Brake booster / vacuum servo check - test your own car

An explanation of how to carry out a test of your brake booster on your own car, this test is the same for any car that has a brake booster/vaccum servo fitted.
Depending where you live in the world the brake booster is AKA vacuum servo AKA power booster.
If after these test you suspect that you may have a fault with your power booster, the first places to check are the hose from the vacuum pump/manifold (wherever your booster gets its vacuum from) up to the check valve/non-return valve on the servo unit itself. If they check out then listen for a hissing around the vacuum unit and ask a friend to operate the foot brake pedal with the engine running while you have a look.

my car stalled the other day and brake pedal was impossible to push down until I restarted....any ideas

Hi Phil. The servo unit should be able to hold a certain amount of vacuum after the engine stops, normally enough for a couple of pedal presses. If the pedal was hard straight away, there's probably a leak. First place to check is the non return valve where the hose goes into the servo as that should hold the vacuum in the servo. Do the engine revs dip when you press the pedal at idle?

Great video I've Watched 5 videos and this one is , well I'm no mechanic but I understood it. My breaks stick and take a few seconds to release. I've put a new vacuum pump on, and the hose and non return valve are working fine. Any ideas why this is happening.

My navara starts but will only run if I pump the brake pedal and it really struggles at that. Any idea?

When i start the engine after keeping pressure on the pedal the pedal started to pushing my foot backwards

What if the pedal is rock hard, but goes to the floor when you start the engine? Is that a servo issue?

The servo is what helps the the pedal go down. If it goes down too far, there might be an issue with the brake lines (fluid leak, air bubble) or maybe brake pad wear?
