Love your videos man! Keep up the good work. Quick question, I been looking around but I can’t seem to find a solid answer. I’m looking at replacing my stock calipers on my 3.6 L 2LT/RS with Brembo. I’ve read that the front ones can be replace with a 4 piston but I’m not so sure about the rear. I’ve seen some 4 piston for the rear but not sure if it will fit.

Hi, about to perform the exact same maintenance on my car this week. Quick question : After you’ve remove the old brake pads and retaining clip, how were you able to swivel your wheel assembly left to better access the rear of the caliper and remove the bolts attaching it to the rotor? I noticed that all four tires had been removed, so were you able to do this because your car in neutral?

For fasteners that have a critical torque value, I'd highly recommend using Loctite. I've seen impact torqued fasteners come loose from vibration because Loctite wasn't used. I'd also recommend an actual torque wrench because of bolt stretch over time.
@MultiEmoto
@MultiEmoto 5 жыл бұрын
The concern with your approach is that unless the factory indicates to use thread-locking compound, putting it on the fastener affects the torque. The torque numbers are for a dry fastener; not one that is wet with loctite, so you are actually over-torqueing with loctite because it acts as a lubricant until it sets up. The other point is that the way to loosen loctite is by applying heat, so using it on brake calipers, which happen to generate a lot of heat, may not be terribly effective. I recommend using the factory torque spec on clean, dry bolts for brake calipers.
@benjamincanfield282
@benjamincanfield282 3 жыл бұрын
@@MultiEmoto The red loctite needs to be heated up to a temp of 500 degrees. I am not sure how hot the brakes are actually getting during use, but I imagine it is not hot enough. Had to use a torch to get the caliper bolts off (first time coming of). I have always used blue loctite which seems to work better and saves your knuckles getting the calipers off again.
@MultiEmoto
@MultiEmoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjamincanfield282 You may well be correct about how hot calipers get; I have not measured one. Brake caliper bolts are probably not the most specification-sensitive threaded fasteners in existence, but I still like to install all safety-related things strictly by the book. If I had caliper bolts getting loose, it might mean any of several things, but I might first get new bolts and inspect the receiving threads carefully. YMMV.

Only time you should open the valve is if you are bleeding fluid out for a flush or if you replace a brake line.. or a caliper. If doing a normal routine brake job, the valve stays closed.

My pads are fairy worn out, so I went to my mechanic to get a quote in pads. They told me these brembo brakes systems should ONLY use brembo oem parts and the rotors should never be cut because of the amount of heat these generate, the pads would wear out even faster from the amount of metal you are removing from the rotors. They would have to be replaced. What are your thoughts/experience about this?

@lethalgarage thanks for your vids; general info follows: those dang front caliper bolts (from factory i own the car since new. 66k miles now), 2017 camaro 1SS. turns out is 18mm. \Start my saga: due to limited clearance maxed out my ratchet style torque wrench (150ft-lb). broke easily, then after a few turns, got stuck. then tried an pneumatic impact wrench (,maybe air compressor wasnt pushing enough scfm's) , nope wont go past a certain point. then put some wd40, tried again. nope. gave up. used the torque wrench tighten then up again, just enough so i can the car to my mechanic. goal was to install brand new slotted/drilled Powerstop rotors with low dust Brembo pads. /end of my saga

thanks for attempting to help, maybe next time think of including the location of the rear bolts and their sizes as those are the only parts we cant see and theres like 92738 bolts back there

Additional info you WILL need regarding front only. 2016 SS. It's a great video but what Lethal Garage does not show you clearly and explicitly is there are 4 smaller bolts on the back of the caliper. DO NOT take those out. I did take them out and then the caliper began leaking brake fluid. I am not referring to the "bleeder" screw. There are two rather large hex head bolts on the back that you do need to take out to get the caliper off. They are both the same size. On the head of the bolt they read "SFP 10.9". I used a 13/16ths socket and big ratchet to get them out. I had to put a break over bar on and use a 2 pound hammer on the break over bar to get the bolts loose. The slide pins that hold the pad clips are both the same size, there is no difference in top and bottom pins. If you have never done brake pads before then I do not recommend this job for for you as it is a few degree more difficult than most brake pad changes I have done on other vehicles. I did both the pads and rotors this time and it was a bitch. The rotors were rusted and seized to the hub big time. I had to hammer with that 2 pound sledge to bust the rotors loose and get them off. If you screw up the little screw that holds the rotor and cant get it out then just drill it out. If you're the type that doesn't like a pain in the ass then I recommend that you don't do it. If you don't mind a real PITA and dropping a few dozen F-Bombs then go ahead.

Why would you ever take the bleeders out? Not needed to Shane pads…
@artkyger3425
@artkyger3425 Жыл бұрын
@@Lethalgarage I didn't say bleeders. The bleeder screw is one single screw and faces up with a rubber seal. I am talking about the 4 bolts on the back. Not the single bleeder screw.
@Lethalgarage
@Lethalgarage Жыл бұрын
@@artkyger3425 technically their are 4 bleeder screws. Not even sure why you would even try take those other bolts off. I clearly show all you need to remove here.

Not really fond of using the marker...most stores will loan you a torque wrench if you don't have one..later in the video I see you have one and didn't even use it to put the calipers back.

I don't understand why people do car work in flip flops. Gonna lose a toe at some point. Breaking lose bolts with a torque wrench is also a bad idea. Indexing the suspension bolts is also a bad idea. They stretch. Use that torque wrench and some blue loctite on suspension bolts. You don't want them coming out.

Knew a guy who wore steel toes, car feel off the stand onto his foot, steel toe cut all his toes off. Instead of probably the one tow he would of lost wearing flip flops 🤣
