I loved fixed brakeless most of my cycling life but after turning 50yrs old the joints can’t take it anymore and the recovery isn’t what it used to be. I have conceded and run a freewheel. I love single speed riding so this allows me to do that without as much suffering. Besides, I have nothing to prove to anyone but myself. Do what you enjoy.

I pay more attention riding a brakeless fixed gear. Whenever I’m at a intersection or whatever it may be when I need to look for on coming traffic but with a brake I’m a little bit lazier since I know I can press it as well stand up to slow down with my legs since I can’t skip.

Dave Noakes oh ya definitely, I am also used to it since I usually ride a brakeless bmx . So riding a brakeless fixed gear gives a bit more control though I can’t skip as mentioned but where I live people drive like they’re insane and I need to always be alert. So having to look for what’s straight ahead and to the sides more detailed because of no brakes helps me. Since I have to give myself a little bit of extra room to get my speed down if needed.

I ride with and without a brake, depending on the day/ride. If I'm riding brakeless, I've probably got clipless pedals/shoes on because I really wanna be able to drag the bike to a stop if I need to. But I've got another bike that I typically run a brake + flats/straps for more casual days

60k on tired legs with a fixie good job I'd say. As for brake debate personally for myself I'd want a front brake. I can see from your vids your handling skills, experience on the bike give you the confidence that you don't need a front brake. I know others may disagree with that but as they say it's horses for courses. Great vid by the way.
@DaveNoakes
@DaveNoakes 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. It was a long 60km 😂 I’m all down for personal choice but it’s tricky with brakeless, it is illegal so I shouldn’t encourage it. I don’t think everyone should do it, but I honestly don’t see it as a huge problem if people choose not to have one.

Building up my first SS bike, and plan to start out with a freewheel cog and Fr brake until I know how it feels and handles on my local roads, but want to eventually move over to fixed/brakeless. So my question is: Mentally, how do make, commit to, and stick with that switch?
@DaveNoakes
@DaveNoakes 3 жыл бұрын
Cool, so I would recommend when you switch to fixed ride it with brakes and see how little you can use them, that way in an emergency they are there if you need them. It’s all about time, your legs and brain will get used to it and soon you’ll be dialled in nicely.

Nobody has mentioned the law. In many countries brakes are required, front and back. I believe you only need a front brake because you can use your legs to slow the rear wheel. In fact I think in England only a front brake is required. So if you ride where police are present, learn your local laws. I commonly ride and never feel the need to use my brakes, but they're there just in case.
@DaveNoakes
@DaveNoakes 3 жыл бұрын
I think I mentioned in my previous fixed gear vlog about it being illegal to ride brakeless here in the uk. I’d never recommend people do it as if essentially be encouraging people to break the law.

I ride with brakes (at least a front) because I don't have the control to slow myself down above a cadence of about 130 and it's a complete waste of hills if you have to fight the hill on the way down as well as the way up! :)

an idea for a video, put a power meter on the fixed gear and do a certain route. Then do the same route on the road bike with power meter and compare TSS on both rides. only way to prove riding fixed is twice as hard.

Good idea, the only issue with power meters is they only measure forward power so the resistance when you back pedal wouldn’t count.

I definitely understand the debate, but riding brake less isn’t something that happens overnight. For me, I was riding with a front brake and trying to use it as little as possible to get the idea, but I found the first few days I took the brake off, I was much more cautious. it takes months to get comfortable riding brake less. And yeah it does increase the chance of a crash if you’re not careful, but have you really ridden a bike if you haven’t crashed, it’s just a part of the sport.

The brake Vs. brakeless debate is difficult, because most people will argue you should always have one fitted because it's the law. The thing is, if you're used to riding without one, chances are you won't use it if you fit it, so why do it? I've seen enough people riding round on bikes with 1 brake disconnected (or even 2...), poorly maintained brakes that hardly stop them etc. that I don't think brakeless fixed riders are problem. All of the people I know who do it know how to handle a bike and can stop better than many people out there, they're certainly safer than a lot of people I see on the road. Personally, I almost always have a brake fitted, mainly because I ride my fixed gears on club runs so I definitely need a brake and I use drop bar levers, so taking them off is a faff, but I am considering having a set of bars for my all-road fixed gear with no brake that I can swap in when I'm doing a fully off-road ride. Even with a brake fitted, I've done loads of rides where I haven't touched it and I can't remember the last time I used it when I commute through the centre of Glasgow (and that's not just because of lockdown). I honestly think it's a small issue blown out of proportion by a lot of people who have never done it and don't really understand it. Also, as the fixed gear counts as a brake in the UK, it's not really brakeless. Maybe dropping that name would help?

Learn to use a brake. I have yet to see a guy on a fixie without a brake actually stop when he's supposed to if I'm riding nearby for any period of time. I'm sure you'll say you do but I'm also sure you don't. My decades of cycling experience have told me this. People ride without brakes because of their egos.

Joe Joe alright Joe. You are the prime example of people who struggle to put their opinion across without coming across as a judgmental know it all. You clearly state you don’t believe that people can stop even if they can...it’s all a bit school of Donald Trump for me. Lets be honest, you don’t ride fixed gear...you’ve commuted for a few years and have somehow decided you’re cyclings expert on everything. You make loads of incorrect assumptions and show you’ve no idea what you’re actually talking about. People do not need to learn to use brakes, they are pretty easy to work out. 🤦🏻‍♂️ You could learn so comment in a more constructive and less up your own arse way though.
@steelisreal
@steelisreal 3 жыл бұрын
@@DaveNoakes it's a strange comment for Joe Joe to make considering I even said I always have a brake fitted. As for stopping where I want to, I ride fixed gear on club runs with riders on geared bikes. I can definitely stop where I want to and need to both with and without a brake. I wouldn't be out in bunches if I couldn't!

Pretty much nobody should ride a brakeless fixed gear. I have a lot of experience riding and racing every type of bike you can imagine for decades. If you're riding a fixie without a brake, it's for ego. Put a damn brake on and stop pretending every time you run through a stop light and almost get killed that you knew what you were doing.
@DaveNoakes
@DaveNoakes 3 жыл бұрын
So not everyone then? I don’t run red lights. So you mention you’ve ridden and raced every type of bike, did that included fixed gear? Your entitled to your view....not matter how pushy it is. I mean it ain’t going to make me put a brake on...I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I know you may find this hard to believe but you can ride brakeless safely. It’s not all racing and running red lights. There’s no pretending here, how about you try commenting in a less rude and judgemental way? Also quit pretending you’re some Jedi of bike racing...we all know you’re not Joe.
