The Superstar headmold vs. the Millie headmold.... I don't know where the magic was (or still is), but each doll with the current Millie sculpt looks the same. Even though there are hair colour changes, 2 (or 3) different skin colours and closed mouth variation added, she still can't beat dolls with the Superstar facemold. And the quality of the recent playline (and even higher priced) Barbie dolls isn't that good anymore... That sticky glue in their heads, plastic bodies, too many "errors" in the facial painting, bad quality outfits with prints only at the front sides... I love the 80's and 90's Barbies! Yaaas!

Oh Jason, you are too kind. I like that you always try to see the positive side when it comes to dolls like this, and that's a great quality to have as a person. But...this doll is a complete mess. Let's be blunt here. She looks like she got dressed in the dark; the arbitrary neon colors, the lack of consistent style, the random patterns everywhere, and of course the lack of quality and details. If I reviewed this doll, I would give this a big fat zero. Zero. The original doll's outfit is more coherent, has better quality and looks more put together, but that was back when Mattel actually cared. Now Mattel is very business-driven and they hardly care about the quality of these dolls. That's why they keep cheapening every doll brand they have, and as long as they keep making money, they're not gonna care what the fans think. That's why if we keep accepting terrible dolls like this, then we're always gonna get less than mediocrity.

I just distinctly remembered getting the original live instrument playset for a birthday at my grandma's house - and almost breaking into tears because I didn't have any of the dolls with me that day LOL. Thanks for bringing back a cherished memory :) I'm on Team Retro any day! That said, I feel she has more going for her than the average fashionista. Love the open-minded Review!

I love the original Barbie and the Rockers dolls, and I thought it was interesting when I saw that they were bringing back the line. I agree with you about the quality of the recent Barbies, they aren't as good anymore. I have a few of the original Barbie and the Rockers dolls, but I haven't seen any of the new ones in person yet. I like the '80s-inspired look that the new dolls have, but at the same time, the style seems kind of random. While the mix-and-match aspect of her outfit is a fun concept, I think it would have been better if they gave her one complete outfit. Still, I look forward to seeing where Mattel will take the Barbie and the Rockers line and how it will grow. As far as the original Barbie and the Rockers cartoon, I like Jem and the Holograms better, but the Barbie and the Rockers dolls were awesome. Great review!

I am a fan of the original Barbie And The Rockers line, and I have both the 1986 and 1987 versions of all the characters, and dupes of some of them. I also have the 2009 repro of the 1986 Barbie, like the one featured in this video. I think the repro is prettier than the original in some ways, especially her hair. I remember back in the day when I bought my original sets of these dolls, the hair wasn't all that great right out of the box, so even those wonderful old dolls needed a little styling to make them pretty. This new doll line doesn't really grab me, it's kind of not the aesthetic that I'm drawn to, but I don't think it takes anything away from the original. If anything, it makes the original even prettier by comparison. I know some people will love this new line, and that's great. The wonderful thing about collecting is that there is something for everyone and there are no wrong answers when it comes to the question "what do you love?"

Just wash her hair with shampoo and conditioner. It honestly makes there hair nicer, I also trim it up while it's wet, maybe even a short bob would be cute on her for a more edgy look . You could also paint some cool make up or face paint on her and make her look more rockery ! Also a made to move body would help lol

I have the original Rockers from the '80's...my all time favorite Barbie line. Glad to see her back...I think she's cool! Rock on Barbie !

Thank to your review I can see the positive sides of the use of the name of the Iconic 80s Line ,as someone who had them back in the 80s and now 32 years later gets to collect dolls and most of them are 80s and 90s ,I was very enraged of the dis honor they made to the line,so even if it is a lame intent (as the dolls produced right now) is still a way for the line to be on the spotlight again.

This is a fashionista set with an 80s theme. They should have left the Rockers name off and just made it another pop star line. The doll itself seems too simple. It doesn't feel very Barbie and the Rockers to me, but I'm biased because the dancing Rockers dolls were my first Barbies and I still have Dee Dee, Ken, and the regular repro.

Anyway, I wanted to tell you that the original barbie and the rockers doll is so awesome and you really need to get her. I don't have the doll anymore but I do still have the clothes which my daughter and I play with. But her hair and face were amazing. I love how all of the old dolls had earrings and matching makeup and rings. The original barbie and the rockers doll had the coolest make up ever! This doll is ok but there is just no comparison.

They have been making a mess with the Fashionistas dolls for a while. Everytime I buy a Fashionsta, I get my scissors ready to fix their hair. I loved Barbie and the Rockers in the 80's. I had Barbie, Derek (my favorite Ken of all times)and the black doll. I also had the 2nd Barbie and the Rockers,the one with the big bangs, straight mullet who could twist her waist.

