Brandon Routh opened up a ton during this episode of Inside Of You with Michael Rosenbaum on his thoughts and feelings about not being able to carry on the role of Superman as long as he would have hoped or imagined, shortly after Superman Returns. Here he talks about the expectations he had going into playing the Man of Steel and the disappointment and shock that came afterwards, not being able to carry on in Superman sequels.

Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs the World) joins us to share the thoughts and feelings on his role as Superman not living up to the expectations that he had hoped for. He opens up on the idea of one’s ego clouding self judgement and how it’s important to pursue balance in life. We talk about deflecting as a defense mechanism, overcoming things not within our control, and our purpose day to day.

...holy shit, you know I NEVER made that connection when I'd see these clips of his podcasts. :O OT: I think Superman Returns was a legit good superman film, no qualifications. I had more emotional investment in that story, and those characters, than anything in Man of Steel. Plus, I've never really understood the hate for it. "Lex Luthor hatches really stupid plan FOR THE MONEY!, while Clark spends most of the film dealing with personal/relationship drama" is a pretty stock standard Superman plot for a film. It actually showed him being a protector to the civilians, and set up the tension in HOW he would save the people from the disaster, one that he didn't cause by the way. It felt more like a Superman story/film to me, than the new DCEU stuff, by far.

'Superman Returns' is better than 'Man of Steel'. The big issues I had with Returns was they took on too much if they had left out the 'Son of' angle they would have been better off. Returns fits with the first 3 original movies (or 2 movies if you don't like 3 -4 is hated by everyone.) The action sequences in MoS were over done, they did not have to repeat the Superman II story line with Zod.

Brandon Routh wasn't the problem with Superman Returns at all. It's that they just did 1978's Superman beat-by-beat with flimsy new window dressing. Superman going away for a mission and then returning to Earth to realize a lot has changed and perhaps the world has moved on from him and his style of heroism is a fantastic story on its own but it was bogged down by the structure and outline of the 1978 film which prevented anything new or exciting from happening that would make the film its own. That's part of the reason why Zack Snyder went his own way with "Man of Steel" so that there wouldn't be anything from past films holding it back. Yet people complained that it wasn't enough like the 1978 movie. It's no wonder Superman hasn't gotten another solo film. People can't make up their minds over what the hell they want from his movies.

for the record, Rosenbaum is the BEST Lex!! he wasn't just an antagonist who was out there to wreak havoc on Superman but he was also charismatic, vulnerable & charming but cunning and cold at the same time... i was always at the edge of my seat, very scared of the 'potential' evil he can do yet he always held back... which made his Lex even more intimidating. he was sooo effective that i crushed on him instead of Welling who was a full course meal in the looks dept and the most endearing portrayal of Clark... and THAT takes only a very magnetic personification of Lex. Rosey, you did that! I hope you find another project that will be your next acting playground.

Routh was so good! he had a suit with weird cut (what were those .. Bikini briefs?) - cyan and maroon colours in some of the colour grading and the mish mash of Singer taking a 1970s-1980s film series and making a pseudo sequel, making Lois completely different, making the design language something out of the 40s to 60s then using 2006 technology like the computers and mobile phones. also made it nearly impossible to make a solid sequel because of the complexity of the Super-Kids (clarks son) and made menacing Kevin Spacey into a sometimes Campy Lex for no reason. he was vindicated by his reappearance as a version of Clark in the CW crossover event - brilliant and instantly conveyed the honour and sincerity of Superman when he stepped into his very first scene

@mcbrion1951

Routh was excellent. He had the nobility of Superman (one of Superman's PRIMARY traits, regardless of what others (who likely have only seen Superman in movies) think. That was what made him the greatest hero in the galaxy. His nobility. And Routh captured that aspect better than anyone, even Chris Reeves (when the first Superman movie came out, I was older than Reeves, (who was 24), so I saw him differently. He just happened to be the first Superman, and he was good-natured, but he wasn't what Superman was in the comic books. Close to it, but not as good as Routh was. Bosworth was the least believable "Lois Lane." Gene hackman as Luthor was just a caricature. Spacey was actually a better Luthor: malevolent and dangerous. By the way, Lex Luthor NEVER had a girlfriend in the comic books. EVER. So, that part was all made-up movie junk they threw in for comedic relief. Eisenberg was okay Luthor but would have been better had he been older. Watching him on the screen as Lex Luthor was like looking at a spoiled kid playing Lex Luthor, the evil mastermind. i don't even know why Eisenberg was auditioned. Probably because he'd played Mark Zuckerber, but as Luthor?? Not credible to anyone over 50 who'd read Superman for years, never mind someone approaching 70.

i personally love that film and think Routh was spectacular, i was never bored during it. i completely agree the casting of Lex and Lois was bad. I like Routh, but he wasn't a great actor back then. He was mimicking Reeve's performance, but there was nothing really distinguishable between his Clark and his Superman. Reeve sold the idea that they are two different people. And although Routh was around the same age as Reeve when they played the role, Routh doesn't come across as a bigger than life man. Even to this day, he has more of a teenage look. Yes, I know the script for SR wasn't great, but Routh didn't elevate anything he was in. Whereas Reeve did. Superman 4 was crap, but anytime Reeve was on film, you forget how crap the movie was. SR had horrible casting on almost all fronts, from Lois, Lex, to Perry White. Routh had no chemistry with Bosworth. The Superkid can work in the right context, but Bosworth doesn't sell the idea that she is a mom. So, I never believed her or their relationship. While Routh's Superman did feel like a continuation of Reeve, nothing else did.
