Bravely Default 2 Review for the Nintendo Switch! As a big fan of the first two Bravely Default games, this new one for a console had a lot to prove to me.
Bravely Default II is the third game in the Bravely series, following the original game, Bravely Default and its direct sequel Bravely Second: End Layer. While Second was a direct story continuation from the original, Default II features a new story and cast of characters. Similar to prior titles, the game plays as a role-playing video game with turn-based battles. The game also contains a variant of the prior game's "Brave Point" system, and use of collecting different "asterisks" to change a character's job class.

Videos like this proves why Jared is so good. He's not just funny, he's critical about what he's reviewing. He knows what he's talking about and can explain it all in a quick and understanding manner, a ten-minute review is ten minutes of information that is all important for a viewer to see/hear and for the review as a whole. When he's biased, he'll say it, but he still doesn't let that sway him from ignoring a flaw that should not be ignored. When Jared is giving a normal, legitimate review, it deserves to be heard in full.

I kinda prefer the adjustable random encounters option from the last 2 games as it helps a lot when I need to grind, its way faster to just crank the encounter meter to the max and voila youre entering battles every 5 seconds, its also super useful when you just want to move on and not find any enemies at all, however that system came with the downside of making the dungeons feel kinda empty and the final dungeon underwhelming as there was nothing of a challenge besides the final boss at the end if you just disable the battles(which I did since I was already level 99 and mastered all the jobs I wanted at that point). on the other hand seeing the enemies on the screen makes the dungeons feel less empty and at least have a chalenge besides the boss. However grinding did become much more annoying in Bravely default 2 compared to the previous ones, I hated having to run after the monsters the monster treats are not as commons and I dont like having to run after the monsters and cornering them to get the consecutive battles, it wastes a lot of time for no reason and even then the bonuses didnt feel as big as bravely second in the end despite requirng way more effort.

Elvis's banter is one of my more favorite parts of the game. Always get a good laugh when I default him through a whole battle so he does absolutely nothing and then at the end he'll say "Did you see that? I'm amazing!"

As nice as Bravely Default 2 is, I honestly like Bravely Second the most of the bunch due to how fun class mixing was. I treasure the customization and the ability to mix things in the weirdest ways possible.

I also slightly prefer bravely second to default 2. BS was just another level of awesomeness. BD 2 was also excellent tho. It goes like this for me: BS>BD2>BD. I still like BD 1 a lot but the sequels really added a lot to the table not just story pacing wise but also gameplay flow and depth imo. I just love job systems in RPGs. @@KainYusanagi For me it's exactly that and I agree with the 8/10. I love BD, played both the first and Bravely Second. I'm playing BD2 like crazy, and while the weak story isn't that much important for me since I play it for the gameplay, it does bring down the score for me. As for the QoL stuff, dude I think Jared actually didn't cover all of the problems in my opinion: - For starters, there's no dungeon map, so you gotta remember all the exploring you did, which can be pretty difficult when you're stopping to battle here and there. - You can't see the quests you completed!! No "All Quests" list. - You can't "Brave" on action choices like in BS. When you wanna use a command 4 times, instead of braving it 4x and choosing it once, you gotta brave 4x then choose it 4 times. - You can't see enemy info such as HP and BP all the time on the screen without pressing X. - There's no way to interrupt your brave action choices when you realise you don't wanna use all those turns (Bravely Second's "Stop" Command). - Small thing, but whenever you change equipment, you gotta wait for the character's animation to end before leaving menus. It just annoys because it's so unnecessary. What hurts the most is that some of these are kind of no-brainers, and since they were in previous games, they hurt more.

In defense of Bravely Second, it has done features I really miss in this game, like being able to save your favorite party builds (one for grinding, one for boss fights, etc). Also I knew going from 2 screens to 1 was going to set it back some. The first two had better menu and map navigation. This game’s map just gets in the way. I once stop to reorient myself with the map open after a fight only to get in another one WHILE STANDING STILL.

The gameplay is quite perfect, but the game has many flaws. Thr sidequest system is definately not good, too repetetive, mostly terrible written. The story is ok, definately far worse than BD1, but not as utrerly garbage as BD2, the characters have an insanely good chemistry better than in BD1, but thr story is only centered about Yew and the other chars only act like an emotional support for him, which was not the case in bd1. The classes are imo far easier breakable than in bd1, which is imo a drawback. There might be more reasons as to why i wouldnt call it a masterpiece, but it definately is a million times better than trash default 2 and a solid game overall.
@skycastrum5803
@skycastrum5803 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tools-yt4sk It's really too bad about the side quests. What they were going for with them was pretty solid story-wise, and mechanically it worked well too, allowing for some variety in playthroughs. But the concept of 2 old bosses opposing each other got old pretty quick, especially after repeating everything. Plus it really cuts into the impact of a difficult moral decision if you need to choose both in the same playthrough. The story is hard for me to judge, because as I mentioned earlier, I love the backstory, and learning about it really solidified a bunch of other characters for me. Sort of agree about the story being a bit too Yew-centric, though the rest of the party have their moments, and the chemistry is great. The bestiary is also a treat. Wish more games did it like that.

