Well, I'm sure if there is anyone to blame it's not the pianist. More likely the placing of the mics by the engineer(s), who probably didn't even insisted on a proper soundcheck.

Of course after Beethoven's op.23 violin sonata the "solo" instrument part is made equal to the piano but in this recording the piano is not only equal but a bit dominating over the viola part. In my mind even a bit too much. Btw this is comming from a piano player :x

The way this piece is written, the Piano at a mf will be way to loud on a Fortissimo on the C and G strings, cant be helped- there are other versions where it is transposed up to Treble Clef, but that version isnt as full or deep as the original

The viola is never gonna be loud enough with the piano :) this is the way it is and the piano part needs to project a lot more to get the harmonies, provide a good support.

@@Nonononono213 ...3 suggestions. 1). The piano could be lid down, or use short stick, whichever sounds better. 2). They could hire a different sound engineer, there is a famous one by the name of Mike Closely. He was used to record the alto flute parts in the Peter Gunn series... 3). The viola could stand further from the piano and nearer to to microphone.
