Would you take the deal that Verna proposed? YES or NO? Comment your answer below!

I guess Roderick wouldn't have taken it if he knew that the deaths would be do gruesome. But Verna, as seen throughout the series, gave people the death that they deserve. So, because the mode of killing Gris was so cruel, 'gruesome' was set in stone for his destiny anyway. (Although both psychopaths showed no remorse in the end, so may he would have ).

No. I’d never trade my future bloodline for my success. The deal is “I’ll let you build. Kingdom. But you have to watch it burn to the ground before you die. And die with the final realization you coveted the wrong thing.” Essentially the deal is a life wasted.

And it showed how evil and selfish he was to KEEP having children. Madeline was a psychopath and didn't have kids because she never wanted them anyway. Roderick was a man-whore who refused to wear a condom so was perversely enjoying bringing bastard children into the world knowing they'd die prematurely.

I dont think Verna is meant to be a demon. Even though her moral compass is pretty ambiguous, it’s clear she’s closer to good than bad. She never comes off as being sinister, and she enjoys killing off bad people while feels remorseful about killing Lenore. Since this is a Poe-inspired story, I think she’s more meant to be a physical embodiment of death. Like a Grim Reaper type of character, similar to Shachath from American Horror Story. When Roderick mentions that ravens are considered “servants of the devil” at the bar, she even counters this by saying ravens are actually considered good luck in some cultures.

She always gave the Ushers a chance to change for good. The Ushers were so stuck up, so entitled, so privileged, so in love with what they were none of them were ready to accept their flaws. Yes, Madeline and Frederick were the main culprits but the Usher siblings (with the exception of Lenore) were flawed.

It very much had the analogy of the boomers decision to chose their lives being great and having their kids pay the price down the road. I think the moral of the story was "accept the life fate intends for you, don't try to circumvent it". Take Arthur Pym, he was probably the evilest of them all, but Verna gave him a chance to make a deal with her to escape spending the rest of his life in prison. His reply was basically, "No Deal. I made my choices I'll live with the consequences of them." And of all the characters with the possible exception of Lenore, he was the only one Verna looked on with genuine respect.
@wanderingseth
@wanderingseth 8 ай бұрын
There was nothing to suggest Verna was a minion of Satan. Where did that come from? She was the Raven - a spirit of 'consequence' - i.e. the spiritual embodiment of karma. She claimed to be sad that they Ushers hadn't walked down a path of light. She took no pleasure in killing an innocent, only those who deserved to go out in suffering. She wasn't evil, and there was nothing in the series about her being Satan's minion. HP Lovecraft was also credited as inspiration for the story, anchoring this series on the genre of cosmic horror. The Raven fits perfectly into that world, and by her own admission, she has been making deals with humans since ancient times. That doesn't make her satanic. Don't force her into a Christian mythological framework.

The writings of Edgar Allen Poe percolate the whole series from the mask of the red death to the raven . It centres around the gothic macabre of the inevitability of death and the bargaining of life . Any specific Religion has nothing to do with things . Retribution, contrition and the human condition are in my opinion, core features . Karma, serendipity , reap what you sow are central themes of most moralistic storytelling

@rubyrayne8
@rubyrayne8 8 ай бұрын
But topside just means above the water line, or on a ship’s deck or something. She is out of space and time. So topside to me just means coming into their space and time. Agree with everyone who says she has nothing to do with Satan. She was death, bargaining of life and the consequences it can bring. She clearly had compassion for others. I think people are just use to a “deal with the devil” troupe so they don’t stop to think about the actual character’s actions.

@christianne7157
@christianne7157 5 ай бұрын
Interesting take. Tammy is not sloth, though. I think it's vanity that's her major flaw (vanity is a form of pride). There is a vanity in how she likes to 'watch herself' with Bill. There is vanity in how she decorates everywhere with mirrors so she can constantly look at herself. Her enterprise focuses on external appearance too. I think she's similar to Victorine in her ambition to earn her father's approval and to be popular. She is also guilty of pride in the way she snubs her half-siblings and in how she uses Bill. Maybe Leo is sloth? To be honest, I think he was more likable than most of the Ushers despite his addictions. He is the only one who shows emotion at Prospero's death and he had given him a bit of a motivational talk before the party. He seems shocked by his family's practical tactics after the massacre. Leo doesn't go about trying to harm others and he seems genuinely concerned for Fredrick when he asks for a hit. He does seem to be lusty when he has the fangirl over... but then again it seems like she was grateful for the opportunity and he does not come across as cruel. The cat lie was an attempt at making things right which got out of hand. I guess, what I'm trying to say is, his faults seem minor compared to the others and though I don't fault Verna's other executions, I feel she could have been kinder to Leo. I think sloth suits him better because he seems to prefer to disassociate and take the 'easier' way out by lying than take action or tell the truth. I don't know who to pin gluttony on though.

