Braun shaver battery replacement

You can easily replace the rechargeable battery in Braun 5000 series shavers (I use a 5414 here), but please do not start by twisting the plug unit as described in the instruction booklet - this is designed to render the unit unusable ! (If you did this already - no problem, just a bit messsy).

A very useful video. I just fixed the shaver of my father. My father has died in 2000. It feels pretty good to use his shaver sometimes. Your age encouraged me to try replacing the battery in my Braun 5414 shaver. I did successfully change the battery. Thank you very much!

I’m in the process replacing mine. I took them out but forgot to check the positive and negative direction. Do they go in the same direct or opposite. Thanks!

Early 2024 here! I’ve ever owned a single beard trimmer, *Braun 5443* , and was able to to open it and clean it up with this guide. The first time I've ever opened this one and I’ve used it ever since… hmm… I think I got it as a birthday present almost 20 years ago.

Thank you for this informative video. Was told by a service centre that they couldn't get parts for a 1508. Took it apart in a similar way to yours and just ordered the battery.

Thanks a lot! Native accumulator works about 12 years, and now I change it to usual AA.

Thanks Colin. For a Braun1508 there is nothing to pry out from the base, so you have to turn the 'plug' anticlockwise 45 deg, even though the manual says this will "destroy the appliance". The plug assembly unlocks the spring loaded catch, though the assembly has an internal ratchet so can't be turned back. However all is not lost as the rotating part can be prised off the plug with a couple of the thinnest jewelers screwdrivers or pins etc and pressed back into the original position. Now with the lug on the rotating part in the original position, the covers will clip back together.

The Braun Cruzer 6 beard trimmer (Model 5417) is quite different. It contains two AAA NiMH cells, which have spot-welded tabs, which are through-hole soldered onto the circuit board. I wasn't able to lift the circuit board (it may be glued in place), so I was not successful in replacing them. Aside from that, disassembly and reassembly was not difficult.

I am 38 some of my generation are useless and buy new, I am waiting for my new battery off ebay and going to try this on my Philips, why work another 20 hours just to buy another shaver if I can repair it lol, great video

Colin, I followed your instructions to the letter but now when I replace the top case, the shaver switches on in the 'off' position and off in the 'on' position. I have tried swapping the polarity of the battery in case the terminals were labelled incorrectly but this didn't make any difference, so I've now switched it back to the correct position (+ at the base of the shaver). Why is this reversal happening? Everything aligns correctly and the white insulating cover is in place. I'm flummoxed! Thanks!

I've fixed it - one of the switch contacts got bent up slightly without me realising when I was brushing out the inside of the case!

Mark Clothier Oh, thanks Mark, my first attempt at anything like this. I did cut out all the bits where I was scrabbling on the floor looking for bits that had flown off, and as you discovered, the top cover can be a bit awkward to re-fit too.

I actually melted the solder and pulled the tags out of the card, but it has been pointed out that it is better to cut the tags and solder the new battery to these existing tags.

NiMH, I use 2600mAh but you can use any capacity you like. Must be 'tagged' and rechargeable, 1.2v size 'AA'.

Thanks you, sir. Your video was very helpful in my accessing the internals of the Braun 5550. While very similar the tabs on the bottom aren't clear to distinguish from the body (the tabs compass the entire bottom side) and I would have never guessed at how to access the internals save for following Braun's (destructive) instructions. My great uncle purchased it for me in 1998 shortly before he passed. He had a similar unit that he used when I was a child and I always remember him shaving in the mornings. He and my great aunt spent half their adult lives in Britain and in their old age would spend half the year there so he always brought us many fine British things (Walkers shortbread, After Eights, and Smarties were my favorite but they also would bring an assortment of goodies from Harrods including this shaver for me when I came of age). The newer units look like cheap plastic toys and the 5550 was the last of a breed of shavers that looked the part. Thank you again and God bless.
