Keith Richards’ Amp Builder CONFRONTED for Gooping with Red Paint

I got this amp in for repair. It was blowing fuses. I opened it up to find its guts slathered with this red paint. Apparently this model amp won an award from Guitar Player Magazine for their "Editor's Pick" one year in the early 2000s, and it was designed for Keith Richards. This is what happened when I confronted the builder about the paint...

There was absolutely nothing preventing the amp from being repaired. People are just lazy and rely too much on component markings vs. using a proper meter to measure them. If it was a crazy complicated solid state amp, I'd agree here, but that amp is ridiculously simple to identify.

I met Lou at an amp show. We had a great conversation. A few years later I visited his shop and bought an amp. I played it there and he offered to tweak it there while I played. Awesome guy; builds great amps. I bought another from Lou a year or two later. There’s probably one more of his builds I’d love to have. I never had a problem with either of the two amps I own. If I ever had a problem, I’d just fix it (yes, I am a tech) or I’d drive up to see Lou and put it on his bench. IMO, the guy is a Prince.

@@tomstiel7576 I think he was talking about moisture more to the carbon comp resistors in that they are known to drift and are susceptible to moisture. On the other hand I'm not saying you're wrong and I buy all into his explanation, as he states that there are also high quality resistors in there that won't drift. My thoughts are it lies somewhere in-between the -I used a bunch of different parts and it looked like it was thrown together, so the paint gave it a cohesive look- & - probably didn't want it immediately apparent that it was pretty much a lower powered Tweed twin/5f6 circuit. I haven't finished the video yet but I'm wondering if we'll get a wall voltage and subsequent transformer voltages, and maybe some info on construction of the trannies as he mentions that he believes the magic starts there.

Louis is a good guy. I was on part of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd 10 days out tour because I was playing for an artist named Bryan Lee that was the first person to ever let Kenny play on a stage so we spent a lot of time together. Brian actually wrote the lead single off that record. It was a great tour. We had Hubert, Pinetop Perkins, Elizabeth Cotton, Willie Big Eyes Smith, Sam Lay, Chris Layton on drums, and a ton of other killer artists. Hubert had 2 of these amps and Louis took such good care of him and his amps. That was all he used towards the end of his life. I got to play with Duke Robillard's as well when he produced a record for us. Duke's was more like a tweed deluxe with some extra hair on it. Not a shady or crooked bone in his body.

As Dumble told me once, it takes YEARS to develop and choose your circuits and there is value in that, huge value, financial as well as value of your talent to design. But it's SO easy for someone to see the parts and copy what you do without knowing what they choices mean and why they were done; then those people call themselves "amp builders" and designers. So it's clearly simple protection of Intellectual Property.

It would seem more sensible if the standby was linked (in series) somehow, to prevent the Amp from being just directly powered up without standby ... In the current arrangement, it's all too easy just to 'flick the wrong switch' and have a power surge (over 3 Amps at below full input voltage) and leave a continual risk of blowing fuses (as the average guitarist wouldn't know to use a specifically 'slow blow' replacement fuse as opposed to just 'a fuse').
@danmackintosh6325
@danmackintosh6325 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jester-Riddle I think the "standard" type for fuses is slow-blow AKA Time-delay & denoted by a "T" after their rating. If an average dude off the street walked into an electronics store and asked for (whatever rating of) "A" fuse, nearly 100% of the time he'd walk out with slow-blow unless he specifically asked for quick-blow. That said, I do agree it seems a good idea to have them linked in series through a double-throw switch. Only issue there is, the user is then likely to just flick the switch all the way from "off" thru' "on" too quickly for the intermediate position to matter.

I own a very early Louis Electric KR-12. It is a phenomenal amp that has served me well for nearly 15 years. I have it serviced every 12-18 months because I tend to run it full out with an attenuator & variac. Most times it's just a bench fee, other times it's been a retube. I've only ever had one component changed and that was preventative. Louis has been very generous with his time in answering questions for me and for my amp tech when necessary. I get being surprised by the guts but Louis and his amps are top notch.

I’m really glad you handle things this way, Brad. Getting in touch with Louis was a classy thing to do. I don’t know Louis & haven’t played his amps, but I have heard of him & I’ve only heard good things. Got to say though… at first when he was sort of feeling you out & not sure what this was going to be, he did tell you a bit of a different story. “…to keep moisture away.” 🤣 Glad to see a good outcome from this. Love watching your content, Brad. I’ve learned a ton. Thanks 👍🏼

Service tip: Get ahold of one of those (or just make your own) solid state full wave rectifier in an octal base. Simple just two diodes. That way you won't have to dial the amp up as high to get an indication of any shorts or high current draw. Of course go back to the tube rectifier once you know there aren't any issues as the output of the diodes is considerably higher than the tube.

Great vid mate, and what a beautiful sounding amp. This totally reminds me of my Dad, whos in his late 70s now and worked on valve amps his entire life until relatively recently . Even worked on original JMIs for the Beatles in the early 60s. But just hearing screaming about goop cracked me up, it was a regular occurrence in the 70s and 80s apparently mostly due to overzealous patent lawyers but I’d hear him screaming the walls down whenever he seen it ? He actually built my first amp for me back in 82 a lovely Jess ripoff of a B15 . Still have the head somewhere in bits I’m sending him this for a laugh, .

"This is STUPID" And the longer I go on in my own learning about servicing amplifiers. I TOTALLY understand why!

The way I see it, if a big-name pro musician is going to use an amp-maker's products to play a high-profile gig, where the pro musician is trying to earn a living, the amp has to be easily serviceable, especially if the amp is the only one being used by the pro musician, otherwise the pro musician is going to go find another amp-maker to work with, the reason why Marshall have been in business for such a long time is that their early JTM45 and Super Lead amps are serviceable.
