important context: Brazil hosted their first world cup in 1950 and since they hadn't won a world cup yet the hype was huge, after they lost in the final against heavy underdogs Uruguay (that was the game with the highest attendance in football history at ~200'000) many Brazilians dubbed that game as the worst tragedy in Brazilian sports history, as they didn't know if they'd witness another world cup in Brazil during their lifetimes. It took 64 years before Brazil could host another world cup in 2014 and it was viewed as a chance to rectify the tragedy of 1950 and a chance to finally be able to win a world cup on home turf but the exact opposite happened, another tragedy at a home world cup and who knows how long it'll be before the world cup returns to Brazil. I remember watching this game and I felt so bad for them when the cameras panned to the fans and everyone was crying

I remember this game, I knew Germany was going to win after I saw the national anthems (Neymar and Thiago Silva were out, yet David Luiz was holding up a Neymar shirt as if he died or something, moment Germany got the 2nd, Brazil just quit, I thought Germany would win but I didn't expect to see them crush Brazil, the difference in mindset was illustrated in the last minute, Brazil score their consolation goal in the last minute and the German defence and Manuel Neuer just looked pissed off that they didn't keep a clean sheet

@Ned-Ryerson
@Ned-Ryerson Ай бұрын
What I find off about the original video is the fact that back then, international perception was one of very shaky optimism rather than buoyancy on the Brazilian side. Sure, they had gone through against two tough opponents, but the team always appeared mentally frail, and the attempt to rally around Neymar's jersey was just a symptom of that insecurity. The Germans had had their scare against Algeria, where they got lucky on several occasions, and then seen off France, which has always been a big challenge since 1998, so, if any team was quietly confident, it was them. In a way, this game was already decided before the kick-off: If anything, and I mean literally anything, went wrong for Brazil, it would be over, and so it proved.
@mrmr5580
@mrmr5580 Ай бұрын
@ThomasSamoth-ls8ed true, but it illustrates the difference in mentality, the Germans just got on with it, where as Brazil were almost mourning over Neymar, it was a sign that we should have ran to the bookies and bet everything on Germany

@@ThomasSamoth-ls8ed 1. Reus was not even at the tournament because of injury. The German team was used to play without him. Not one person in Germany thought about Marco Reus before that game. ...for me as a German watching that game was fantastic, as I of course wanted my team to get to the final... until the 2:0 - then it became spooky... I didn't enjoy or applaud the goals following, and I think many German fans felt the same... it was about winning, yes, but not about humiliating the opponent, especially the admired and loved Brasil team in its own country... when the camera showed Brasilian fans in tears I felt for them... I didn't want the game to go like that... Thiago Silva was severely missed in the defense, and Neymar was also not there... after a fierce start, hoping for a quick score, to then defend it, the tide turned against them... the German offensive players teared the wobbly Brasilian defense apart... sad to watch, even as a German fan...
@AlberichHasegawaVonSlyntheryin

The primary areas of failure in the match: 1. Underestimating the peril posed by the opponent and overestimating one's own capabilities. 2. Insufficient preparation and strategic foresight. 3. General defensive confusion. 4. Inadequate territorial control and positioning on the pitch. 5. Deficiency in leadership and effective communication for team reorganization. 6. Tactical indiscipline among certain players... 7. Also, inefficiency in defensive and offensive transitions, leading to vulnerability post-possession loss. Regarding the scoreline, it's worth noting it was even more disheartening. For those who may not recall, the Netherlands secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Brazil in the third-place playoff. Additionally, one might argue the Germans displayed a hint of mercy.

Brazil is definitely a great choice for starters, after you´re done with Brazil I´d pick Germany (so you see the 7-1 wasn´t THAT surprising), Uruguay, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Not only because of these teams´achievements, but of their very distinctive and unique approach to football, called Gegenpressing, Garra Charrúa, Catenaccio, Tiki-Taka and Total Football respectively, while the Brazilian School is called Jogo Bonito

I've been watching the sport since I was around 9 or 10, my first world cup was 1982 in Spain, the 78' one I didn't care that much to watch. The one I did sit down and watch from beginning to end and followed the results closely was Mexico 86' when the great Diego lifted the trophy. By then I was a really avid football fanatic, following both Club and International games, my club team being River Plate of Argentina. When you've watched this sport for a good amount of years, you'll start noticing patterns. What goes around, comes around. Many moments of "divine justice" or Karma are constantly being dished out. Teams that win with help by the refs or mistakes, end up paying the price. Teams that humiliate others, end up getting humiliated in return, and so on. This was just another one of those moments. We don't know if it's a revenge for what happened in the 2002 final or if it's just the beginning of another moment where in the future Brazil will trash Germany in a similar fashion.. but keep your eyes peeled. That's what makes this sport so great!