There's literally nothing in the show to indicate that Verna was "a minion of Satan", only that she was some kind of karmic spirit. In the original poem The Raven, which she's named after, there are references to the bird having come from hell/the afterlife/the underworld, but there's nothing in the show to say as much. If she was truly from Satan as he's usually portrayed, she would have killed Lenore horrifically, and probably would have kept pushing Arthur until he accepted the deal, or just killed him outright for trying to kill her. Also, not only are the episodes all named after Poe's stories, and mostly plotted in a slightly similar way to those stories, but pretty much every single character is also named after a character in Poe's works - aside from Rufus Griswold and William Longfellow, who are named for rivals of Poe's - as are the pharma company Fortunato, the drug Ligadone, the ship in the bottle - the Grampus - which is also Lenore's nickname for Roderick. I guess you could go so far as to say that every single name spoken or written in the show is another Poe nod.

I think verna is Tekeli-li. In backstory of Arthur Pym, in hes expedition, he found hollow earth and creature named Tekeli-li living in there. When Verna and arthur talk she say: "You dont remember me?" "I had to go top side, you saw me standing on the ice" "The name "Tekeli-li" comes from the cry of a shoggoth, a creature in Antarctica from At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft. This was in turn taken from "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" by Edgar Allen Poe, where it is an exclamation of woe and suffering by a people of Antarctica."

Or maybe Rodrik gets snipped and adopts? Keep the body count to 2. After all, Freddy's wife and Juno were Ushers and lived. Maybe adopted kids would be spared too - can't be part of the bloodline if you haven't been born in it. Rodrik could have ignored his biological children and parented his adopted children instead. If he was serious about the deal he should have poisoned the bio kids (the wouldn't have a full life anyway unless he outlived them) and since Verna promised no consequences, he's free to emotionally neglect an adopted child that will outlive him. Anna would be upset but, he didn't care when he bribed his kids to live with him why should he care about her now. Verna just said that the bloodline had to end when he died, not that he couldn't end it himself or that he couldn't give the name to an biologicly unrelated to him kid. If he wants to play it safe he would need to have 2+ adopted kids by the time he dies: one to share the name and one to keep an unrelated name. That way Verna would take at best only 1

There is no life without pain...that was their first mistake. We learn from pain, we know something is wrong with the feeling, we know we need to heal if we feel pain...pain is necessary evil. That said, more logic way of thinking is there is something wrong when pain is there, painkiller is anesthetic , just mask that pain is not there, it is, hurt is too..and you can be hurt even more if you do not feel that you are weak and need to heal. Same here, they took the deal not to feel any life pains, and that masked how they were weak and needed to heal...and they all died at the end. Poetic. Plus moral of the story is there is not shortcuts, you have to do it the hard way, keep your morals, even if you feel pain, you will heal...masking it will be your downfall. You will not see how rotten you are from the inside. Really poetic. I love this show. Short, but good.

Verna wasn’t a malevolent character, in fact it might be inaccurate to call her a “character” full stop; she was a force, the very embodiment of The Deal, of the idea that debts must always be paid, and that there are always loopholes and curlicues in every contract, but the contract itself is _never_ broken. The raven holds a very important role in many cultures, including Native American, Egyptian, Greek, Scandinavian & Celtic. Some roles include trickster, prophecy, shapeshifter, mediator between life & death, carrier of souls to the Other worlds, dispenser of justice & are intimately connected to several gods & goddesses, including Odin, the Morrigan, Apollo, Bran the Blessed & others. I could not figure out which raven aspect Verna was, but Roderick & Madeline were obsessed with ancient Egypt, so maybe Horus. Anyway, no way was she a minion of Satan. That would be so boring.

I saw Verna as a ‘Minion of Satan’. Something which ravens were described as in the show. So she almost acts on behalf of the devil in making the deals. That’s one way it can be interpreted.

The scene where the lawyer asked Usher if he was sure his sister was dead was odd dark comedy. He just basically answered in a way where he was almost laughing. He wasnt sure if the woman he just gouged the eyes out of was dead. When she grabbed his neck and strangled him I actually laughed because it was such a surprise and he deserved it. There was nothing sad about him and his sister's deaths or the rest of the family members. They fully deserved it. The political speech the sister gave at the end was ridiculous. I get that Flanagan had a message but when youre about to die do you go political? I think the speech was out if place. Earlier on the show would have been a better time for that. IMO
@jamesclarke2813

Glad you liked the series; I loved it and would put it on a par with Hill House. I feel like giving the characters philosophical monologues is just a very Flanagan thing, like the wonderful speeches in Midnight Mass. I understand how you feel about Madeleine’s speech at the end, but I loved it and I think it kind of fits for me personally because she knows she is no longer able to avoid death and she is reckoning with her legacy. She is trying to rationalize the evil that she has done to the world through Fortunato and justify it by saying that the world is full of greed and evil-doing and she and Roderick were just playing the same game. In the end she doesn’t take any responsibility or feel remorse for her actions.

Why do we need an ending explanation for the series? It wasn’t complicated. Lot of unnecessary woke brainwashing agenda politics pushed all throughout the show though. It’s be nice to be able to just watch a movie or show without having all that shoved in our face. People have different political point of views and politics needs to stay out of entertainment. Movies and shows are suppose to be a nice brief escape from the craziness of the real world for a bit. These shows are obviously politically controlled by rich power hungry millionaires and billionaires though.
