Great video! I spent all day polishing my silver french horn that was black as can be with tarnish. I still have to get in the small tight spaces. Then I will get washed very clean. I also will masking tape any openings for the tubes and keys. I figure another day of polishing and it will be ready! I do instrument repair, but mainly stringed instruments, oboes, flutes, clarinets. I have never lacquered a horn. This will be a good learning experience for me! My horn has been hanging on the wall for about 35 years untouched. Now that I'm fully retired I am gonna learn how to play it!!! Thanks for the video, and I gave you a thumbs up!!!

An inexpensive Tyvek painting suit - available at Home Depot, Lowes and online - will also cover your hair and ears and be a lot less bulky. I'd come up with a way to turn the instrument that doesn't require touching any lacquered part of it.

On top of the raw brass is there only lacquer or is there something on top of the raw brass under the coat of lacquer (between the raw brass and the lacquer)?

No, they just polish the brass to a high shine then apply lacquer. That is why lacquer should be maintained. It protects the brass from thinning.

@@domepiece11 Thanks very much. I was wondering because the brass doesn’t seem too bright and shiny on instruments that had the lacquer stripped but they’re very shiny when new. Now I understand it’s because the raw brass is highly polished before applying the lacquer. Thanks again.

Are you really using a cheap Harbor Freight gun?

They spray great. I used their purple gun for 27.00, but recently got one of their HTE guns for a bit more than $100.00 Both work great. No need to get a hugely expensive gun. All your are doing is atomizing a fairly thin lacquer, not a 2 part catalyzed finish like the auto industry which are a bit heavier. Not a problem at all. I get a better pattern than my plus 35 year old Devilbis, which is a great gun, but the pattern does not open up as wide at all. Those HF guns are an amazing value. Then again, I have never tried an Iawata or Sata. Maybe I would be completely critical if I had. Not sure it is worth the investment or not doing only 15 or 20 brass overhauls or so per year. A full time relacquer shop would be a different matter though.
