🎉IMPORTANT🎉 Synchron disputed the safety comparison we made in this video between the Medtronic PED device and the Stentrode because the stentrode is only placed in veins while the PED is used in arteries. They told us that there isn’t nearly the same risk of stroke with this placement. We haven’t validated these claims but will look into it and wanted to represent this perspective

This is an important distinction, as prophylaxis for cerebral venous and arterial stents is different and has different bleeding risks, in addition to the difference in risk of thrombosis causing venous infarct versus arterial thrombosis.

Personally I think the synchron is just too risky to consider, it also lacks capabilities in comparison to neuralink and neuralport. I took a class on engineering ethics this summer, where we learned a lot on biases, how we make choices etc… and at the end we had to do a project where we took a cutting edge technology that was in the works, where we could evaluate its ethics and come to a conclusion on its safety. I chose neuralink. It’s very interesting stuff… the benefits could be tremendous, but the negatives are also just as extreme. When it comes to regulating moods or things such algorithmic predictions, things get fuzzy For example, if a medically diagnosed depressed lady was to have a BCI that regulated her mood to never feel sad again, there could troubles for her to feel sad at appropriate moments such as funerals. Or if the BCI had machine learning and learned to predict certain actions often, it could misinterpret or perform an action at inappropriate times and cause the user to feel uncomfortable or annoyed…. There’s lots and lots to consider when making these devices. The main take away is that we should always do our best to make sure the user is content and minimize negative effects. Another thing to consider is whether or not the user will have total autonomy with these installed or if the BCI is micro controlling how the user chooses…

Yeah these are all really important things that we need to start thinking about. Influencing neural activity and/or listening into brain activity can be a slippery slope for sure, especially when we're talking about things like emotional regulation like you say. There are already devices/there are some in the works right now that are designed for emotional regulation (as far as I know, the devices in this video wouldn't work well for this) for anxiety/depression/compulsion etc. They don't mean that you're happy all the time or _can't_ feel sad, they just try to break that depressive cycle. It's pretty cool. This could def get scary though so it's good to think about it. Thanks for the comment! :)

I like the Stentrode concept better but don't know if it might be limited relative to the others. I'd like to know more about how the brain impulses are transmitted. Is this like pulse telemetry?

Amazing video and well done! I am curious though will Synchron and Blackrock do something for psychiatric disorders like OCD and schizophrenia? The earlier the better you know. I just hope I don't have to wait another 30 years for some type of solution to come out for these psychiatric disorders.

Not sure. I don’t think either device would be suited for this (_maybe_ the stentrode if it was able to be made really small but this is a big if and it doesn’t seem to be a goal of theirs). !Not a doctor! But I’m terms of neurotech solutions, there is active research using Deep brain stimulation (DBS), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and Functional Ultrasound Stimulation to address these issues. The last two are considered low risk.

Hey there thanks for the reply. I appreciate it and thanks for teaching me something new! So, one of my friends's did 30 sessions of Transmagnetic stimulation. It did nothing for him and than he tried psychatric medication and he is still experiencing issues with schizoaffective. Same goes for me. I don't want to wait till 2025. I don't have the willpower to wait a long time as I am on meds for OCD and schizoaffective myself. DBS is dangerous in my opinion. What is functional Ultrasound Stimulation? Also Synchron sounds like it would help so many people out with physical conditions as well as psychiatric issues am I right? I just hope this technology comes out for people like me! Please reply:)

Hello guys! I am writing a paper on BCI, especially on how Neuralink competes with Synchron and Blackrock neurotech. First, great video! I can see you put work into your channel. You gained a new subscriber :) Secondly, I wanted to ask you why Synchron and the media keep deliberately saying that they are the first company to obtain FDA approval for human trials when BlackRock has been implanting invasive BCI on people for many years? Or are there many types of FDA approvals? And do you have any news on Neuralink obtaining FDA approval? I couldn't find recent data about it. Also, I was curious to know your opinion on the ethicality of BCI, especially outside the medical field. What do you think of BCI being commercialised? Thanks, and keep up the excellent work!! :)

Hey thanks for the follow! Synchron can claim (to my knowledge) that they are the first ENDOVASCULAR BCI without issue. Media, not understanding much about neurotech at some point short handed this to first BCI approved. Synchron benefits from this and doesn’t correct it (even though I think they should and this is unethical - at least when they are consulted on the media piece). Haven’t heard anything on Neuralink. I’d be surprised if they’re ready to go into humans given their troubles with the nonhuman primates studies but you never know. They have enough money to push things through. We’ll all have to wait and see for their event if they announce anything cool.

BlackRock has not implanted their electrodes in any patients, nor have they conducted any clinical trials in humans. Instead, BlackRock provides tools to researchers who implant the electrodes in their research subjects, both animals and humans, for their own unique research studies. BlackRock is simply a tool provider. However, they may choose to run clinical trials in the future, but as of now, they have not done so.

