It's been a hot minute since I've done a Bravely Default lore analysis, and now today I get the chance to do another. Today, we're going to be discussing the Night's Nexus from Bravely Default 2, the true final enemy and boss of the game. Turns out, there's a lot more to the Nexus than you might think - and the connections it has may answer other questions as well.

In a Famitsu interview with producer Amano, he said that the woman in Bravely Default II's cover art is not Gloria, but actually the Night's Nexus' human form before she got corrupted. Because of this, it can be assumed that Inanna bears a striking resemblance with Gloria. This would heavily explain why Seth is drawn to her and follows her.

I actually thought the same thing about Seth after reading that book the first time, but I dismissed the idea because his hair looked more brown to me. It's cool to see that theory expanded upon!

So basically,Seth had to kill his crazy ex-girl friend. That is interesting to say the least. Nevertheless,I like the Nexus. She's not as horrifyingly cruel as Providence or as strong as Ouroboros,but she have the best back story by far. At least she has a reason to exist.

I must confess, the line about there being those who would have seen Seth's life cut short, and the Nexus having a very similarly phrased attack did not escape my notice. It seems far too carefully worded to be coincidence in a game like this. Another interesting "coincidence" is that both Inanna and Seth are ancient mythological names. A Mesopotamian Goddess and an Egyptian God to be precise. None of the other characters have such an explicitly themed naming set.

I actually don't think Edna was under the full control of the Nexus. I think that the Nexus ate away the memories of the good humans. For example, if Adelle was in her situation, what if her memories of Elvis, Seth, and Gloria were eaten away, leaving only people such as Bernard, Castor, Folie, Vigintio, and others. I especially believe this when the party confronts Edna. Adelle is the only person that shakes up Edna, when telling her that she used to love humans. Edna also still loves her sister to the very end imo. Like, if she didn't yell out that she'd kill Adelle when she got close, she too would have been eaten by the Nexus. Another strange plot point is that Gloria describes Castor is a very kind boy, during their childhood. Could there have been more to this? Could the Nexus have influenced Castor to drain the water crystal? Perhaps his kindness was eaten, and his aggression fostered by giving him specifically the Beserker asterisk.

I also had a mini-theory that the Night Nexus's first phase isn't actually the Night Nexus, but rather it's her companion. There are mainly two bits of evidence that I'd put up to support this theory: 1) The first phase's design has quite the wide shoulders and the chin feels a bit too square, making me first assume it was a male. That, and considering the second phase has the hands surrounding it might be reminiscent of the way he Night Nexus tried to kill Seth in the final fight. Same as when Edna gets absorbed after her fight. 2) The theme when fighting the first phase is called "Marionette of the Night", while the moment the hands show up it switches to "Wisdom lost to the Nexus". It could be that the Night Nexus is using the body as a dummy or a vessel to interact with the main world, since as you said she was imprisoned on the Isle of Nothingness far away. The one thing that does put the theory in question is Seth being there, but my theory there is just that this isn't the Seth from this world, but another. The boat sailing minigame kinda puts this evidence up there, plus the namesake of the Night's "Nexus" (aka a central or focal point), might put evidence that her demise is a constant across all Excellants. Small bonus fact: On the Isle of Nothingness, the area where you fight the Night's Nexus correlates with the geographical location of Musa, except rather than it being the highest mountain, it's the lowest point by being an endless abyss. Just something I find interesting. Excellent video as always!

A little late to the party but just some thoughts I wanted to share here I think it's interesting how in Bravely Default 1's final boss theme, the character themes play in the same order as they stand in battle (Tiz's theme, Agnes, Edea then Ringabel). However, in the song The Ones Who Gather Stars in the Night (the final boss theme phase 2), the character themes play in a completely different order: Adelle's, Gloria, Elvis then Seth's, spelling the word A.G.E.S. which further supports your theory at 13:44 Also, when the Night's Nexus tries to eat the memories of the party during the final boss, everyone is brought out of their stupor by Seth. Seth however, was brought out by someone else's voice. A voice that wasn't voice-acted in a game where everyone in every main-quest and many side-quests are voice-acted. What happens when dialogue is voice-acted? You sit back and watch the show. What happens when dialogue isn't voice-acted? You read it, sometimes out loud. If you're a streamer or a let's-player, you're definitely reading it out loud. The voice that brings Seth out of his stupor, grants max BP to the whole party and is ultimately the VIP of the final battle is you, the first letter in Pages of this story.