Personally, Bravely Second was my favorite, it had a good cast, by far the best combat system in my opinion and the main storyline was a lot less arduous to slog through. I dislike random encounters, so I think getting rid of them in favor of visible encounters is good, but, I miss the macro-system. I miss being able to afk grind levels. The bossfights of these games are the real highlights and if possible I'd prefer being able to skip all encounters except for bosses, but alas that doesn't seem to be where the series is headed. All in all though, I agree with the fact that the game is good.

3:10 But most JRPGs (I'm not including strategy RPGs) aren't that mindless. You manage resources, or like legend of legaia you time for spirit to do more next turn similar to bravely default. I get how the status debuffs are useless vs bosses, but I've played a lot of strategic stuff; saga games even have you learn new moves mid battle, and some games are formation heavy. Heck shin megami tensei games which I don't even like thrives upon weaknesses making extra turns. Breath of fire 3 had observe and dragon genes which were fun too with the master system for replay value. Phantasy star IV had macros for specific moves to speed up battles without needing to guess unlike dragon quest AI, and combination magic if you had a guide. First game had a far better story imo but this review was pretty lame there to say that, but at least he acknowledged the terrible story at the start which the demo made me avoid. 6:35 alone not worth $60.

@@ejhockey if you don't mind dialogue heavy and it captivates you, be my guest; I've played worse like dandruff guy and annoying chick in ys 8 lol. Though for someone to overhype the battle system as though it innovates the JRPG is condescending to anyone who played the games I mentioned, or even Suikoden 1 and 2 which varied between war, dueling and unite attacks for party battles. The runes being limited use helped cut down on casting judgment or whatever strongest spell all day lol. Dunno if sui 2 cooking minigame counts as fighting but that was fun too. At least bd2 has a card game though it sucks these games are all still expensive compared to all the first party games that had a price drop, like I bought Pikmin 3 for $30 last month.

The graphics and chibi style were a necessity when the games were on the 3ds but I agree that they could have upped them, even though I am personally fond of them. My biggest issue is the game's poor optimisation. Brief frame-rate dips, laggy loading screens and the game freezing for a second everytime you open a party chat feels bad and is a bit inexcusable considering that the switch CAN run games that, in theory should lag more than this rpg.
@thatonenoname196
@thatonenoname196 3 жыл бұрын
@@akselevensen2763 Yeah your right. Any game that has lag means that whatever is lagging the game is not fully optimized or improved to handle it at once for the frames. No game should actually lag unless it's a very huge game on a small RAM. So there shouldnt be an excuse that this game lags and loses frames in loading times.

I've been loving this game as well. My biggest issue is some of the interface, many times I go to correct what I want my characters to do and either attack the wrong target, accidentally remove a brave action when I intended to go all out, using my white mage to cure her silence with an echo herb, only for it to target a totally different character, that sort of thing. Which when fighting bosses on hard mode results in almost an instant game over or a multi turn struggle to make up for that mistake.

I thought the gameplay was excellent. My biggest gripes though are the awful side quests and bland story. Also I prefer being able to adjust random encounters over overworld enemies because I got so sick of being chased when I wasn't in the mood to fight, especially in tight spaces. Some nitpicks are how slow cutting the grass is and how often opening a treasure chest results in a ambush, that got annoying. @@aoedus.b3409 Are you kidding me? Have you even played the past games? This game is literally a lazy as fuck retelling of the first one made 10 times worse. 4 heroes have to save the world because 4 elemental crystals are out of control causing natural disasters where theres one fake villain and then 2 real villains being a fairy and an immortal being. The first game had world building, interesting characters with REAL individual motivations, personalities, and character development. Then you have this game where all the 4 characters are bland goody two shoes with no flaws who do not develop or change at all throughout the story. Not only that but the fake main villain's motivation for quote "trying to bring peace through conquering everyone" makes absolutely no sense since there was no conflicts going on between nations before the 4 crystals were stolen. Also the evil fairy rants about hating humans and how they all need to die but never does the game tell you what humans ever did to her. I swear your standards for a good story are so low you must think the emoji movie is the greatest movie of all time.
