Make sure air compressor governor is adjusted so that there is 125# at the tire pressure regulator. 17.5s are very heat sensitive....underinflated will flex sidewalls and build a lot of heat. Carry at least 2 mounted spares. They may be more available today than they were a few years ago. Keep in mind that the superload trailers use them by the dozens...some of those trucking companies buy them by the container full. General and Kumho tires will outlast the Michelins. Normal highway vibrations tend to loosen the tire valve connections....soap and water test regularly. The main heat source that will give the tires grief...the trailer brakes...very little clearance between the wheels and brake drums. Those ramps are a huge liability for loading/unloading vehicles....slightest crack or flaw can be quick failure.

Those are some serious golden nuggets there, thank you

I've driven 20 minutes before with the air system light on! Cool trailer! I pull a 48' spread axle Reitnouer, with a lift axle, the air bag drop and pressure gauge. We have the strobe lights, but never use them. We never haul any oversize loads! The trucking company that I drive for use to have 2 53' step decks with the sliding axle. But the boss got rid of them. Just remember if hauling into Florida, make sure that sliding axle is in the tandem position. I didn't know about the length law from kingpin back to that last axle and got a overlength ticket. Happy truckin, RH

I was empty and forgot the kingpin law. Pulls me at the station. Says your axel is 8” to far I say can I fix real quick. Nice as can be she says sure. I fix it turn around and here you go a $100 ticket. Can’t stand the dot bs to make revenue. I take care of my rig. I can see pulling over Zimbabwe who hasn’t done a pre trip in 12 months and his trucks shows it but damn giving a ticket for a simple fix when everything else truck and trailer perfect.

I’m sure the tires wear faster on a step deck because of the diameter different. They have to rotate more to equal the same distance as the tractor tires. I new to trucking but I like the versatility of a step deck. And yes agree with the ease of getting on and off the trailer. Sweeeet trailer.

Might want to checkout availability of the 17's. Might be good to carry one or two with you just in case the truck stop can't get one til 3 days from when you need it. Plus that gives you the opportunity to shop around for the best price of a possibly non-common tire. Beautiful trailer!

Fantastic! Thank you. Yes I have heard the same, that’s why the tire inflation system was extremely important to me to make sure I don’t have a blow out and get max life. I wanted that extra height though, it’s really not that big of a difference in the long run monetarily.

Cool trailer enjoy, I pull a bigger buba 53’. It was a 5 axle flat bed all deck out. 3 axles on the rear for a total of 12’ spread 72” between axles. 110” toward the front was a self steering lift axle, an another 110” towards the front again was another self steer. Both self steer were super single. The trailer had a reverseomatick put the it in reverse and wait 30 seconds for the self steers to lift. After 8 forward revolution the would self lower.

@@DrivenTrucking you can do 110k with what you havrle and no problem with it at all. I did 180k with my old 9300 cornbinder 425 Detroit 10 speed. Dont look at the weight, it is all about the axles. But I know what you mean and understand your concern. Your empty weight nnow is about 31k with full tanks and equipment. A perfect weight that will not give you concern is about 60k payload. Your truck will not have a problem with it and it will be easiely axled at 18k steers, 44k drives and 44k trailer. Wich is legal everywhere with permit. Except in Kentucky where they limit a tandem to 40k. Dont think heavy though. Just think oversized. It is way lighter just cumbersome. Such as AC units out of Western Atkansas. But those usually go 10ft wide to NYC. I loved those loads. All pay about $4k plus tolls. (GW $350.00 and can only cross at 9pm escorted with the Paisans of NYC that know their stuff.) The 30×30's will usually be furnished for you. 225lbs per tarp. I still feel those.

Just curious: Tires regulate for constant pressure - What happens when you have 60k lbs, the tire pressure is set to 100psi, but with 60k on them this will deform the tire greater. Because of the deformation more heat builds up, more heat= more pressure, more pressure=system letting air out, System letting air out= more deformation, more deformation= more heat etc. until tire fire or blowout. I'm sure they though of this, but I'm curious on how they handle it.

Nice looking step deck. However, I don't really want to rain on your parade but I hope you are not anticipating you can haul 100,000# load on that trailer. For that kind of weight you'll have to put out more than 65G's for a trailer that will handle 100,000# load. That and another tractor that is spec'd for that kind of weight pull. However, you will be able to do most over size in height load and mostly with out a permit. Good luck on your new path. Stay safe out there and remember, secure the load as though your family is riding in front, on the side and behind and you'll always keep it safe.....

Thank you! No I don’t plan on hauling 100,000 pounds, the trailer is just rated for it. By tractor most likely couldn’t handle it and I wouldn’t want it to be able to handle it anyway. I’m only looking for OD not necessarily heavy. Be safe as well.

Damn didn't realize how much they were now. A few years back we bought a 7 year old Landoll for 30,000 and at the time new was about 100,000. I'd hate to see the price of a new Landoll in 2019. Our Landoll is heavy as shit though, it's just over 20,000. Hydralic dock levelers don't help, but they sure are handy

Beautiful new trailer !! This will provide more options to load, and you can still do reg flat bed freight too. Hopefully that high $$ over height and wide, and rolling stock too ! Probably a little learning curve...but you'll get it. Looking forward to learning with you !

tires are designed to start at spec cold pressure and have an increase when hot. Letting pressure out so a hot tire has cold pressure that doesnt sound right. Sweet trailer tho
@DrivenTrucking
@DrivenTrucking 5 жыл бұрын
You’re probably right, I should’ve just said it keeps the tire pressure constant by inflating and deflating. 🤷🏼‍♂️ thank you!
@Digger207
@Digger207 4 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenTrucking you were right about the tire inflation it does deflate the tires when hot but not alot... the system basically keeps your tires finely tuned on air pressure to decrease tire wear and increase fuel mileage. I'm actually a hendrickson employee and have been helping build those suspensions for the last 9 years lol.

I thought a drop deck was a trailer that drops on the ground. When I hauled crushed cars I always called my trailer a step deck. Just like I called a dummy axle a ‘tag axle’. Who knows though?
