to see how much can go wrong when you are using wrong tools and wrong temperatures when soldering LEDs. You are demonstrating that it makes more sense to buy new led stripes :-)

thanks for sharing your ideas - just a suggestion. Rather heat up the solder for the LED replacement from the bottom...then you dont have to burn the LED with the hot air. The removal can also be done by melting the solder from the bottom ;-)

I was gonna say that.. or use a clothes iron if u have too.. or hot plate.. but if ur gonna use hot air.. don't burn up the plastic

@@TerryDeSimone I noticed the other side of the strip is copper coated, so I was thinking maybe that makes it easier to heat from beneath. Might need to watch your fingers though and don't lean over too close or things could get a bit warm.

With all do respect but you fried the led when trying to solder it. The entire silicon is wasted and that led will not last long. You should heat from the bottom instead and no hit the led directly.

I've fixed two TVs, a Panasonic and an ALDI 'Bauhn'. Both had single led failures which stopped all other leds glowing [series circuits?]. I tracked down the failed led and removed both lens and led. Then I snipped a working led from a spare backlight strip, about 1 1/2 inch of strip either side. Then I 'jumper wired' this in place and stuck it down with double sided tape. Unfortunately in the Bauhn a further led burned out shortly after reassembly and I had to replace it also. I salvaged the backlight strips from a 'broken-screen' tv I found dumped nearby.

Sometimes with backlight failure the screen is still operating. If you shine a light onto the screen you can just make out the picture. If you see that picture then you'll feel more confident that it's just a backlight failure.

The lens is needed to spread the light sideways onto the white lining sheet

I've tried this method,however instead of a heat gun, i used a hot plate, it does save you money, but the amount of time its not worthy since some of the brand new strip sets are cheap enough, also, if you just replace the band LEDs on each strip, eventualy the other ones will go bad, its always better to replace all of them with brand new strips. Lastly, those LED lenses are a pain to glue back and some strips if they are just a bit crooked you'll end up with white spots on the screen.

If you're using hot air and you're worried about something melting. Just come from underneath

It's better to heat from underneath. You can preheat, then place the LED on top and heat it again. If the pads match well, the LED will automatically slide into place and flatten itself when the solder melts. And it won't blow it anywhere.

Yeah I wouldn't rip off the LED with the pliers like that because if the pads from the trace come off with it then you're going to have fun bridging everything and it won't sit flat , it works though but it is possible too rip the pads and if you use the heat gun from the bottom then you don't burn anything on the top and you don't worry about the LED going for a ride I'm sure this has been mentioned in some of your comments but I did not read any of them so my apologies if I sound like a broken record other than that cool video cheers

What causes Backlight to get spoiled .. I replaced a single Backlight, 2 months later the same backlight which was replaced is already burnt and spoiled... All other Backlight are working

You must NEVER use the welder on that way. It is not a painting operation. You have to warm the area with the welder and then, apply the tin, which will melt and cover the area. The way you do it you only will get the tin totally burnt. Good video anyway and do not worry, a lot of people use the welder in that way, but it is totally wrong.

Interesting that you recommend lead based solder. No wonder your having such good luck. I got enough lead solder to last the rest of my life. I hate fake solder without lead. I wonder if lead solder is even still available everywhere? They probably need to hire drug mules to smuggle it into California where's it's listed more dangerous than cocaine.

You can still get lead solder from China and here in the US. And at least one Canadian company I know of makes it. It's not banned yet.

It's much easier with a hot plate like mhp30. The air gun actually melts the LED.

Haven't been inside a TV since I had a Telefunken CRT. It used to blow the line transistors now and then. Got one finger burned by the HV once too. Nasty stuff! I don't like TV's.

I think there need a lot practice and good luck, tried three LEDs dead all fried from hot air gun, that basement not copper - some kind of China material where solder won't stick

Start by buying a proper soldering station like Weller ,jbc or if you are on a tight budget start with a universal 80w soldering iron (80w seems allot but your dealing with a cheap iron)proper tweezer and you need to calculate your led that your gonna replace otherwise after 2 months you gonna replace the same led on that row of line for example you have a Samsung backlight system that requires 3v per led you can replace it with another 3v led universal but you need to know how much what you backlight circuit draws If you backlight uses 3v 1w led I would use a 3v 1.5w led instead by trial and error I found that they last longer than if I would install regular 3v 1w led

Just a couple dots of super glue beside the LEDs and set the lens back down, centered over the LED. Simple.

If you learn how to solder these, you've beaten the system. If you don't, you're at the mercy of the manufacturers and you'll be overpaying for TVs, buying a new one every few years.

clueless video. There is a reason it is recommended to replace all led strings when they start to fail but there is also a firmware update that has to be done as well.

boy it hurts looking you killing this job ! please stop making such poor job ! you have correct tool but not the right technic ! for such job heat gun goes under the strip so you can unsolder the led and same for soldering back the new one without damaging it from direct it. even better and simpler with hot plate