Her story may correlate to the story in Bravely Default I and Bravely Second. In Bravely Default I, it was stated that Sage Yulyana created the Asterisk to weaken the Crystal Orthodoxy. It may perhaps be that Inanna (Night’s Nexus) might have met with Sage Yulyana and got interested with the creation of “new asterisks”. There is also the point where Sage Yulyana and Lord Lester DeRosso were seen performing powerful magics to open portals leading to other worlds. In Bravely Second, It was stated that Sage Yulyana died after battling Ba’al Diamante, and Lord Lester DeRosso left for worlds unknown. It is clear that Bravely Second took place in the original world where Lord Lester DeRosso did not die. There is also a mention of the Sword of the Brave, it might be that Yokō took an inspiration from the weapons you can find as a drop in the hall of tribulations in the world in Bravely Default II. There also seems a connection between the gods found in Bravely Default I and Bravely Second to the Night’s Nexus in Bravely Default II. The end game dungeons found in both Bravely Default I and Bravely Second might be influenced by the gods, and so I theorised it to be that the isle of nothingness also holds true of that statement. It is seen that if you defeat a god those areas crumbles. It might be possible that the realm of the gods in the bravely series is different from the celestial realm. It will be a good concept if the next game of the Bravely Series will focus on exploring the world/s of the gods. It is not impossible that an asterisk is responsible to make a mere being to become a god in the bravely series. As I said before in the form of a past comment from another video before the released of Bravely Default II. The symbol “II” in the Bravely Default II’s title might be a subtle symbol of the phrase “Pause and Rewind”.

If they do decide to make a direct sequel to this game like they did with Bravely Default and Bravely Second, I think that game could delve more into the lore of the events that happened in the past. Who knows? Maybe the next game will be a prequel to Bravely Default 2 where we play as the original heroes of light, and we learn why Inanna was so desperate to gain as much knowledge as possible. Given the existence of the multiverse in the Bravely Default universe, we may even see characters from the other timeline pop up in the past, or have Seth, Gloria, Elvis, and Adelle travel to a parallel universe where the events of their past are happening currently, and they receive a chance to make things right.

If Seth is the Night's Nexus's/Inanna's companion then I can only imagine how hilarious and awkward the interaction before the final boss must be if he ends up remembering that + plus the fact she more than likely killed him when she became the Night's Nexus. Seth: I'm breaking up with you Inanna! This is a toxic relationship and I've had enough of it. Nexus: Don't say that, we can make this work. Seth: You literally killed me and stole my memories! Nexus: You're still mad about that? It wasn't that big a deal. You got better anyways. And the other three are standing there in the background looking awkward before Elvis says that couples therapy probably won't be able to fix this.

I imagine that the seth that we see is one at the point when he first met her. Asked when she killed and absorbed him She pretty much sucked out all the knowledge he had gained when he was first brought to their world. It was largely the wind crystal grabbing him at the point of when he was drawing before getting isekai! Her looking like Glora meant to me "Seth shared a type" This ain't Seth breaking up with Inanna since she killed "her" Seth so he ain't really leaving her as THIS one never "LOVED HER" as he never knew her!

Head canon obtained, when you beat Adam and get the nonstandard game over the Night's Nexux travels to the "real" world and becomes Providence setting the events of the first two bravely games in motion and losing her own save file protection because leaving her world weakened her asterisk enough that it's strongest ability wasn't accessible all the while her sanity slipped further until we get the Providence we encounter in Bravely Second.

There's also the weird part on how the themes of the Night's Nexus refer to it as a "puppet". The connection to Providence and the Night's Nexus effectively turning herself into a Ba'al. . . What if Providence was looking into taking Excillant for itself but wanted to focus on Luxendarc instead, so it corrupted Innana to clear out Excillant for it. Kind of how Providence sends the Ba'al to do to Luxendarc.

I was kinda disappointed when Bravely Default 2 didn't had the 4th wall break so I'm really glad you explained the book and how Inanna came to despair her world was fictional. Another point that could help is that the cover art of Bravely Default 2 isn't Gloria but Inanna human form before she got corrupted. So maybe we're seeing the past of Inanna looking to us the players of the outside world or reality with Inanna having a resemblance to Gloria

It never occured to me that Seth was the dear friend to Night's Nexus who was murdered. Before, I was just thinking "who is Seth? What is his backstory?" and it bothered me and didn't seem right. Now it makes sense and the game feels more complete. I wish there were more clues given because I doubt most people will figure it out. Maybe one day there will be a re-release with a much needed bestiary and quest log, a post game dungeon, and it will better explain this matter with Seth. I wouldn't mind if the game comes right out and tells you this is how it was, with a flashback scene of Seth and Inanna from 1000 years ago. As for the similarities between the final bosses... they are beings who have reached god status in the bravely world, and they'd like to escape to the celestial realm to destroy it or have control over it. Nice job pointing out the similar appearance and moves they have, but I'm not sure if there are any relations other than that. You could probably make videos like this for each of the final bosses. I don't think the first two have as much backstory revealed but there's still a lot to talk about. Especially with Providence who uses a move called 'New World Order' and looks the same as the eye atop the pyramid on the dollar bill, which is actually called The Eye of Providence. I think the developers were definitely trying to say something with that. Also I didn't know there was a false ending after defeating Adam early. That's cool. Nice video, I really enjoyed it.