I am team retro. I miss the face mold and body. I like the clothing options of the new one. Not really liking the hair on the new one. It's like they just wanted to neon everything.

Great review. It's sad to see how the quality has deteriorated through the years. Mattel used to have so much pride with their Barbie line. Now that the Rockers line has come back, Hasbro should bring back a high quality Jem and the Holograms line...maybe that would make Mattel start to take notice, and focus on bringing the pride back to Barbie.

Jay! The best things about this doll are some of her accessories and the box 😑. I'm not really a fan of this face mold for Barbie cuz as u said at this point she looks like any other fashionista doll.Her hair is a mess, if this is Barbie I wish they kept her hair blonde and maybe dyed the ends pink or given her pink streaks. I do prefer vintage.Now, when you said Carlyle designed this...i think my jaw dropped...No shade to him, as he creates, IMO, the best Barbies ever, it is a reflection of Mattel and their willingness to muddy what was such a popular line of Barbies. I am 100 on if they had allocated more resources to this line and Carlyle did what he fully is capable of...these dolls would be a SMASH and really could have revitalized Barbie.I actually do like the Millie sculpt, however, they should have made her more outlandish with her make-up. A big pink star of a lightning bolt would have been super cute.The clothes are...well...i did MUCH prefer the lepored print look and actually gave a hmmm on that look.Over all 1 out of 10, for me...5 average Mattel doll.Disappointed that such an iconic line was really just, frankly, phoned in...

P.S. Barbie's clothes from the '80's were some of the best quality ever made. The original 1980's Rocker clothes were super hip for the time and beautifully made and highly accessorized. Probably too cost prohibitive to replicate that today... but yeah I still the like the concept of re-introducing this line....Super excited!

I agree, the packaging is fun and the boxes/packaging lately has been VERY ho/hum. I like the play functionality of the interchangeable clothes and them marketing part of it as '' here's all these different outfits you can make '' although arguably you can do that with any fashion doll that comes with extra clothes. I think the first tube dress is prettiest but it really is a shame it's not an all over print. the two tiered silvery skirt looks like someone was going for an 80's silhouette but didn't quite understand how to make it work. For a '' rocker '' her makeup is woefully understated. I understand the fashionistas are based in reality but I mean this is a fantasy and they phoned it in. The hair looks really sad. I'm not expecting 80's parody huge perm but I mean- nah, y'know what I kinda am. This hair should have been fluffy. The switch top is cool, the earrings are cool, i even like the green grid pants. There are some fun pieces but meh, this doll looks like an after thought. Good doll for customizers I think.

Hey Jay I am team retro. Mostly because the Retro and dolls from the 80's and 90's are better quality even the clothes from that time were AMAZING quality. With the new doll the hair could definitely use some work. Like big curls or short and funky and they could have at least used a made to move Body. I have actually stopped buying the more modern barbies except for the holiday ones. I really wish Mattel would bring back the quality of the most iconic collectible doll in the world. Lol

That's a shame about the hair. You know looking at the doll you can choose whether you want it based on her look, clothes, etc., but you can't really tell in the packaging how awful that hair is and that is shady!

Ok. I have to give my opinion here. I think too many Barbies are being remade, and I'm sorry, But they will never be as good as the 80 and 90 dolls. I hate when they do this, they must Have run out of fresh ideas. I just don't think they need remakes, just but the 80s version, and make her over by using the newer styles. That's how I feel, it's only my opinion, we all have our views.

I'm Sorry but I just don't like this at all. It would have been much better if they just came out with another rock star type line and left the Rockers alone. I much Prefer the Original Barbie and The Rockers, and The Barbie and the Sensations Lines. It didn't need to be messed with, or reinterpreted but that's just my opinion. Not everything needs to be rebooted or redone . Some things are just as great as they always were..but again, my opinion.

I would rebody her on an Made to Move body, get rid of that fingerless glove.

I have all the original Barbie and the Rockers dolls. Come to this modern take, I'm gonna be honest too about the new one. I don't like it. The clothes and everything of this doll are TOO COSTUME LOOK. The clothes look like cheap Halloween costume. Also the doll itself is even more worse. The doll and everything about it are already been seen before.The only thing that I like the modern version is the box. But everything is just awful. I didn't grow up in the 80's but I prefer the original retro ones. I only like from the new Barbie and the Rockers line is the one w/ the Afro that comes the drum set. I guess we expect more fr. Carlyle Nuera who is supposed to be better Barbie designer given Barbie fans/collectors what they want. But this one he failed and tortured Barbie and the Rockers. I'm sorry about my opinion on this to act all very critical like the judges on Project Runway about the clothes, but the new version is just terrible. Hope there will be more better new versions of this line.
