It’s unfortunate that we had to tear down a brand new pair of shell cordovan boots. But with the toe issues I didn’t see another option.

I know the customer wanted something different and that's great. I also understand that Steve talked to the retailer and came to an arrangement. Steve did an amazing job, way better than the original! That said, Alden should not be getting away with this shoddy quality control!!!

It's unbelievable that Alden has the nerve to put out an $800+ boot in that condition. A paper heel too! People need to start returning shoes that have QC issues like this. If people accept mediocre quality they will continue to get it. Steve, beautiful work as always.

One of the things I miss very much about living in Falls Church, VA is having Betos Leather Works repair my shoes. Steve is awesome at his craft and even more so he’s an interesting and nice person who taught me a lot about how to keep my shoes lasting. You don’t find places like this in the burbs. Am glad he has his own KZfaq channel. Kudos Steve!

Steve, I get such a strong sense of deja vu when I watch you, you share so many skills and techniques with my farrier and the way he used to shoe my horse. The way you hold the shoe but keep your fingers out of the way as you tap in the nails, just as a farrier cups the hoof as he nails on the shoe. And fitting the French Tips, the way you offer them up to the shoe and check for fit on the outside edge with your thumb, it’s uncannily similar to the way a farrier assesses the fit of a shoe on the hoof. Right down to the way you unconsciously sweep a thumb across to check for smoothness after completing the nails. Really interesting! Love your work!

I think we love hammer time because it just a catchy phrase (kinda of like "Let's continue"). It also goes into the work you put into everything you do: calling the manufacturer and talking about what needs to be done for the customer; not everyone does this. #nicerepair #hammertime

Fantastic job and upgrade. Perhaps the retailer returned money to the customer which was then put toward the repair you performed? Letting a pair of shell cordovans leave the factory with any kind of flaw is a huge mistake by Alden. Seems like everyone is happy now.

I loved the closeup shots of you sewing the welt. I never realized it but the jerk needle looks like a very pointy small crochet hook. I could have spent 30 minutes watching you sew the entire welt. It fascinates me. I would also love to learn more about how you do the stamping on the sole. Oh, and NO WAY you stop Hammer Time! 😊 It’s a Bedo’s tradition! (Great slo-mo shot) You love to joke with us and I love your sense of humor. You are a true artist, and a craftsman with excellent ethics. As always a beautiful end result. ❤️👍

Pretty sure it’s leather board, not fiber board. I love Alden. I love so much about them. They do have quality control issues over the last several years though. Usually with the stitching in the soles. Also, I really do wish they would go back to full leather heel stacks and mid soles. They are my favorite shoe maker still and love their lasts and styling and overall quality of build and materials. They just need better QC before the shoes leave the factory.

If you can find that pre-taped plastic without the edge-lock you might find it works better at not marring the surface of the boot. Edge-lock is an oil based barrier on the tape to prevent bleed through from paint but I remember that on the blue tennis shoes you spiffed up a while back that there was a line visible in the uppers from the tape. I believe it was from the "edge-lock" technology on that painter's tape. 3M does make a blue painter's tape that does not have the edge-lock technology but not sure if you can get it with the plastic attached.