Is It possible that the player Is helping "his own"Seth? I mean, every player have his personal game, and every Seth have same background. The night Nexus, seeking for knowledge, want to devoure Memories from outher worlds, and in this way created multiple copy of herself, for restore in case of defeat, but in this way created multiple copy of her memory...with Seth in it. Some players ended the game, others dropped...others never bought It. Completing the game we clean the game from Night Nexus, but other players have the nexus in it. At the beginning of the last chapter we are seeing another player save file, where he/she lost the last battle. It's like all player have a "collective memory" and we are trying to clean our copy from the nexus, hoping to clean all copy and save the "outher worlds" from beeing devoured. Is It to much? 😅

@RedNovaTyrant
@RedNovaTyrant 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question! There are a couple of ideas I have that might answer it, one very simply being that she didn't think Seth could be the same person that had been killed by the Nexus ages ago. That being said, she could've made a remark about how similar he looked to "someone she once knew", but then again Esmeralda doesn't bother telling the party directly about Inanna and how she revealed the Asterisks to her - we only learn about that through her diary, so perhaps it's not a topic she wanted to engage. Still, I do recognize that this is a pretty solid poke at my theory. And same! I too wonder what the deal with Folie is...

The way I see it, when the Night's Nexus consumes the memories of someone, it also removes the memories of that person in others from the world. While anything written about or drawn of them remains, it's like the person is a picture that's been scribbled over. You might be able to remember tiny details about them, like hair color, but most of them is unrecognizable. So for example Esmeralda remembers that Inanna had a companion of some kind, but not their name or what they looked like. Which is why she doesn't recognize Seth. Or for Aileen. The fairies remember they had a queen before Esmeralda stepped in to fill the role of their leader, since obviously there had to be someone before her (and possibly Aileen's role as a Hero of Light who helped seal the Nexus previously), but they don't remember where she went or what happened to her. And them not remembering what happened to her could have contributed to them sealing off Mag Mell. Since Aileen went missing while in the outside world, it'd be pretty logical to assume that it was the result of humans, so they seal off Mag Mell in order to protect the rest of their kin from suffering the same fate.

Such an interesting thought and analysis, really enjoyed the video But a question, at athe beginning of the game when Seth sees the map for the first time, he states that it seems he doesn't know where he was and the map seems wrong to him Do you believe that years ago before the nexus was there the world was different and it shifted through the years?

That could certainly be the case; even in the original Bravely Default, Eternia wasn’t always surrounded by mountains. That happened over a very short course of time, and Seth by this theory died 1050 years before the game’s events. But the easier answer is that he simply doesn’t recognize Excillant because he has no memory of the place, or what happened there, as the Nexus had consumed his mind. And thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it :)

I just finished the game recently and had lots of questions and wasn't sure how I felt about Seth and the Night's Nexus. All the other characters had there own developments, and while Seth is of course partly a self insert for the player, I was hoping for more (I really liked Yew when I played Second years before). That said, Pokemon's my favorite series so a self insert is what I'm used to, so it wasn't a huuuge deal. Funnily, the thought that Seth and the Nexus were connected never came to me when they were who I questioned the most and makes me like them a lot more, especially with the Nexus having always been a looming threat instead of what Airy and Anne did in just serving a higher being. That Nexus attack name screams the connection between the two. Then again, I missed the diary in Wiswald, so I'm a bit klutzy with connecting the pieces and thought for sure Emma (and maybe Sloan) was gonna be a villain cause that sidequest in the institute had Elvis say her physical age was wack. For sure she's been around for thousands of years and had ulterior motives- no she just used magic to stay alive a bit longer and died eventually (and then Sloan kinda did that age change anyway when you had to fight him which felt like a jab at my theory lmao). Either way, great video!

Gotta say, beat the game just yesterday, and didn't draw some of these connections, but they sound very much like what's meant to be going on. Night's Nexus being a god (or in this case, not really a straight up god, but very godlike) like the other two games that had gods makes sense they all knew about an outer world. Seth being the person who loved Innana also makes sense thinking about it, though the final fact you made about the draws between Providence and Nights Nexus has me curious. As much as they try to distance BD2 from the other games by saying its entirely its own world and everything, it's also known throughout all three games there are multiple worlds/dimensions, plus with the comparisons between the two, it almost makes me wonder, are these alternate forms of the same god, just for each of their own "worlds" or "dimensions", or are they just meant to be similar for the sake of being a throwback to Bravely Second? Which then in that case also makes me wonder if possibly, since all these gods know about an "outer world" being the real world, is it possible that a Bravely Second for BD2 could come out to draw it closer to BD1, so a Bravely Third could connect the two completely and the entire multiple dimension stuff? Bravely is a wild series that man, when you dive into it, while you can find some answers, I feel some stuff has yet to be connected.

