We take a look at the Barrett’s often forgotten about sibling, the prototype Barrett M82A2. It’s a super neat concept, and by far now the rarest gun that I own. Thanks to ‪@RockIslandAuctionCompany‬ for giving me the opportunity to snag this thing!

Helicopter is flying towards a squad that has a Barrett M82a1 realistically he's likely to have to go prone to accurately shoot at the helicopter but because the way the bipod is it would have trouble aiming up and would likely have to shoulder fire the gun which is not very practical. The military asking for a shoulder mounted one makes perfect sense and solves this problem perfectly.

Funny story about shooting 50cal in the air 🤣 I was in basic training at Ft.Benning, GA. And the day we were doing 50cal tripod training, we were given an ammo strip with 50 or so rounds. Waiting in line and hearing all the systems go off was just amazing. But they had alot of privates to get through in a short amount of time. So after an hour or so another 50. is delivered and me and some other privates are given the privilege to go help the DS's and carry it over there and with their help set it up. So after all is done I get to go first, DS shows us how to load it with my ammo strip and we are all huddled around. 👀👀👀👀👀 🤣 But anyways i get told to sit down and to go in bursts (DS said yell "DIE MF DIE MF DIE MF DIE!" 🤣😭 I'm serious 🤣) and to do this until my ammunition was depleted. So I sit down, get my thumbs in the triggers and we are on the top of a hill looking over a valley into some thick pine trees biggest I ever seen in my life. So DS said "Fwr" (fire when ready), and I'm looking at everyone's tracers going down range and they are shooting down towards the middle and bottom sections of the trees and range, they have some cars and tanks buried in the side of the range to shoot at, and I start shooting and these bullets are literally going going so far and so high over the tree line I'm watching the arch of the stream of tracers going over the trees by about 10-20ft. DS I guess finally turns around and 👀 and him and like 3 of them are all like "YOOOOOO PVT HOLD ON, CEASE FIRE!" As they are literally holding back so much laughter it started to make some of the other privates that were around start to wonder what was going on. They had to adjust the elevation on this thing for so long it seemed 🤣💯 but man it was one of the funniest/coolest moments I have ever gotten to experience. But that's my 50.cal story! And the MGS4 reference was top notch 🤌 that game was first experience with the A2 and wanted one ever since. That thing shoots through like 15 enemy's at once if you can get them to line up right 💯👀.

My father, RIP, taught many people over the years the love the gun shooting... Commonly the first step he took was to give the person a 1 Gal Milk Jug Container and tell them to physically tear it apart - which is impossible for most people! The had them shout at it! Third set was to fill the bottle with water and he had them fire one round at about 10ft away... Which he used to show the damaging effect that one round can have - "That's what you could do to a person and being careful is how you prevent it"! Seeing the x3 2Litters lined up... I can't help but remember the many times over the many years of him using that technique!

What's more over kill is using a 50 cal to shoot down a helicopter. This didn't pass prototype because it turns out almost any rifle can shoot down a helicopter if you can hit it. Spent over a decade as airframe in the army. Even worked on the hind at JRTC... and yes, even the hind can be shot down by a regular old AK if you are dumb enough to hang out and put the bird in that situation. You can only armor parts of a helicopter and the majority of it is 32 thousandths skin (can vary some, but you get the idea) and thicker aluminum structure. Unless you just target the plates on the side, you can blast through a rotary wing aircraft easy. Speed > armor on helicopters.

Honestly this doesn't seem like an awful idea. Especially with what the battlefield in Ukraine is like. Stinger missiles are expensive while 0.50 BMG is cheap. Helicopters and drones are pretty abundant as well as lightly armored vehicles & technical (no armor). I could definitely see Barrett reintroducing the concept, with some modern adjustments, as a cheaper anti-vehicle option for regional forces.

Stick a fancy electronic sight on it with a wind and angle adjusted reticle. Plus give it an electric trigger for ease of pull and optionally linking with the sight. Maybe even a moving target lock and lead projection. Probably cost a lot more but still cheaper to fire than a stinger and more practical for use against drones.

I've said it a million times, this is the type of application bullpups should be used for. Larger calibers, out of longer barrels, giving you more mobility than a nonbullpupped counterpart. There's issues within bullpups that are just ever-present, but bullpup rifles in larger calibers is the most practical application for the concept, well logically atleast. It's still a good few generations away from being a perfect concept. If this went past the prototype stage, we'd likely see quite a few variants or other companies designing off the pattern being used for more forward based snipers (I guess is the best way to word it), or whatever else you could dream up.

Why didn't they adopt it. It seems way cheaper than anti Tank/helicopter rockets.

@@maxsteinlechner6085 I'd assume it's the lack of precision. It doesn't have any way to really track a moving object, so it is rendered pointless even if it's cheaper.

@@talon_xi also: what's the realistic application? For one, its effectiveness is doubtful: if you hit the helicopter, it won't go down, it likely won't be bothered at all, unless you hit in a very specific spot. Then you also have to consider that someone has to carry this beast around. Why wouldn't you give that guy a machine gun, or if you really want to take down a helicopter, an RPG? There's just no point.

@@bavarianpotato you hit any part of a helicopter that isn't empty space, it's out of commission. Machine gun? You know how heavy an M2 is? An RPG is unguided. It's not for helicopters.

Y'know Brandon, WE didn't choose to detonate a pipebomb a few feet from us when we COULD HAVE CHOSE ANY LENGTH OF WIRE with which to detonate said homemade explosive. So at this point, I'm not sure anybody knows what you might do with regards to safety. And no, you're never living that one down.

7:33 Yess, we definitely need an AKGuy and Joerg Sprave cross over :) Maybe introduce your american audience to all the cool shit Joerg had to invent/build for us germans to circumvent our maximally retarded gun laws. I was thinking about maybe the Airringer (an honest to god double shot pistol boltor) or the instant legoals contraption (a magazine fed bow that probably isn't Commiefornia compliant). Have nice day Brandon and greeting from Germany :)
