I’d recommend starting with the Mistborn trilogy and not the series mentioned in this video The Stormlight Archives (SA). While SA is undoubtedly his best work, Mistborn trilogy is the best intro to his work. Some characters are a bit rough around the edges but he really brings each book and the trilogy as a whole to such a satisfying ending that is worth the journey.

4:30 my boyfriend and I have discussed a bit about Stormlight and Wheel of Time. We both agree that Crossroads of Twilight is that book in the WoT series where nothing happens, it's a bit of a drag once you've caught onto that. We felt this way about Oathbringer as well. I stopped reading it once I had finished part one a year ago, he stopped half way through. The reason was that it felt like Crossroads. Its interesting that Sanderson mentions that each book feel like a trilogy unto itself because that's how I saw Oathbringer, having got myself back into it last month and finishing it a couple of weeks ago. The first half of the book felt to mean like number one, nothing really happens, it just feels like its setting things up. Part two and three sharing the rest of the book being where it's at. I've hassled my boyfriend about finishing it (he started WoK again). The action is amazing and Dalinar is an absolute Chad of a man. It's just getting to the good stuff. I dont know where I was going writing this. Any who, nice one getting the time to have a talk with Sanderson!! Can't wait for RoW

Got a little turned off by how separate each of the viewpoints are (and how they *will eventually relate and connect) for such a big chunk of the first book. @@ceve It's tough - Stormlight is arguably the stronger series, but it's harder to get into. Mistborn is far more accessible (Oceans 11 meets the Evil Immortal God-Emperor) but doesn't quite reach the same heights that Stormlight does. Hard to go wrong with Mistborn as your entry point, though. That's what I started with and I loved every minute of it.

I love Sanderson's books! I don't think that there's been one that I've started that I haven't binged through. I think my favorite part of his writing is that there is never a situation that happens "because plot". His characters are always deeply tied to the story and world; highly recommend his books.

You've really gotten good at interviewing! It seems so meta. There on display is your integrated understanding of the art of writing, the author, the book, the series, the genre. As you are conversing, we're flies on the wall, being let in on the ultimate conversation -- how lucky to be invited! You bring a quality of analysis, regard and curiosity that steps up the level of the author's answers. It invites the author to speak to the best in their readers. It makes us better readers, and better authors, by introducing questions far beyond the common and expected. What a service to both the authors and your audience. Please do interviews as often as possible!

I love how he talks about kind of "leading" the audience through the story. I can never anticipate how people will take a text or chapter or whatever bc I really have trouble imagining reading that story for the first time with just the information given, it's also why it's hard for me to tell a story in an understandable way (I mean when I'm talking to friends) bc I obviously know all the details but they don't and for me it's difficult to see it from their perspective who've never heard of it before. SO what I'm trying to say is that it takes some experience to anticipate the readers' reaction beforehand and I really appreciate him sharing his experience.

Some authors: Promise them a car, hint at a jet, give them a jet Togashi (level 01): Promise them a car, tell them how nice that car was which they never got Togashi (level 10): Promise them a car, hint at a jet, give them a paper bag Togashi (level 50): Promise them a car, hint at a battleship, give them something to cry about Togashi (level 99): Promise them a spaceship . . . skip town P.S.: Hunter x Hunter is great

I'm really enjoying these "guest lecturer" type videos! Those that have been following for a while already have a very good understanding of the theory laid out in earlier videos. Now we get application of those theories and how they consciously or unconsciously influence authors in their writing. A very clever a natural next step for the channel!

He can pack so much useful information into a 2 minute lecture than anyone I have ever known. Thanks for this. This was one of his best interviews. Fantastic questions.