His family is mentioned to be backers of the Institute in Wiswald by one of the Mage's in the building there (heard this NPC during the quest to reach Roddy in Chapter 2) Frankly, Elvis stated he doesn't like to bring them up much and him being him. Most never notice it (Even Castor threw doubt on it because of how El presents himself, but then we know he's an elitist jerk so that makes sense that he assumed all nobles would act as he and Glora do) it more illustrated how more down to "earth" he is and how is CAN be weary of trickery and such especially dealing with nobles, those in power, ETC. It's likely Elvis isn't on grand terms with his family during the point of the story. Not to disownment as he's still using their last name. But is likely in "your free to do as you like, but you won't do so on our dime ma boy!"

That's just a theory, A GAME THEORY !

speaking of the similarities to Providence I realized the game as a whole feels like what would happen if you combined the stories of BD1 and BS into one mishmashed story You have an immensely powerful being sealed away who wishes to destroy the world and consume all (Ouroboros), who ends up learning that their world is fabricated and that there are people looking into the world to observe it (Providence), who have a fairy servant who's sole goal is to bring them into the world to destroy it and/or bring a new world order (Both), and the crystals are only a temporary solution to the larger problem (Bravely Default), and the only way to deal with the threat is to receive outside help from the player who has to mess with the game's saves (Bravely Second), but the supposed 'Main Antagonist' is just someone who wants what they think is best for the world but ends up contributing to the larger problem (both). The main character acts as a player stand in while also having their own personalities and has experienced a traumatic loss of a loved one (Tiz and his brother, Yew and his brother, Seth and Innana), the leading female role is a woman who's duty is to protect the world from the threat that is immediately endangering the world (Agnes and the dying Crystals, Magnolia and the Ba'al, Gloria and the Night's Nexus's seal weakening), a man with a book that holds all the secrets to the looming threat (Ringabel with his journal of his life in his world, Elvis with the Nexus's memories), a man who has undergone mysterious experiences prior to joining the party (Ringabel from the previous world, Tiz having fallen into slumber after releasing a celestial possessing him, and Seth who washed up on shore with barely any memories of who he once was), the woman who stood against her people's beliefs to fight for the greater good (Edea, Edea again, and Adelle who challenged her people's beliefs that all humans were tainted and would only bring about destruction, and the woman put in charge of the Wind Crystal (Agnes and Gloria). Oh and the comic relief character (Ringabel in BD1, Edea in BS, and Elvis in BD2). Also the fairy companion that contributes to a big plot twist (Airy actually being the enemy, Anne turning against Kaiser + being Airy's sister, Adelle being a fairy [and a good one, this time]) It's like they wanted to take what they did with BD1 and BS and fix the mistakes they made but without remaking both games from scratch so they just made a new game and made both stories into one singular story

Ok, but that final boss fight was still a bitch! Also, I think you should have mentioned the ‘person’ who was calling to Vigintio during that one side quest (Where you get the divine staff).

So a lot of this is in the assumption that Seth is the black haired compaion. But Seth has dark brown hair though?

Her backstory is cool, but she sounds generic AF, all she says is "memories, mine, aaahh" with a really bad voice effect (my favourite final boss in Bravely series voice still is Ouroboros). It's a bit dissapointing

sure and Ouroboros is all about “destruction! destroy everything!” gonna be honest, his voice is so deep you can barely tell what he’s saying. the only way to know is the text box. there’s also no build up to him at all. no mention anywhere except near the end of the game. he kinda just shows up.

@@YourBoyGuzma Yeah it's pretty much trying to argue why a pot is better than a kettle in this regard. 😂 At least Providence got some foreshadowing, though it's a shame he's stuck in the game with the most memey writing and ultimately isn't any better 😅

@@YourBoyGuzma He does have one of the best boss theme ever though. I think that is biggest reason why people remember him so fondly.

@@izzy1356 yeah if anything I’d have to say Ouroboros = Providence = Nexus since they all have their different pros and cons. it’s also hard for me to decide which I prefer over the other so I just put them all equal. but they’re all really amazing final bosses nonetheless.

@@VGPorage yeah that’s probably the reason why, but I will admit even if Ouroboros was a whacky final boss with a strange design, he was a bit imitating with his music. absolute banger right there. same with Providence and the Nexus. all of them were unique and epic in their own ways even if they all had whacky voices and crazy designs.