The problem was that they where not prepared to process the 0:1. This game was so loaded with how important it is to win, that they where mentally blocked after the first goal and they where beaten after the second. The Germans stayed on full power because such a game can turn around. Sweden turned a 4:0 into a 4:4 during the qualification tournament a year earlier, so the Germans stayed very concentrated almost up to the end.

A bit of context, I remember after that game there were several reports of people rioting in the streets in anger because of that loss. You gotta understand, hosting a world cup demands a huge investment from the goverment and Brazil wasn't really that great at that time economically, so many people complained about the lack of investment in other areas that should've been priorities. But Brazil's path in the tournament was slowly winning the people and squashing down the criticism, it seemed like everybody was on the same boat right until that game against Germany. Losing like that was devastating for sure.

Sometimes sport is cruel because the wrong team wins. Not that unusual, in fact it's part of the charm. Then once in a blue moon sport is cruel because someone (or in this case a team) is forced to see through to the end what amounts to the worst thing that ever happened to them. The longest game ever. I'm not from Brazil, but that was a brutal watch. People were crying in the stands, not a resigned still kind of crying - no, they cried from a state of shock, horror and excruciating pain. You know, the way you cry if the bomb dropped in your neighbourhood and the bodies of loved ones were strewn around you. And as soon as the final whistle blew, the Brazilian players fell to ground crying too, having kept a brave face for an hour plus. The world felt Brazil that day. It's just one of those freak things that almost never happens. Almost. Germany did go on to win the whole thing though.

Neymar pretty much carried the team through the tournament and when he got injured there was a very special atmosphere. You had the impression that Jesus have died and all hope was lost. The other players then thought that they have to prove that they can win without Neymar. So they started the game with a very offensive mentality and approach, trying to overrun Germany. After the 0:2 the players complettely lost their cool and tried to force it, leaving an unorganized and confused rest defence alone against the well organized german pressing scheme. At this point the game was just over and the only question left how high Brazil will lose. They tried even harden in the second half and were lucky that Löw told his players to slow down. Otherwise the game would've ended with a double diggit score for Germany.

Comment from a German: We are able to have empathy with the brasilian side - no one of us would trample on a opponent already laying on the floor. A real sportsman shows always respect. To the reason why this happens: very easy - too much pressure was loaded on brasils national team. Everyone awaited a great victory in Brasil - the expectance was that playing at home the team would win the cup. With this victory the brasilian wanted to overcome all the misery in their country. All problems should be forgotten in an act of national triumph. So 200 Million Brasilians were sitting at the TV and expected nevertheless than a wonder. The players knew it - the pressure was to big - they was doomed to fail under this circumstances.

The presenter of the video really builds a false narrative about the teams' respective forms going into the game. Brazil had really scraped through games against average teams with unconvincing performances, including penalties in the last 16. Germany had beaten one of the top international teams (France) in the quarter final and had played great football in the group stage, easily looking the best team in the tournament at that stage. And for about a decade before this they had been threatening to win the world cup as consistently one of the best teams but just not getting over the line (losing an absolutely classic semi-final to Italy in 2006 for example; one of the best world cup games i've ever watched). Add to that Brazil had lost their influential captain and Neymar, their only world class creative player, who they relied on so heavily the team treated his absence from the game like a funeral... and for me watching at the time it was more a case of "how can Brazil possibly win this" rather than "Brazil should win". Really, the ONLY thing Brazil had in their favour was home advantage... granted that was a pretty big factor but they were also mentally weak and feeling the weight of expectation where the Germans were strong with a great team spirit. I don't generally gamble but i was strongly tempted on this game because the aura of Brazil had really blinded many people to how unimpressive this Brazil team actually was and I strongly fancied Germany. Of course, no-one expected it to go like THAT with that scoreline but trust me, non-casuals, people who really followed the game and had actually watched the two teams games leading up to this regarded Germany as the strong favourites: the only factor was if they would freeze in front of the Brazillian crowd... and of course they didn't. The shock was only the actual scoreline and the way Brazil just collapsed mentally in real time, in a way I have honestly never seen at that level of the game with a country of that pedigree - THAT was the shocking, memorable thing... NOT the result, to anyone who actually watched the tournament to that point with any kind of perceptiveness.

"by far the best team" germany played without real fullbacks, didn't had a natural Striker (Klose was way past his prime) and their best footballer during that time missed the whole World Cup.

@@noskill102 Germany had BY FAR!!! the best goalkeeper, the best right back with Lahm, the best central defenders at times with Boateng and Hummels and by far the best midfield with Kroos, Schweinsteiger and Khedira. No team even came close. Up front you had Müller the best goal scorer of the World Cup and Klose who was always dangerous even though he already passed his prime

@@TopDogStatus25 Lahm was played as CM until the round of 16 leaving either Schweinsteiger or Khedira benched and forcing Boateng to play on a full back position. Neuer was great, i won't argue with that. Müller wasn't considered a striker since he played as CAM or Winger for Bayern. And as I said the best german footballer during that time (Marco Reus) missed the cup due to injuries leaving the team without a natural Winger. Don't get me wrong, by the time they hit the quarter finals everyone knew that this team could ball but during the group stage the squad and especially the starting 11 fielded by Löw were viewed as mid by most germans

To put it in context, Brazil had a big name but wasn't a good Team at this time. Them "surviving" the groupstage was lucky. On the other hand germany was extremly good. They were third Place in 2006 and 2010 world cup and second in the Euro 2008 and half finalist 2012. Germany was by far the expected winner of this game. That it would be this high scoring Game was of course a surprise. But it was highly deserved and even a bit humble as germany stopped playing their a game in the second half.

