Brandon and I had some free time and wanted to go truck shopping and specifically, look at the 2018 F-550 dump trucks. There is a dealer about 5 minutes down the road from both of us, and since we got done mowing some grass early, we had to go check them out.
Most of you guys have been keeping up on Brandon's journey with it being his first year in business and all the new things he's putting together. If you've watched our other truck videos, you guys know Brandon currently has a 2014 Chevy 1500, which is a sweet ride.
Brandon's at the point now where he's really considering upgrading to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, and or upgrading to a dump truck. We went to our local dealer, got a demo, and had to do a walk around and share this one with you guys.
Brandon was actually eye balling this one all summer, and I finally said enough is enough. Let's rip up there, do a test drive and walk around, and go check it out. This one retailed for almost $72K, but with rebates and discounts it's sitting right at $66K, not too bad for what it is.
The final question we had was, should Brandon go with a F-550 Dump truck like so, or go with an F-250/350 and a dump trailer setup. Again, Brandon does landscaping, so he's also evaluating that diesel upgrade. What do you guys feel is the best choice? Leave us a comment down below!
As always, if you guys have ideas or topics for future Truck Talk Tuesday episodes, let us know! Now that we have a little bit more time, we can weigh in and do a few more TTT videos through fall and winter!

f250 or f350 with dump trailer is the way to go in my opinion. Dump trailer come in all size and there lower to ground to load material and they come in hand as equipment trailer because the dump trailer comes with heavy duty ramps to haul around a skid steer and heavy equipment.

I personally would chose the dump truck. With a dump truck you have room to grow. Not saying you can’t with the 350. With a dump truck you can fit into tighter areas. Also with the dump truck you can get a dump trailer and buy a bobcat. Load the bob cat up on the dump trailer while loading gravel in the truck bed. Like I was saying. Just plenty of room to grow

Brian have him look in to getting a goose neck dump trailer they handle and pull so much better and u can get them in tighter spots because the pivot point is further forward and also with the hitch in the bed it putts the load on the truck further forward and the suspension isnt straining as much eather

Great conversation. I struggle with this as well. For now went with dump trailer. $6600 and I can pull when I need it. Actually have a regular flatbed on my 3/4 ton. So I pull my dump trailer with it for landscaping. Have 2 places to load items. Blocks or materials on the truck, mulch or rock on the trailer. Also something I learned recently. Cab and chassis Ford's are detuned from the a standard f350 with the 6.7 . Nice truck though!

I own a dump truck and would recommend an F250 or 350 with a dump trailer. As everyone else has pointed out, you can haul a much larger capacity with the trailer, disconnect it when not needed, and you will spend far less. If you need the towing capacity of the 550 well then you can justify it.

Just get a 1-Ton Pick up with long box, diesel. You can always decide if you want a dually or not. As for brand go look at all of them and choose the one you like best that fits you the most, after all it's pretty much your office.

Both setups are beneficial. The dump truck, like you said, is pretty much dedicated and the truck and trailer setup can be used for both personal and work. Depending on what trim level 250 or 350 you get with the dump trailer, the cost would be about the same, in my opinion

Yes they are detuned I believe just on the horsepower side. I have 3 F450's and one F350 srw I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. I don't buy them for speed when I am pulling a trailer around all over the place. All of them have the 4:10 gears plenty of torque + plow package which you will want to get if you are the type that likes to plow. Also the F450's have better turning radius vs. the f250's-350's + much bigger and stronger front axles that own the road rather than politely roll along. lastly, I have heard nothing but great things about the new super duty trucks regardless of what one you choose from people that have had the pre 2017 models vs the 2017+ models FYI.

If you’re mowing doing clean ups etc get the 350 and dump trailer, it will do you well and give you room to grow. If you’re doing hardscaping or delivering a lot of materials get the 550. You’ll never get close to gvwr on the 550 with grass or leaves or brush but it’s easy to overload anything smaller if you’re hauling 3/8” gravel or stone dust.

The F550 is a beast of work truck! On the upside they're super maneuverable over a pickup and dump trailer. Down side would be the higher overhead, with bigger purchase price and more insurance cost ect. Also keep in mind the DOT regulations which can be a real hassle. At the end of the day you could adapt to either but I ❤ my F550

I just custom built a 19 f350 with a 9 foot bed for my job municipality is what I am in. You can get rid of that backpack and put a longer dump on. All depends on the wheel base you want we need a small truck as we have small and tight access rds we get in to. Hopefully will have the truck first week in dec. no plow but it has the prep package on it.

I bought a new Ram 2500 two years ago. I went with the gas engine mostly because I couldn't afford the diesel. And in those two years I never felt like I needed the upgrade. Today's gas engines are impressive. Granted my trailer loaded with both mowers can't be more than 6k. And I put a dump insert on the truck, puts up two yards of top soil no problem. 5k ish. So it depend what you use it for. If you do a lot of hardscaping you probably need a bigger dump trailer. Easier to load too.

