Unfortunately, I totally agree. If this was the first time I had seen KT I would be moderately impressed and think "they have potential". But this is far from the first time. Not all past 3000s have been a resounding success but most put this into the shade. Okay the movements are excellent but there is the flavour of the format for the National Competitions ( which suits the judges there) but not that of a Marching Band. And the arrangements (of the tunes) - increasing tempo does not always mean increasing effect, and, sorry, but they remind me of some famous rock group doing a concert 20 years after their prime time. Nothing here to make the audience gasp (though some may be satisfied). Where is the joyous feel, the hint of fun, and the occasional and unexpected hint of power? Gone with the swing for which they were once so renowned. They were a truly unique band and okay the dancing is still there but it feels like more of a compulsion instead a heart-felt expression of the music. But I think that is the future for KT. The present Music Director has a totally different philosophy to the previous one - he is the typical Music Teacher (not an insult, and could well be a really nice guy) whereas the previous one had the aim of having the students experiencing and enjoying the music with the audience being entertained. (Check out his interview after he left KT.) And possibly the students themselves are looking for changes - only natural. Will any of the current students break into a spontaneous jam session ( as with Yuinna Mita in2010, in the park), or demonstrate, in training outfits with not a pony tail in site, in 2012. In the last two and a half years I have not seen a single performance which I would want to keep and watch again - though I have tried to be fair. Please note I am not saying that these are useless performers, far from it, hard working students who do their best to produce quality music. But what I am saying is that, along with many musical phenomenon, they are now, consciously or unconsciously, now appealing to a very different audience. If people like what they do fine, but a lot of people will miss the magic they brought as the Most Entertaining Marching Band in the World. I doubt if anyone will equal their appeal then. There is a difference between listening to Good Music and being entertained by Good Music. But this cannot be helped - that is life, so often. Those who prefer the early, or middle Beatle records to those who prefer the later ones. Criticise this view if you like but I have seen many comments impressed by what KT is doing and quite a few who find it difficult to watch their videos. The above performance would have me politely applauding, previous ones would have me standing and clapping to wake up the dead. Some would say - good riddance to such hooligans. I am simply supporting the "disappointed" and would say to similar "Let´s enjoy some of the past performances, this is not for me, but good luck for the future". Best wishes for KT, whatever I think right now.

@@alanallison3200 You keep saying you don't like the current KT and they are not your cup of tea but I noticed you still watch every new video that comes out and leave the same long commentary. Why bother to watch if the new KT does not meet your expectations?
@alanallison3200
@alanallison3200 Жыл бұрын
@@LL-ii1dc I could make a rude reply, but why bother. For the record I don´t leave a long commentary for every video I watch, about 10% currently. And your reply, whether intentionally or not, discourages people from making any adverse commentary. I have kept on watching because any views offered should be based on as much sampling as possible (one swallow does not make a summer). I try not to repeat myself too much and have tried to draw a picture of what are in effect quite natural changes but most likely they will mean the audience will not be the same (exceptions to that are also natural). I have had it confirmed that the changes are deliberate and there is a general wish to alter direction. And what they were doing was extremely difficult and exceedingly demanding. And to seek change is only natural. But the brutal truth is that what we have seen over more than 20 years is unlikely to be repeated. A load of factors coming together was behind their previous performers. One crucial element was the rendition/arrangement of the tunes by the previous music director - whose stated aim was to entertain the audience. And likely, because of those arrangements, the students themselves came up with dance moves that complemented what they were playing - in a way no other band has managed to do. They are still playing good music - but with a very different taste. And there is the nub. Yes you can take old tunes, slow them down, rearrange the emphasis of various instruments and some will think that´s fine but not everybody. Having been spoilt by some outstanding performances one half expects to get the same again. (Important to note if one had only been watching for the last 3 years they would be rated as a way above average marching band. But not mind blowing. Some of the recent changes have been good - on their visit to Taiwan I noticed the DM not only beat out the rhythm but also controlled the volume, and some of the choreography had been successfully adopted from the halls to the open air. But compared to previously the parade sections seemed weak. I hoped that was done deliberately for the Taiwan audience but subsequent events make that unlikely. Although we should never forget the recording equipment. But again I am comparing - oh dear, I am not allowed to do that, sorry.) The previous Music Director did sometimes organise the playing of more sedate, reverent, tunes - to fit the occasion, fine. I sincerely hope that on their next visit to the USA they achieve more success and recognition (Japanese audiences seem to have woken up to them, and the credit they give to Japan, no longer do I see a comment like "saw someone smiling - must have been a tourist".) And the American audiences ( a sizeable proportion of them - not all were interested ) really appreciated what they saw and heard. But listen to as much of their reactions as possible - to many it was because here was a band who wasn´t playing "funeral" music (an exageration of course but a valid point), looked lively and happy. And here was a band that could play serious music but also making it enjoyable, even in an indoor setting. I suspect on the next visit they will get something rather different - with varying reactions. (But for their sake, I hope I am wrong). It meant a lot to the students to see how they were appreciated - summed up by DM Ron holding back the tears at the end of their final performance. And what of the original intentions of the first Music Director - check out the various translations- are they still the aims? If not, okay time for a change. But he started off something quite unique. And the second Music Director ( a rare bird indeed) spread an infection of musical entertainment. The third one will have them them play quality music. But there can be a difference between a tune well played and a tune that entertains. And it was such hard work for the students, especially the physical side, (check out the training videos) how long could that continue? There are those in this world who have views on people, or groups, or beliefs, who will never change that opinion (most obvious in politics and religion, but also music). The same people often think it a crime to offer any viewpoint that varies, whatever reasons are behind those views. (By the way I have received replies along the lines "find it difficult to finish watching any of their recent videos" and "where has the spark gone" but it is not pleasant to offer some thing less than praise for an outstanding group of students - who like all the other marching bands are only playing what they have been taught to play.) The honest reply to those who are not totally happy is simply to say - "It´s different now, some are happy some are not. It looks like the changes are permanent but we all have their other performances to watch - they will never disappear.) Even before they incorporated dance moves they often looked they were threatening to burst out of the blocks - where is that now? A group of high school students (mainly female) from Japan, once showed the world a very special form of entertainment but nothing remains the same. However they broke the ice in the world of musical possibilities an outstanding achievement. And behind any criticism - I would love it if they could have the same effect in the States as in 2017-18. We´ll see.
