Started watching firefighting videos a month ago. Have seem ~300-500 now. Usually smart-phone video. But this is far and away the best done of them all. It shows many of the elements of the teamwork needed to fight such a large fire, e.g. putting a pump into the canal for a source of water (they would lay hose from that canal all the way to the fire site ~1km away), the snorkels (high aerial nozzles) going into action, the changing of the air tanks, the effective effort to contain the fire at the firewall (spraying into the overhead light fixtures, and onto the wall where it threatens to break through).

At 3:15 we learn how well modern fire-stop walls work. He enters the building and I think, "Is this the correct place?" because there is a long hallway and no sign of the fire, which is in fact just on the other side of the right-hand wall.
@TheRonKlimo
@TheRonKlimo 5 жыл бұрын
True but we also learn how an incorrect fire wall works as well. (or a fire wall with penetrations not fire stopped) A true fire wall would not allow the fire to be over their heads, It would extend above the roof and prevent this. When they start knocking out the lights with the hose stream, it shows a definite incorrect installation or maintenance of a fire wall. This facility also seems like it is pretty new... so what ever codes they are using, they didn't prevent a massive loss to this facility....They do a great job recognizing this with a TIC and make the stop by shooting through the light fixtures.

There was no other automatic fire extinguisher system like sprinkler?
@david6054
@david6054 3 жыл бұрын
@@weekdaycycling Sprinklers are nice in single story rooms but it looks like some kind of warehouse, if there is a lot off stuff sprinklers will be a lot less effective as they will create areas sprinklers may not reach. I am not even sure if they would have activated by themselves or if they need manual interaction in both cases they might have been activated to late.

This channel is perfect. I'm from Germany and we could learn so much from our direct neighbours. Sometimes I think we are living in the 19th century in german fire departments, so many things we could do with our equipment but we aren't allowed to. I mean it's not as bad as it is seems to be in america following some comments but we could do more in less time if we weren't stopped by laws. Keep up the fantastic work you do and allways return safe!

Interested to know what your comment of "not as bad as is seems in America" means......
@thoughtfox2409
@thoughtfox2409 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRonKlimo Well, first of all the American firetrucks are HUGE (and some look like a driving christmas tree) and because they are so big and heavy also a little bit slower than our engines (altough i'm in a very small voluntary fire department and have a 7.5T (16534,7 LBS) Engine wich carries only 750L (200 Gallons) of water and is pretty fast). Then the american fire departements have their firefighters trained to do only the tasks the vehicle they drive has to do, but in Germany nearly everyone is trained to be able to do nearly everything (exept for comanding or working with a chainsaw and that stuff). Also it looks like most of the houses burn down before the american firecrews start getting water on the building, but that is probably because american buildings are more often made of fast burning materials like wood and in europe most houses are made of concrete and stone wich makes them burn slower.
@TheRonKlimo
@TheRonKlimo 5 жыл бұрын
@@thoughtfox2409 its interesting to know how you feel about your brother and sister firefighters from the USA....I really think some of your points are invalid...Speed: Really...Never knew any of our apparatus to not have enough speed to get to a call, But OK ! (smaller vehicles can go faster so Ill give you that one....lol) Maybe our slow(er) speed is due to the fact that many of our engines carry at least 750 to 1000 gallons of water, which gives us more time to attack the fire as the hydrant is hooked up with the (preconnected) LDH. Training: In regards to being trained on only the apparatus they drive is absolutely wrong...Most firefighters are trained to do all tasks, including using a chainsaw, which is a basic firefighter duty and... yes, the command structure. All Firefighters across the USA, are required to be trained in the Incident command system. Its mandatory by the federal government...In regards to the building materials, well yes....most homes are built with wood and combustible materials, not much we can do about it but push for changes and put the fires out....But... in this particular video, it appears that all your faster responses, lighter apparatus and metal or concrete buildings... didn't help this one to be save now did it....lol... Be safe out there brother !!! Oh and please send me a link so I can check out some of your equipment...Always like to see other apparatus and learn from others...
@thoughtfox2409
@thoughtfox2409 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRonKlimo Well, on video at least the engines and ladders feels slower, and as i said our department has a pretty small engine, our normed tankers carry at least 2000L (528Gallons), a normed medium size engine 1000L (about 260 gallons) of water, but we dont have one of those, we have the smallest normed engine (a TSF-W with 750L). Also German engines and ladders have to be lighter and smaller vehicles because US vehicles would get stuck in almost every street here). And also of course US Vehicles are fast enough to respond! The thing with training i saw on some documentation, if that was wrong i'm sorry. The chainsaw here mostly only gets used if a tree has fallen on a street and that kind of stuff. Of course our basic training includes the chain of command, just not how to command a group of people (wich was what i ment with commanding in the last post)! As i said the fire departements only look slower because of the fast burning wooden buildings, but actually aren't any slower than we are! Also the US Fire departements are way better at putting out forest and bush fires than we are (as seen in Meppen last year). In this video nearly half of he building was saved by the building of a stone wall. Be safe out there to!!

American firefighters do not watch this. You have a superiority complex, and this won’t help it. Early water, early water source gained, blocking tactics preventing roof spread, and good knock down. Never once saw firefighters with picks trying to poke holes in the roof ( without hose support) or sawing holes into the roof. Quick effective firefighters and well done. The whole of this building would have been lost in the USA