I have been milling over the same thing lately. I have a 1500 chevy (that probably cant pull as much as Brandon's) and there isnt a whole lot i can really do with it. I've been looking at some used dump trucks and have seen some nice deals but 99% of them are 2 wheel drive. I dont want to get something that is liable to get me stuck some day, but then again I may get lucky and never get (badly) stuck with it. I have thought about getting a used 3/4 ton or a 1 ton and a dump trailer as well but thats more expense than i can afford as well. My biggest dilemma is that im just now honestly breaking even with my mowing business. this is my second year so im doing ok in that regard considering some people dont break even till their 5 year or so. I want to expand my business with the potential to plow snow and haul gravel and dirt ect as well as use the dump trailer/truck for my own job use. I really dont want to go into debt again but as they say, gotta spend money to make money right? Right...? I dont know its driving me crazy lol. One thing Brandon might consider is a roll off dump trailer with a flat bed. He could potentially do away with his utility trailer and just use the one trailer or at least use it for heavy equipment. I would be interested in one to haul like i said but also as a potential dumpster rental side hustle.

Absolutely gorgeous truck. That being said, he should go with a galvanized bed or an aluminum bed if he’s going to want it for a long time. Those steel beds rust so quickly and look bad after one year of use. I know the aluminum beds probably don’t hold as much but they make a lot of sense!

Again, a grain of salt, go with the 250/350 with dump attachment. Keep the Chevy too!! This way you can have 2 everyday drivers, still be able to haul a ton, and even go with a dump trailer too for extra measure. If you're planning on starting to mow more, then add that gate attachment that the guy had at the GIE to the Chevy, and you'll have a mowing/landscape truck, and the 250/350 with the dump attachment for plow and pavers and so on.... Good luck either way, God bless you guys, and Greetings from Jersey buds!!!!!!

We run F250 single cab trucks with optional 6000lb fgvwr for carrying heavy plows. We run 6.2L gas engines too. We have two dump trailer and I'm not sure I'd ever consider a dump truck. Like others said, you can still have a normal truck at the end of the day. The only way a dump truck would be better is if you need the dump box while pulling your mowing trailer daily for clippings etc. Good luck with your choice!

Our company has a F550 Crew Cab with a dump body. I am not sure the exact dimensions of the body but it will hold about 8-10 yards of mulch with no problem. I wish ours had some type of storage like this one to hold tools. It has a hassle to move to climb into the body to get be able to dump material. We also have a dump trailer but I find the truck to be more convenient. Our dump site can be tight at times and having to maneuver a trailer can be a pain.

Dump truck would be an awesome buy, but something to consider that I have had to put up with is we're you live. I run my own construction business and tow a 14' enclosed trailer with my F150. I thought about getting a van and have my truck but just starting out was not finicially smart to have two insurance payments and maintenance for two vehicles. Another thing to consider is your town/ county ordinances about commercial vehicles being parked at home. I got a notice saying I can't park my trailer in front of my house and had to start parking it off the side in the lawn. (I live on a dead end street) Also part of the code it "no commercial vehicle with decal or lettering", so a dump truck with decals would get you a hefty fine but a trailer can as well, but trailer can be stored out of the way or in a garage easier than a dump. My truck is also my personal go out with friends. If I had a van only, well, I'll always have my tools at least.

Was going to add that if it were me and I was a solo operation I'd go for a 250/350 pick up a dump bed insert and a dump trailer. I don't necessarily know if I'd buy a diesel. Our 2016 F250 has a 6.2L and averages around 8'ish mpg towing/plowing and I hear the diesels aren't much better. I'd also opt for 430 gears with a gasser.
@jandblawncare8570

You have to weigh the thought of what your using it for. We have had an 06 F250 since new and do a lot of mowing and we bag everything so we get a lot of grass clippings and do a lot of leaves in the fall. We added a dump bed insert for it years ago and what a time saver dumping off grass and leaves, a dump trailer will do that and hold a lot more material but had I gone the dump trailer way I'd need another truck to tow our enclosed trailer with all the tools/mowers or be stuck at the dump site trying to rake/blow out all the grass/leaves from a regular truck bed. Even that dump bed insert holds 4-5 yards of mulch/grass with side boards and twice as much with our leaf box on it. Last year we bought a 2017 F350 1 ton dump with a 10 or 11ft bed and obviously it holds a lot more than a dump bed insert does but we can hold a day or two grass and carry about 8-9 yards of mulch a time so it saves us on dump fees, labor, fuel etc. We also do a lot of plowing and often need to haul snow from sites and was sick of subbing out dump trucks. We outfitted it with a Fisher 9.6 XV2 and what a tank! We opted for just a gas 6.2L with 430 gears and pulls anything behind it just fine. It's a tough call, unfortunately in this business we need several large pieces of equipment to run efficiently.

