Not only did we create Khanmigo, one of the most sophisticated AI tools for learning, but Khan Academy’s CEO and founder, Sal Khan, also wrote you a guidebook for navigating this exciting new world of generative AI. Throughout researching and writing his new book, Brave New Words, Sal did several interviews with prominent and influential thought leaders in technology and the developing space of AI. Here is one of those interviews with Bill Gates, co-chair & co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
This conversation took place on June 6, 2023

Hey Sal, I agree with everything you and Bill discussed regarding AI and standardized assessments. I have done a bit of researching and academic writing about the topic and agree that the big opportunity here is using AI to assess progress and achievement at scale through richer and more flexible assessments. This idea of 'standardizing the assessor' would have been unheard of a couple years ago and presents a huge paradigm shift. Really exciting time to be working in education.

In my opinion, we will end up with personally I tutors that resemble the best teachers. I think it will be important to test the students on context as opposed to content. They can now even today research anything they want at the push button. But what is the context that’s going to inflame their curiosity? Teach curiosity with students and you have created a lifelong learner

@@tuckerbugeater I really don't want things to change. Change means potential danger. But I think the AI will change the humanity forever. As discovery of fire has, as agriculture has, industrial revolution, and finally the internet. Evolution has and will happen, despite the reign of influential people. If they didn't exist, someone else would have taken they place. Radio, calculus, agriculture, language, writing, etc. were invited in parallel by multiple people in different places. If not for Bill, we wouldn't have Windows, but we would have perhaps Doors.

From sentence to sentence. So this one I had to type all by myself and. Or speak all by myself to get them. Much more accurate with residents with me. I want to bring out the meanings of the emotions. The guidance like the words has life. So I have to use it highly wisely to get the thru sense emo in Bring out the emotion to give more guidance with direction to people much more easy understanding to reach the destination.

18:47 In the meantime while we are on the search for the ultimate Ai tutor I think parents can intervene in using the phone with an Ai tool to scan and quiz their children school notes from their notebook. To me this is a fast method to implement while the tech world attempt to solve or figure out the best way to design the ultimate Ai tutor. 😎💯💪🏾👍🏿 24:00 Undoubtedly Ai will impact our society heavily, so everything said on this episode is truthful and positive. One fundamental obstacle that need to fix immediately is Ai hallucinations, when that hallucination issue is fix (which I believe they will) the changes will be transformative.

Each person has different learning styles. Each teacher can then match learning styles with different teaching styles. AI can bring about openmindedness with regards to learning and teaching styles. The assessments will also cater to the needs and abilities of people with or without special needs. I am an A student when writing tests, exams, and so on, on a computer with an assistant making sure I understand the questions. As I have ADHD, learning and cognitive issues. I perform well in conditions that benefit my needs and abilities. I especially excell if I am alone in a room including all other options, where I can pace, ponder, and go through the myriad of possibilities for answers...and the result. I get As. Beyond As. The assistant and teacher are shocked by how much knowledge I have for any given question. Also, I can finish the test or exam in a fraction of the time. Extra does nothing here. Giving what I need to excel and I get the test or exam completed in half the time or less. I enjoy learning absorb what is taught and talk to other students. If given a standard test or exam and multiple choice in a room full of people my marks drop into the low B or C or I give up. Extra time does nothing here again. If given questions and I had to verbally answer only I could go on all day about any question or the subject matter. I was truly meant to learn by reading, talking to others, interacting in class and using my verbal skills to excel in doing well in test or exams. Multiple choice does nothing to prove my intelligence or understanding of a subject matter. Totally useless. Created to get results faster for a teacher. Nothing more. I believe with AI these tests will be banned. Who gets a job or career and answers managers or peers in multiple choice form? Hideous. Give me a chance to vocalize about a subject matter....more like real life scenarios and I can go beyond the "standard test or exam". Antiquated systems with old ways to assess. Useless for most and many intelligent people left behind. AI will assist in creating a massive amount of information to provide a learning and teaching experience that caters to each individual or group. That will be a giant leap into helping all walks of life excel.

Well actually, pre and post Industrial Revolution, we went from working nearly all day on a farm to a standardized work day, and before that we were hunter gatherers who pretty much “worked” to survive 24/7. The internet might not have introduced much of a work duration decrease, but it did introduce tons of opportunities globally, and the concept of remote jobs, etc. If not AI, robotics will lead to a big GDP increase and automation that we will very likely get more free time. It’s hard to imagine from a personal perspective nowadays, but a mathematical and logical perspective makes it obvious with these larger scale changes with technological progress.

@@ZenTheMC Good points! I was just thinking about Keynes's prediction of 15hr weeks back in 1930 and how far off we still are. I guess it depends who captures most of the 'value' that AI brings, is it the consumer (and expectations keep ratcheting up) or the producer (workers)?

Reading alone isn’t enough, there are many problems I happen upon that I need someone to refer to in order to continue in the subject. I don’t gloss over things I don’t understand. I make sure I understand something before I continue. This is especially needed for stem subjects, where problems can become increasingly unique to themselves. In school there usually weren’t enough tutors to assist with problems in the needed amount of time, and the teachers during office hours were often racist(there’s no other way to describe it) or just unhelpful Many of them seem to be in these jobs because they couldn’t hack it somewhere in industry, are there for some sick need to exercise authority, but one thing that definitely true is that I was singled out in a racist way.

There are no ways currently a way to sustain a class that's made useless in large portions. In education this is terrifying. Leisure isn't happening. Khanmigo is one of the few AIs to get it right... I hope it doesnt get influence by the technocrats...

Analogy 1: 1994 Fifa world cup. Legend Diago Maradona caught dope test positive and kicked out from Games for next 15 months. Hypothetical Question: If the game was meant to give entertainment, Maradona played well or better than others in terms of performance, what’s the problem? (Musicians or many other professionals may do same to enhance performance as well) Probable Answer: Its not fair to others as everyone is not as high (energy level) as Maradona because of substances (besides legal issues) Now: Artificial Intelligence is a pre-programmed system that helps to make better performance (not create anything new but does support by the programmer) is used by a student (for instance) where others not using AI. Naturally, results may show differences as it was programmed to mean so. Would that be fair to other students, who can not afford AI? Cheers Sal khan and Bill gates.
