Maintenance costs are completely different then the cost of component failures. Maintenance is to prolong the life of your engine, transmission to get the most life out of it. High end German cars after about 4 to 5 years will have many component failures that has nothing to do with maintenance. There are 3 different costs of running a car, maintenance, consumables/wear and tear brake pads, tires) and component failures. People who buy/lease these cars don’t care, because they will get rid of it every 3 years before these component failures happen. But the person who buys it when it’s 3 to 4 years old, good luck.

I’ve owned Audi, Mercedes, VW, and Volvo (never a BMW) and the maintenance costs for me, anyway, was always higher than on Toyotas or Mazdas that I’ve owned. The euro cars are sweet if you don’t mind coughing up the cash that eventual repairs are going to incur. For me, Mercedes was the worst. I sold my 2011 E-class Blutec and never looked back.

Your figures sound WAAAAAY too low! Are you sure those are per year costs and not per month costs? I just dropped $350 yesterday for a worn out exhaust solenoid on a 2015 Nissan Rogue --- and that was after close to $1,000 the week before for the brakes, transmission flush, and a bunch of other little things. And I maintain this regularly, all the routine service every 15K miles plus oil change every 7,500. Our 2012 Subaru Outback, I easily spend $1,000 a year on maintenance. I would LOVE to pay only $250 a year on maintenance!

Having owned a BMW in the past and the Mrs currently driving a Volvo... I agree, those are insanely expensive to run, considering they don't really offer that much special in exchange. The Volvo is boring, and my Bimmer was stupidly uncomfortable, not matter how much money into repairs I poured. Then again, a single most expensive repair I've ever had to do to a car, was for a... 10-year old Hyundai. Complete engine and turbocharger swap, 7.500€ total and that only covered me used high mileage engine and refurbished turbo. Brand new ones would have doubled the price.

Those numbers are way too low. It's about $35 for me to do DIY oil changes every 5000 miles and I do 4 per year. So $140 for a Prius C and its tiny engine. Dealer costs would be a lot more. Plus you have to do the rest of the work like Air Filter, cabin Filter, transmission, brakes and brake fluid, tires, windshield wipers, coolant.

Well this study/survey should be broken down further, specifically because the parts cost of a BMW or Audi is not going to be the same parts cost for the SAME EXACT PART as on a Honda or Toyota, for example a water pump. So you have *frequency* of maintenance/repair and also differences in *parts cost* and *labor rates.* It really doesn't dissect the numbers enough for me for my taste. I think it should be generally summed up as, if you want to blow your money without end, buy a German car, if you value your money, buy an Asian vehicle. Enough said.
