Georgia football coach Kirby Smart addressed reporters at SEC Media Days on Tuesday -- but why wasn't he asked about the repeated driving issues of Georgia players while the cameras were on him?
On this episode of Kings of the North, Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis discuss the way Georgia football should be viewed for now -- as a rogue program.
The guys cover what Smart did say to reporters about driving problems when the cameras weren't on, the baseline of Georgia driving arrests in the last year-and-a-half, the way the media has handled Georgia's problems (often poorly) and why Smart should be compared to Urban Meyer and not Nick Saban.
Then they decide what Smart should do to try to fix the issue and how media and fans should view Georgia until this gets better.
There's also some talk of why Smart isn't at Nick Saban's level, why LSU's Brian Kelly wants to play in Ireland, and what SEC commissioner Greg Sankey thinks about the future of college football.
Thanks for joining Kings of the North.

I went from skeptical of this show idea to dying for a new episode over the weekend. Ready for 5 days a week shows.

One of the major differences between the Urban Meyer thing and what's going on with Georgia lies with the media. Back then the sports media wasn't so entrenched and in bed with college football. The fact that ESPN is basically a partner of the SEC ensures that they're NEVER going to go 100% in an investigative story that will cause problems for an SEC school. Hell, I bet if a reporter WANTED to ask a question regarding the reckless driving during the on camera portion he/she would be told to cram it or you'll never get top level access again. The conversation about the culture at Georgia in terms of accountability was a very good one. At the end of the day these players are still pretty much kids. Yeah, the money aspect makes them employees but there's also things like morals clauses and an expectation that you'll live up to a certain code of conduct. I daresay if things become professionalized there will HAVE to be a mechanism that takes suspensions and such out of the hand of coaches and make it a conference ruling rather than something that can be covered up/handled in house.

This is completely untrue. They let anyone into SEC media days that has a podcast. Kirby was asked about scheduling Auburn for homecoming for goodness sakes. He got asked the question and he responded to it. The problem with media these days is instead of reporting the news they want to make the news. He's been asked about this stuff all the time. They have done everything they can to educate these kids about driving and making the right decisions. Two of these kids were racing. Another though, turned on a one way street going the wrong way in Athens. Does anyone want to throw that kid off the team for something almost everyone does by mistake at some point in their life? The 27 traffic violation stuff is not good reporting unless they go into detail what those were. They needed to take out the ones that actually were not serious and just the norm that soccer moms get from time to time. But that doesn't make a good story.

How about we question why UGA is the only team under the spotlight and all the other schools where such issues are swept under the rug by the "Good ole boy" network and we are never made aware of it publically. That is where the real story is. You have a case where players are actually being held accountable for their actions by the police and legal system but the coach is blamed and then everywhere else players never face consequences. This is a case of bandwagon journalism and not real journalism that ask the questions that should be asked.

Barnet shoals road where the accident happened is a 4 lane road 2 lanes on each side, and a center median lane speed limit is 45 not 40. South Barnet shoals Road is a 2 lane road one on each side, not where this happened.. not defending what happened but you should fact check a little better. also his interview asking about this issue was covered by espn so to say there covering it up is a stretch.

Thanks for the clarification on where the accident took place. I don't think either Philly Billy or French Vanilli were saying ESPN covered it up. Rather, they had two former players and Nick Saban asking the questions and none of them are journalists. Great comment, though.

As long as espin owns the sec, sec faults always have been, and always will be covered up and minimized by espin. Thats what they do attack anyone outside sec, and covered up any issue with their own properties. I don't understand why that is not a gigantic issue all by itself. It certainly should be every year until espin permanently change their ways.

Kirby Smart shouldn't lose his job over this, but he should be held to account. And fan-based organizations with a name with any variation of the word "Dawg" in it should be more invested in making sure that their program is neing held accountable for the actions of the players and coaches. Glad to see that someone has the huevos to call them out. Eric in Findlay

How should he be held to account? The facts are he's punishing these guys. Facts are other teams have had the same thing happen with their players. Facts: He's the only one that has kicked someone off the team for it. Facts: As far as he knows, he runs the only program that has a collective not give the players the full money agreed to due to this kind of conduct. What would you like to see done? If you want to go after someone, go after Mike Gundy. He basically told you he's not really gonna do much about it.

Speeding is not what got two people killed - the problem was one of them was drunk. DUI was the determining factor in taking speeding from bad decision to deadly decision. I'd wager most programs had multiple players that drove 20 miles over the speed limit *today* .

Looking forward to the Alabama episode. As a Nebraska fan living in Alabama, I cannot help but see the signs if a similar storm that my beloved Huskers went through brewing over the Tuscaloosa. Tom Osborne leaving, then a carousel of coaching hires and fires, including 2 firings after 9 win seasons. I wonder if expectations are so high for the Alabama fans that they dont tolerate any drop-off and end up making things worse.

Yes an honest discussion would be how uga’s driving issues compares to similar schools around the country. That way we know if it’s a problem with one school or with young adults in general. Especially in this NIL era.

Heres a question that could be an interesting conversation for y'all. Obviously the South can cram it, but if you could name one school in the South that you'd label as an Honorary Northern Team, who'd you pick?
