I love Giulini's slow tempos. It makes the symphony sing.

What I like about this recording is that Giulini takes his sweet time about it and does not rush it.

Once again Giulini shows that taking your time with the tempo pays off aesthetically.

Just missing musicians like Giulini. This recording gives justice to Brahms: orchestra's sound, solos and phrasing are utterly beautiful.

How I miss him, feels like only yesterday we played it, such bliss w/Giuini on the podium (R.I.P. maestro).

Do you know who plays the concert master solo end of 2nd movement? So beautifully played! Love the romantic vibrato!

Superb version of the Brahms' First by the great Brahmsian Carlo Maria Giulini. The Californian LAPO sounds like a german or Viennese orchestra. Thanks for loading it.

It is a halcyon that everything in music is defined by dynamics and Giulini is one of the greatest examples in this Brahms symphony. Magnificent tempi with an intense concentration that let the music breathe and from which Giulini transmits an inner integrity. A perfect fidelity of the score, an incomparable taste and a contemplative approach of lyrical reflections which is recurrent in all the 4 symphonies with Giulini & LAPO. Thanks for this video !

Oh, oh, oh, the oboe solo in mvt 1 at 2:20 - as John Cerminaro said - “such bliss” - so amazing, then passing to the flute, then to the strings … lovely. This performance deserves all the praise it has gotten. Every time there is a wind/brass interlude it is like layers of beauty upon beauty, the way Brahms should always be.

He attacks this symphony and it’s wonderful. Good Brucknerian too like Klemperer, Jochum and Wand

53 minutes are really too much for Brahms 1st but I like it

the late romantic symphonies seem to be longer lasting than ones from the early romantic and classical era

I'm not sure about repeats, but Karajan/Berlin/1978 take 44 and half a minute. Giulini is known for his preference of slower tempos.

Great, heavyweight but clear sounding Brahms 1. Not sure it needs the repeat in the first movement, especially at that speed. My fav btw is celibadache and the MPO.
