A little background. This video is one of a series. We live streamed 4 concerts on 4 consecutive days. It was in the middle of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, held in NZ and so crew and equipment was in very short supply. Over 4 days we did 4 Brahms Symphonies, some concertos and overtures including this one. Our only rehearsal time was each morning and the full crew was not always available. So to those who say we missed bits - never criticise a director. They took the best shot available to them at the time. We did have a score reader, but as I mentioned we only got to work with NZSO each morning before the concert and this did not include all crew. The full series was Symphonies 1,2,3,4 Piano concertos 1&2 Tragic Overture Festival Overture Violin Concerto Double Concerto They are all available online at www.r2.co.nz/20111012/ This posting on KZfaq was an experiment to see if anyone was interested. If there is enough interest (email me) then we may post the other videos on KZfaq. info(at) r2.co.nz

Actually Guadeamus Ignitur is much, much older than the Brahms, dates from medieval times. Brahms wrote this piece in tribute to a university (which I can't remember) that gave him an honorary doctorate, and the point actually was that he quoted guadeamus in the work, the tune being familiar to the listeners.

Not that it is very important, but it is interesting that french horns play open between 7:08 and 7:12 and not muted as indicated by the composer on the score (measures 266-269). Just a curiosity, anyway.

@@LilanDeSilva6738some basses have a low B string rather than a low C extension on the E string. Very common on German basses, whereas American basses will typically have an extension instead of a fifth string.

OMG, what happened at 3:24-3:28? The strings sounded apart on the beats! Overall a sloppy (or, should I say, sleepy) performance...simply lack the energy you'd experience from others, such as Berstein or Solti versions.

Alan Tang Brahms composed this section with the strings playing the melody and the brass playing a counter melody a 1/2 beat behind the strings - sort of an "echo" effect. The orchestra is following the score impeccably but this particular section does leave some listeners feeling uneasy, like something is amiss. :)

sciotomusicteacher Um, except that they got it right at 08:22-08:29! ;-) Definitely not quite "on the ball" the first attempt at 03:24. (Don't worry, for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain a couple of years ago, we had difficulty with that section as well). :-)
@etiennekambara7814
@etiennekambara7814 8 жыл бұрын
+sciotomusicteacher it's the strings that have a syncopation 1/2 a beat after the brass, which was played perfectly, but then some string sections (1st violins, 2nd?) slowed down while others stayed with the brass. That's why they sound apart. For violin parts, the phrasing seems to end when they stop playing, but the tempo needs to be kept light and constant. If you look at the score, it'll make a lot more sense. Also, rehearsing the morning of the performance seems horrible, taxing, and miserable. I applaud this orchestra for dealing with conflicting sports events.
