Thomas Zehetmair (born 23 November 1961 in Salzburg) is an Austrian violinist and conductor. He studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where both of his parents taught. His festival debut was at age 16. He was in master classes with Nathan Milstein and Max Rostal. In 1994, Zehetmair formed a string quartet which bears his name. The Zehetmair Quartet performs all works entirely from memory, and learns one new programme a year. Zehetmair has made several recordings for ECM, both as soloist and with his quartet.

Wow! Bravo! The intonation, technique, and expression are absolutely spot on! But much more than that, they really bring this music to life. You can close your eyes and almost see the glorious sun gleaming over the majestic snow-capped Alpine peaks, feel the cool wind blowing against your face, with the fluffy white clouds against the brilliant blue sky overhead, the pistachio green fields of grass at the foot of the mountain with the occasional sheep and cows grazing here and there , the old, small, cozy little wooden houses scattered about here and there tastefully decorated with the colorful flowers outside their windows, etc...

Once two young women performed this piece. FWR the violinist broke up with the pianist, gifting her a keyboard as attempted consolation, leaving her bawling her eyes out over the lack of closure. And so I will iisten to this piece to better appreciate my friend's loss.

Very good. I assume the words "Thun" and "Meistersinger" or not from Brahms, but from Marketing?

First three notes are the same intervals as the famous "Prize" song from "Der Meistersinger" -- this is probably an intentional quoting as Brahms admired Wagner's music and the song was well known to everybody in Germany. So the sonata acquired that nickname. "Thun" is a reference to the location in the Swiss Alps where Brahms liked to spend his summers -- and where he composed this sonata. So these nicknames were associated with this gorgeous piece written very late in Brahms' life. Brahms himself had nothing to do with nicknames but they were (and are) common because "Thun" may be easier to remember than Opus 100 in A Major (which is how violinists know this piece).
