Had a brain and ear MRI this morning. Nothing to worry about, yes the machine is loud and you are in a confined space which may make some people uneasy but the technicians are always so nice and make you feel at ease, you can close your eyes and listen to music which helps a lot, also they put a mirror on the head aerial clamp so you can look out. Overall took 30-40 mins. Machine makes lots of weird and wonderful sounds each scan but that’s it, you can talk to the technician at any time and come out of the machine any time incase of panic. You do of course go head first but only the top half of your body goes in, your waist and below are out of the machine. Overall it wasn’t too bad, not the most pleasant of things to do but it’s all for the right reasons.

I had this procedure yesterday although it was a brachial plexus MRI which took approx 50 mins. I wanted to walk away when they told me I’d have to wear a head coil thing over my head..think that’s what it’s called! I was so anxious but the two technicians were so kind, patient and gave me some really helpful tips that made the procedure manageable. Their patience and reassurance was what got me through it as well as music. I would say to anyone that is nervous of this procedure, just close your eyes before they put the headpiece on, keep them closed and focus on the music. I sang the words in my head and thought about my little dog having a wonderful time. It’s surprising how your body gets used to the sensations so just stay focused on listening to what you’re hearing and lovely thoughts. Before you know it, it’s over. I think I was nervous due to feeling trapped but it’s only a thought and not real as you can come out at anytime. 😊

if your worried about getting an mri scan then don’t worry, i wasn’t looking forward to it at all, although it was not terrifying at all and if anything relaxing. the noises are not loud and you can barely hear them with music. inside the scanner keep your eyes closed and think that you are in an open space, it helps a lot.

I was in one yesterday for the first time for a brain scan. I was freaking out a little at first because I had no idea they were going to snap the other covering unit over my head and i felt like I couldn't breath. The technician moved some of the padding from under my head to give me a little more room and so my nose wasn't pressing against the head unit. They had the head phones and ear plugs but what really helped was they gave me an air hose that I could point towards my face for some air. The other thing that help was going into imagination mode. For me it was piloting a Boeing 777 and having to go through different sounds during flight. Childish maybe but hey it worked for me. Hope I never have to do it again though. I was in there for 68 minutes for a battery of tests plus some dye they shot in me. All in all it was clearly painless. I actually fell asleep for a few minutes.

68 minutes?! I’m freaking out because my pcp simply mentioned me getting one. I’ve had one done on my back, but it was less than 20 minutes and I wasn’t all the way in; claustrophobia and anxiety will make this so challenging for me. Sheesh.

@@muffycompany8879 Yeah it was a lot longer in the procedure than what my Dr said it would be. For me, I just felt like I wasn't getting enough air. That air hose they provided was a real big help. Some suggestions: explanations for the reason for aligning to certain anatomy. You did explain the purpose for the diffusion but not the other axials, coronal, or sag. I think it would be nice if you explained the appearance of old vs new stroke, old vs new blood, etc. You did remind to check you images as you scan, but you said this AFTER the contrast injection, this reminder would be better stated early in the exam. I do like your website, just wished you alphabetized the exams. I hope you all the best and hope my suggestions are helpful.

I had an open MRI brain scan with and without contrast done today and was highly anxious about it after reading all the bad comments. I asked the techs to cover my eyes before they put the head cage on and before they put me in scanner as I did NOT want to have claustrophobia to kick in. Worked well for me and I was able to just deep breath and relax. I asked my doctor for some meds and they calmed me down so much after 10 minutes in the machine I actually fell asleep. Total time was approximately 30 min. Don’t look forward if I ever have to do it again but todays experience has taken the fear out of me. 😊

I had a brain MRI this morning - yeah it was loud - but not sure why people find it scary? Is it scary because you dread the possibility that they'll find something horrible? And still I am scared to death. One of the worst nightmares is being burried alive and doing this MR is almost like my nightmare coming tru. This mask over face doesnt help as well as the fact that when doing brain MR you cannot talk. I am also scared of the results. At the same time I want to know whats wrong with me and make it better. I guess when you dont have anxiety its easier to rationalise this exam and know its just one hour of your whole lifetime. My mom says a lot of people give up,especialy men. Some even go theough general anastesya. Came to see this video maybe to help me knowing how it looks. Hope I will make it and everything will be ok

I am scheduled for a brain MRI next month to keep check on a hemangioma that was found on an ear CT scan last year (small and very slow-growing, so no need for removal). I've heard there are some special glasses that you can wear that give you an "alternate view" of your surroundings. Hoping that Duke Medical Center has them. Also, I'm not sure about lying flat on my back. I broke my coccyx twice many years ago and have chronic low back pain. Lying on my back is extremely uncomfortable.

For everyone that says it isn’t scary: try being a bigger person being absolutely smooshed together. The sounds aren’t scary and the procedure itself but you can panic because it’s absolutely confining and the bigger you are, the worse it is. It really is all about MIND OVER MATTER in there. Close your eyes and try to focus on the music that they kindly give you. It feels like going to a torture chamber with the head cage, or a coffin so be prepared. It isn’t painful though, nothing is painful about an MRI. But be mentally prepared if you’re easily claustrophobic. I’m not but it’s a very tight squeeze; not like a big CT SCAN machine. MRI Machines are small and cramped. You panic about the what if scenarios. What if the machine breaks, what if the technician can’t hear the buzzer, what if the technician is a lunatic, what if I have a heart attack in here, the what ifs are what causes panic given that situation. The technicians try to keep you calm and try to make it a better and slightly less horrifying experience.

Somebody need to do the examination - with the PC/Workstation. Thats the radiological technologist. MRI needs a perfect as possible (homogeneous) magnetic field. this would be destroyed leaving the door open. Since MRI also works with Radiofrqeuency Impulses, you would get extreme artifacts within the pictures (works like a faraday cage). I am a Radiological Technologist myself. MRI has no harming radiation. The only thing that can be a problem is the strong magnetic field - for patients with implants, (old) tattoos, pacemaker..contrast media can also be a problem to some patients. But alls those factors are being checked multiple times before an examination is being performed.