I have a 2 questions. (For which I am aching to be answered) sorry for my bad English in advance. (English is not my 1st language). First: How will a bci increase brain function as claimed by several entrepreneurs and futurists. For example, if I have an implant and someone asks me what's 35844 multiplied by 6877 is, how will the bci help me know the solution immediately so I can answer. Will I have to ask my bci and it will tell me the solution like a voice inside my head, (if that's the case then bcis are basically useless as it is the same as asking my assistant verbally on my phone like siri), OR will I just "know the answer" immediately cuz of the bci, if that's the case then just how will that or does that work????. Second: If we finally figure out a bci that can perfectly read motor signals from the brain and relay that info so as to control a virtual character in a game, how then will we move that virtual character without also moving our real bodies. Like if I think to raise my hand or walk so that my virtual counterpart does the same, won't then my real body do the same instead of sitting or laying In a bed like in soa. How will we be able to isolate control between real body and the virtual body. Will the bci have the ability to not only read the motor signals but also shut off the motor signals reaching the parts of our real body ???? So that our real bodies can lie down in a bed while we spin and jump around in the virtual world. If so how will that work???. Please 🙏 I would love these questions to be answered as I not able to find a convincing answer anywhere else or atleast something close to one.

Blackrock's implant is impressive and worth watching, but Neuralink really blasts them out of the water in terms of reach and technological features. The only downside is that we have yet to see a human trial! Hopefully that changes soon.

Elon's neuralink when it comes to terms of reach and technological features? Yeah right, that would probably come in the next decade or probably never. Best we can get is a portion of what they "described" it to be. I am looking forward to a future when scarring/the immune response of the brain is very well machine learned upon, such that it increases the signal to noise ratio. Such innovations would allow machines to continue listening to neurons even after the electrodes have been implanted for several years. The degradation in signal is a gradual process, rather than something that happens all at once and thus seems possible to do in an individualized manner for different people.

I guess it depends on what you mean by read and write. Both the neuroport and the stentrode are capable of recording and stimulating neurons (which is kinda like read and write). I don’t think the stentrode has shown stimulation in humans though. Blackrock neuroport has been around for longer and has used stimulation to give users and artificial sense of touch (translating pressure sensors on a robotic arm to a sense of touch. And all that computer control stuff is definitely due to reading and decoding neurons. But if you’re talking about like sending information to be stored in the brain and then reading information like thoughts that’s really far away to the extent that it’s possible. There are example of devices that can enhance memory but I don’t think any that upload lasting memories. There is also an example where a user was able to think of a word (from a set of 50 words) that could then be decoded and displayed on a computer screen. We did a video about this actually. But that’s still pretty crude. It’s not like someone would be able to read your thoughts the way you think yet

As far as we have been able to identify, I don't think it can be removed without major surgery (so I'd agree). I know they talk about it as a permanent implant. It also gets integrated into the walls of one of the biggest vessels in the brain so I don't see how it could be safely removed. Kinda concerning if you ask me.

@@BCIGuy Definitely, the other potential problem which can happen anyway is clotting and general atherosclerosis. It happens to everyone and especially past age of 40. Stuff gets stuck to the arteries walls and then more attaches to this as is initially caused by inflammation and then cholesterol is made to help fix this but where there no need for the extra cholesterol then it can trouble and clotting when it isn't needed. I just think the mesh wire stuff will cause problems with this. If it was to break away in any possible way it could cause serious damage and death.

Not right now - Synchron hasn't indicated they are working on this. For Parkinsons you need to stimulate specific parts of the basal ganglia, a structure deep in the brain. Their devices cannot currently be placed anywhere outside of the top of the brain so it can't reach this. If it turned out it was safe to implant in really small vessels then maybe you could use it to stimulate these areas. Luckily, there are already clinically approved technologies that work great! They are Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and theirs a system called the molli suit (we made a video on it)

You conveniently neglected to comment on the fact that the BlackRock device is not currently suitable for clinical use. Although the electrode array is an impressive research tool, it is still far from being implantable in patients. To date, it has only been implanted in very specific research participants. This antiquated technology was impressive in its time, but it is unlikely to ever be used clinically. In your video, you portrayed it as a potential winner between the two technologies, but that is far from the truth. This is a crucial point, and the possibility of being sponsored and paid by BlackRock may have contributed to this significant oversight.