Watching it live, as a neutral, was sad, in the first half it was fun because of a lot of goals and because it was Brazil, they probably could cope back, but the first goal of the second half buried that possibility :/

I always wonder what was going through Löws mind after the fifth goal and during the halftime break. Germany was 5-0 up, everybody thought the game was done and dusted. No way the Brazilians could get get back into this game, regardless how much skill their players might have. Right? Not so quickly please. In the qualifiers for this World Cup tournament Germany played against Sweden at home and they were up 4-0 at halftime. Solid and convincing display. Quite a similar story but on home soil and against a supposedly weaker opponent. In the second halftime Sweden scored quickly, and from that moment Germany started to fall apart. Sweden actually scored three more goals, Germany none, so after being up 4-0 at halftime the final result was a 4-4 draw. I'm sure Löw remembered that game against Sweden during halftime so finding the right tone and words to address his players must have been difficult. You do not want to humiliate your opponent in front of their fans but you also want to secure the game. So Löw told his players to remain focused and play seriously on the pitch, as if they would do in a tight game. Anyone he considered not sufficiently focused would find himself on the bench in the final. And nobody wants to sit on the bench when they have the chance to play for the biggest trophy in world football. On the other side Brazil are the World Cup record winner, taking the trophy back home five times, with countless legendary players throughout the decades. They usually have the most skilled players and no other country has so many players playing abroad as Brazil. Every European heavyweight club like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus, Milan, Inter, Benfica, Porto etc. has at least one Brazilian player in their history who is considered a club legend. Brazilian clubs like are well known worldwide and btw. the German jersey against Brazil resemble the style and colors of one of their biggest clubs, Flamengo FC, and are a respectful nod to Brazilian football. That's how huge Brazil is in world football. This 2014 Brazilian team certainly wasn't the most skilled one, compared to former squads but they had the advantage of playing at home. Most teams get a boost by playing at home and they do better than expected. But this is Brazil. Anything less than winning the World Cup on home soil would be considered a failure and a huge disappointment. So was playing at home really an advantage for them? In hindsight I think it was more of a burden for them. If expectations equal the maximum you can achieve the risk of getting disappointed becomes huge. Players need to handle that immense public pressure and in the semifinal against Germany it became obvious that Brazilian players were overwhelmed by that pressure. Even experienced players like David Luiz, Marcelo or Julio Cesar who played at ambitious European clubs were not able to convert this pressure into energy. They all looked like someone soaked all their energy out of them and this is reflected in the result of this game.

simple dude, it was done by prime messi's papa, he did papa to ronaldo, brazil and argentina in that world cup even at the 2010 world cup he did some papa to maradona and messi :P, in a serious note that was the scariest world cup national team that had ever performed in a world cup, their stats are scary to look at. till this day some of the players from that generation are still active like manuel nouer(greatest goalkeeper ever) and thomas muller are still active in bayern munich FC, tony kross an active legend of real madrid while the rest are mostly retired.

It's not a happy game to watch for a German . The Brasilians have made huge errors in the left midfield and defense. They had built their team around one superstar and there was no way to replace him after a brutal foul. The tragedy was the mental breakdown of the team. That has never happened before on the highest level professional football. Nobody was prepared for that. What was the right thing to do? Stop the match? Let the team win? But wouldn't that be even more humiliating ?

The viewers got what they deserved. Always sing the anthem at the beginning to celebrate yourself excessively and delay the kick-off - without any respect for the opponent. The spectators at the Olympic Games in Rio were even worse. When at least one Brazilian was involved, the opponents were booed and insulted. Rio was really the worst I have ever seen at an international sporting event in terms of spectators.

(at 0-5) Scoring 5 in an international is common - international football is generally of a poor standard compared to premier league or champions league, with teams of the best players in the world coming up against players who play in english lower divisions or poor 2nd / 3rd tier domestic leagues like the czech top division. Scoring 5 in the knockout stages of a world cup is amazing, more so in a semi-final, and more so against the home team and more so when that team is brazil. Insane. The first match I ever went to my team went 1-0 down and we were 2-1 up at half time. We then went 2-3 down before scoring 3 more and winning - highlights are on youtube if you want some mid 80s english first division (as the top tier in england was called back then) highlights. 1-7 to germany was 100 times more insane than my first game i went to!