Hey, I just remembered looking into Bwise trailers recently. Their Ultimate Dump Trailer is pretty BADA$$ compared to a lot of them if you go that route. Plus, it might be able to replace your utility trailer with it's unique ramp. I believe it's like $15k though. But it would possibly be the only trailer you'd need for years.

With an f250 normal truck; in the future if you buy toys or a camper, you can haul it with a comfort truck vs a dump truck especially on trips. A second vehicle probably costs more than a second trailer, especially since both will need weighted tags and major repairs vs a lifetime trailer tag and pretty much minor repairs. Biggest thing is having a bigger trailer always comes in handy in this industry. You could probably use a 350 with a 16' as well. You might can rent your dump trailer out for demo jobs as well.

I think it’s overkill man. You would be better off with a 250 or 350 with a nice dump trailer. Plus you can use a 250 or 350 for regular tasks as well

its not just the size of the dump bed, running a dump trailer over a dump truck, you have to consider that your dumping area length is much longer because the dumping height on the trailer is lower, you have more tires to replace, another mechanism to maintain, something else to pay taxes and registration on and its nowhere near as maneuverable. I almost bought a dump trailer also but considering everything just bought a dump truck and I daily it no problem too. Also, if you need more material than that delivered, just have someone else deliver it. I have a 10 yard body measured water level on one of my trucks and I still call other people to deliver material occasionally

My dad always says you can't have a big enough truck or TRAILER. Trust me, get the truck and dump trailer and you will find it's more useful having a bigger bed for waste. I have a 10' dump trailer and regret not getting started least a 12. Keep the utility if you're still doing lawns. You can haul equipment with either and it's a pain in the arse to load unload without a proper ramp. Also, you get the dump truck and if you feel it up during a busy time and don't have time to unload, you've got to haul the extra weight everywhere which means more wear and fuel.

If your looking for a medium duty work truck that has a dump box or Maybe you don't even want a dump box but if you do I would go for a f-450 you get the heavy duty shocks and you get a little smaller truck body than even the f-550.

That a contractor truck. Like concrete guy or commercial plowing. Get a landscape dump or big dump trailer. That’s gonna run $2000 month plus def fluid.

If you're spending 60k on a truck spend a little more and get something you'll love and will make you the most money. We just purchased a '19 f550 6.7 chassis cab this spring and put on a custom aluminum split dump. Grand total was 77k and we can haul up to 18 yards of mulch, and do 2 deliveries at once. I'm not saying you need a split dump, as we mainly do mulch deliveries and installs, but you will be limited with that 9' low sided monroe dump.

If you are looking to buy a new dump truck Chevy is coming out with their new 4500, 5500, and the 6500. I would test drive both before you buy. I have a dump trailer. If you buy one I would deffiniatly go with a PJ dump trailer. I've had one for 3 years now and no problems at all.

My old company truck was a 2011 F450 Dump truck 6.7L Powerstroke I wasn't impressed with it.. I rarely hauled anything and only towed skid steers occasionally.. But it just seemed like it lacked the power of a Duramax or Cummins .. Then at around 87k miles it blew up.. I was pretty much the only person that drove the truck and I took care of it because it was a nice truck and it was serviced according to a strict schedule.. They gave me a new truck a 2016 F250 lariat with the 6.2L Gas engine and it seems to have decent power.. * I should also mention that I'm not a fan of any particular manufacturer I like pretty much all trucks so I'm pretty fair when I tell people about them..

I’ve had a chance to use a new f550 with a dump bed. They’re okay, but I prefer the 94’ gmc 3500 dump bed. The only things the f550 had going for it was Bluetooth radio and it was 10+years newer.

Get the F250 in the blue jean blue with the 7x16 dump trailer. It is better financially because then you don't have to buy two vechicles, one being the dump and the other being your personal.

Its actually worse. Putting miles on ur work truck for personal? Not smart. A truck is meant for work. The more personal miles u put, the more it has a chance of breaking down and for the wrong reasons.

I agree with others who say go with a truck and a trailer set-up. Problem with the trailer set up you have extra maintenance. Those trailers break down and need constant attention.