Thank you for your comment but that actually isn’t true. Based on their press releases there is every indication that they are planning are planning to create a medical device. The FDA breakthrough designation (which Synchron also has) means they are able to conduct clinical trials. They have also been implanted I over 30 people although Synchron will soon do larger clinical trials

7:44, could this restore sexual dysfunction from SSRI’s? I saw genitals and I was just like ah maybe there’s hope after that really bad experience I had with a psychiatrist giving me the wrong medication that somehow has had a permanent side effect that has made me completely lose interest in finding love, it hurts me till this day but I have another health issue as well. I’m really hoping this along with crispr-cas9 gives me a second chance at life because right now I’m bed bound by physical pain and I don’t take pain pills, I suffer every day I’m just so tired, I want a break, I want to live my life, I haven’t been out of my house since my 20th birthday 2 years ago. Before my traumatic life event, I never had chronic pain or minor ED caused by meds, I never even saw doctors, now I just hate most of them like a dang old person

First off, not a doctor. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this though. As far as I know stimulation or recording of the genitals wouldn’t help with dysfunction. There are sacral neuromodulation (electric stimulation in the spinal cord) that are being researched that might help. Of course, there are lots medications and therapies that are aimed at these issues. Good luck mate😕

@@BCIGuy the unfortunate part about all that is those are treatments and I’m not looking for treatments any more, sounds crazy but you’ll get to a point if you ever have health issues that you don’t want to drink mocha tea, take strong addictive and destructive drugs and do therapy for life. My standards are just too high but I’ll never lower them, I’m 22, not 90 years old, if I was 90 I’d take those treatments but I have a life to get back to lol

@@BCIGuy spinal cord stimulation for ED? it’s believed neurotoxicity is the cause of the issue, missing/dead links in basic terms. For my pain if that’s what you’re talking about it’s in the back of my head, I had nerve decompression surgery in San Francisco but it was a flop so I might look into getting wires in the back of my head this time haha it sounds crazy but I’m in so much pain, I’ll do just about anything but take pills forever

Have you tried a TENS machine for your pain? My wife uses it 3 times a day. She also refuses to take medication as each time she has tried the side effects were worse than what it was treating.

@@DevineOne exactly my reaction to 90% of treatments, I was thinking something along the lens of an implanted device that goes around my occipital region to alter pain signals. I think they call it the occipital nerve stimulator, it worked for a soccer girl my age so I have hope, I was also very athletic like her and could still be if I could manage the pain. Also being able to sleep again would be amazing

Very good video and fascinating. I hope no matter which company develops a BMI first and comes out on top that's great as long as it does what I am hoping - and I am sure most like me are - will come to fruition such as a cure for: Alzheimer's, ALS, MS and Parkinson's as well as other neurological diseases especially the more debilitating ones! And tbh the cool aspects of the technology such as learning languages instantly, matrix like experiences and telepathy! However out of all of them I am rooting for Elon Musk's NeuraLink... in Musk I trust lol

For sure! Of course, the neuroport is designed to help people move/comunicate/use a computer, but some have used it to game! Check out BCICanDoBetter on KZfaq (Nathan Copeland's channel). He has videos of him playing pacman, sonic, and final fantasy using the Blackrock implant. Ì had a bci put in me maliciously during a surgery. It's the stentrode version they used me to build the algorithms you experiment with. Try explaining this to an ignorant doctor lead to them leaning towards mental illness because they have limited motor function. Try explaining voices and irregular movements and you'll seem crazy. The Stent is hard to see via ct scans if not at the right angle.

I'm still gonna get Neuralink when available, it does not matter to me who received the permission for clinical trials first. Neuralink's technology is vastly superior in capabilities and safety in comparison to either Neuroport or Synchron... from the design perspective, and implantation. The Neuralink's robot will be much more consistent and accurate than humans when operating (it will also make it a lot cheaper and accessible) and the chip itself connects to the brain with threads which is much less dangerous than stiff needles. Additionally, Elon has proven himself time and time again that he has good intentions (and is effective) in regard to whatever he's doing and I have no idea about who's pulling the strings in BlackRock or Synchron companies.

I agree that Neuralink has some seriously cool tech but I wouldn’t say they’re ahead. I think the threads idea is cool but we don’t know how safe it is. There hasn’t been a lot of transparency and we know there were some health issues with the non-human primates they were using. I do think it will work and I do think it will be huge but idk right now I’d definitely rather have something that we know is safe… like in the long run. Neuralink just isn’t there yet. There are also companies developing other types of interfaces as well like neural dust (small individual recording/stimulating systems) that might be huge as well. I think, like we say in this video, different devices are gonna be good for different things.

@@BCIGuy Well, Elon's approach to innovation is based on rapid iteration, so even if there were some initial issues that I'm not aware of (new technologies always have some issues) I think they will be solved really fast if they're not already solved. When thinking Intuitively though, super thin threads definitely seem less dangerous than needles due to being flexible and allowing for more vibration resistance (especially important in case of accidents which happen all the time... to not cause any severe brain damage) and generally being less invasive to the point that the robot implanting the device can literally omit blood vessels and prevent any bleeding from the brain itself. Another very important part of such a device will be the software side and more specifically the neural algorithms/AI which Elon's companies already have a lot of experience in and are one of the best in it. Having a hardware interface is one thing but being able to interpret those signals is equally important and will determine usefulness / possible applications.

Thin threads are also transferring less heat and with efficient algorithms, the device will require less power (and if wireless, the batteries themselves also produce a lot of heat). I think it would be really good if those things are thought through as early as possible by other companies, they could reach out to DeepMind and establish some partnership... if anyone can match or exceed Elon's team at AI software - that will be DeepMind.