Have a 16ft dump. I love if but hydros are slow and really only holds 5yrd before the tires start to pinch. Had a lol over 5 yards of 3/4 inch stone on and had to shovel off since the hydros couldn't lift. For $8500 I figured it could lift and hold more than 5 yards

First time watcher here. What are going to be hauling? Gravel, trees, grass? That 550 will haul anything u can put in it and pull any trailer u want to put behind it. That being said , do you need that much truck? My dad just bought a used f350 with the v10 and put a 12ft dump box on it. He has been hauling gravel and pulls a 10ft dump trailer. He hauls about 3 to 4 yards of gravel in each. The 12ft box has enough room to haul more but he would be really over loading the truck. You can get used box trucks fairly cheap . Take the box off and put a dump box on it. I think my dad paid a round 7000 for the truck and then had to find the dump box. He is cheap so he wanted a used one to save money. If he would have gone with a new box he would have gotten a smaller one.

I’ve been doing landscaping for years. Fixed dump bed trucks are stupid. You have to lift debris so high in the air and it’s a back injury waiting to happen. Especially if your edging flower beds and have grass clumps to get rid of it’s impossible to put in there. Definitely get a F250 and a dump trailer. Haul so much more and safer to load. I got that setup and it’s great! Plus it’s a personal truck when I want it to be. If you do F550, look at a switch n go. Good luck.

Pickup and dump trailer is so much more versatile for everyday use and landscaping. Unless you have daily work for a f550 dump truck I’d hold out on that. With the 550 you get into dot numbers, and depending on state law needing a cdl to tow anything behind it.
@matthewwright2847
@matthewwright2847 5 жыл бұрын
DOT numbers are no big deal, just go online and apply for one, they are free. Also, you need a cdl class A when trailering any weight over 10,001 lbs. Per federal regulations.

I would go with a 250 or 350 with dump trailer for now so it can be a daily driver, then once you can afford a second vehicle for your business, get thew dump truck, because that has its uses too. Like if you want to bring a skid steer to a job and have something to haul the material away with too. Just my thoughts, can't go wrong wither way!

Two more reason for a trailer are you don't have you're extra back seat while using the dump truck for business or people and you've got to either have both trucks stocked with multiple sets of tools or constantly transfer tools between and we all know how well that works...

Get the trailer, if the truck goes down, you are out of commission. With the trailer you have it no matter what truck you are running. It keeps you more flexable.

Sorry for all the comments and if I'm wrong about certain stuff, please let me know as I'm still very new to this and the construction industry. I heard you mention that it's easier unloading a dump truck since there's not as much setting up. I don't know how the trucks work, but will you be getting the auto mesh tarp cover and a hydraulic rear barn/dump door? If so, I can see that, if not youre still getting out to unroll and open the doors right? I do like the controller being in the truck though. I've never used a dump truck, so I can only go by the advantages of the trailer, but I'm sure there are good things about them as well. Just giving my multiple cents! 😁😉

Here in California, every city has a commercial department police officer. I have a gmc 3500 diesel 12foot stake bed . Let me tell you....I have gotten pulled over by every city I drive thru. Beverly hills 2 times, Santa Monica 3 times, Culver city 8 times, and Inglewood 1 time . Plus c.h.p. has random checkpoints all over los Angeles . The only reason I haven't gotten a truck with a trailer is because parking here is hard to find and traffic is a nightmare. If it wasnt for those 2 reasons...I would just buy a truck with a trailer.

Check your states weight restrictions before you buy a 550, it can restrict you're towing capacity to where you would be able to tow more with a 2500 or 3500 if you don't have a CDL. If Brandon is running a one truck operation for sure go with the dump trailer, that's alo't of money to have wrapped up in one piece of equipment!!

I’d go with a 450 or better. The main reason I’d go with a 450 over a 350 dually is the wide track front axle. You’ll get a much better turning radius. Also I’d go with something that has a larger cab. I’d get the at least the cab and a half. This way if you need to you can cram someone into the back seat. It would let you run a larger crew if needed. And not have to worry about a 2nd vehicle.

The problem with simply going with a 250 or 350 is that you miss the versatility of having a dump truck. When you are working by yourself, a dump body on a truck allows you to pull a trailer with your equipment, mowers or a skid loader to the job site at the same time you bring your materials. With a dump trailer, it is going to take at least two trips, thereby negating the time savings of a dump trailer over your utility trailer.

If you are doing a lot of landscaping or Hardscaping and you are NOT snowplowing with this Dump Truck then I would buy it for sure. Remember you will have an increase in insurance cuz it is a Dump Truck and theres more liability carrying debris. I snow plowed with my F450 Dump and within 4 seasons the box was rotted by the salt. I then went back to a Chevy HD2500 Ex Cab with a Dump Trailer and its a great combination. I disconnect the trailer and now I have a truck that I can use for a daily driver and can easily fit 5 people. Only down side to running only a Dump trailer is when your job calls for multiple types of material on site and you need to bring equipment like Skid Steer ect. If I were Brandon my main decision maker would depend on if he plans on using the Dump truck for snow plowing and if so I wouldn't buy it
