Two brazing situations using the same materials. Each of these setups has to be approached differently. In the first example watch for the angle of the torch tip. In the second example watch for the movement of the flame so that neither piece gets too hot.

It will help a lot of others that I know. I shared this with a whole group of people, so the views and subscribers may go up. You make it look easy, but believe me I know how hard it can be. And yeah, thicker metals are one thing, but doing the thin metals is tough. One wrong move and it's all over. Keep the awesome vids coming. :)

this is a very helpful tutorial. so many people don't understand how much learning to braze properly can make their lives easier in a number of different ways. for example, I am currently correcting a few small rust holes in the body of my 350z project car by simply brazing in a small filler piece and finishing with bondo. It's so much more attainable for a do-it-yourselfer, and you really start to appreciate it's uses once you start thinking out of the box. sorry for the rant. Thanks for taking the time to help other weekend warriors such as myself.

Wow, wow! Mr. Goehl, I am learning a new trick at 62. Oldest on the farm with crank-top Lincoln arc welder, they tried but I did it. Got a full sized torch kit (Harris) from Sears in 79 for bearings to re-bar. A guy selling commercial MIGs in 84, made a trade for me to fix his import engine. This is a true150 amp is way too big for sheet metal as it holds the 14” rolls but still work great. Brazing some 1/4” brake line with thru hole at two tee’s. I figured to plug 4 ends and use the last one to blow air lightly while brazing lines together but with wrap-a-round gusset to add strength to the joint from vibration. I saw your title and had to watch. Learning early on lawnmowers, them metric motorcycles then quickly fixing import car and famous compact import trucks. Back in the days where you learned a trade by apprenticeship. Here now, 55 years later, still learning and I thank you! Like/Subscribe...I’ll be watching before & then doing! Thanks again for the neat heat control idea using a steep near flat angle.

@@897473 Yes, life itself is a challenge. There was no youtube growing up on the family farm. I was running a combine in a corn field when the gigantic left from drive wheel feel out. Alone, drove back, loaded the torch & tools. After 3-4 hours, railroad ties and a manual house screw jack, let me remove the housing and the inner tapered bearing fell apart leaving the inner race stuck. Using the torch straight in, heating a narrow area. Turning the torch sideways like the video, the cutting head turned sideways, I knew an air gap was under the 4” bearing race. I was able to cut it in half and drive a new one on with a large brass punch, put it together, greased it, went back to harvesting corn. I was alone all day, truck to get parts & tools, then drive home. I was 13 years old with paper KS drivers farm/school use. I so scared that I would set the combine or field on fire, but didn’t. The things we do or have to! Thanks Mr. Goehl! Blessings.

I very much enjoy brazing and always have. In high school and middle school what we called Junior High in Michigan I loved metal working shop or metal shop as we called it. I always picked out the most advanced projects to do from the book of acceptable projects for a grade. I always just seem to have a knack for brazing my joints always look nice there always strong and I don't know I guess it's always just been a enjoyable thing for me. Now that I'm an old geezer I find myself brazing again because I set myself up a very complete metal working shop in my garage couple of lathe a mill bar benders sheet metal rollers rollers prices breaks you name it. I built most of them so it saved me a lot of money. The one thing I'm having trouble with his knowing which type of flame to use for which type of joint or material thickness excetera. I mean I can typically figure it out eventually but I don't like to trial and error on a project and have it look like crap. Is there any resources that you know of that could give me approximation oxygen and acetylene settings as well as what type of flame to use under what circumstance? Any information that you can help me with would be greatly appreciated I like doing a good job

There is brazing and then there is brazing. If you look at the gallery of pieces that I have done, you will see that I spread a lot of bronze brazing rod around. My goal in brazing is 1) to hold the pieces together and 2) to add an effect, making the piece more pleasing to the visual eye. gsegmedia.com/?page_id=3075 My type of brazing is different compared to what would be used in a machine shop to braze an intricate part for a piece of machinery. If you look at this page and scroll down you will see a number of videos that relate to the brazing I do. gsegmedia.com/?page_id=2877 I use 6 oxygen pounds and 5 ponds acetylene Also take a look at the different flames video. Often times a slight carburizing flame helps.

Hi George l am trying to make brass jewellery and l am trying to learn how to join brass jump rings and other brass bits of brass to brass so it is matching metal. l have a small oxygen and acetylene torch and was wondering what technique you would do to make this possible, or if it is even possible todo so, im not sure? Brazing or soldering. or should l buy brass solder or something like that?
@897473
@897473 6 жыл бұрын
Brazing jump rings is not easy. I rarely braze anything that small. Here is a video I did on brazing thin material. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npamfNma1b26pY0.html I'd suggest using 1/16 brazing rod. Generally I use 3/32, but for very thing material I use 1/16. You will also want to use flux. Flux video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gax-ZpunrbG1hI0.html Also, it may help to try a Carburizing Flame: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLx_jdOGq6y2fps.html

Brass can be soldered, silver-soldered, brazed, and welded! Oddly, the same brazing-rod and torch can do brazing or welding on the same material, it's a fairly fine line! Welded brass is very strong. I did a bunch of practice (with students) on a box of scrap KEYS of all things, key shops often have like a shoe box full of them. If you weld two keys together (tip to tip, so to speak) you have a long thing with two handles, you can twist the welded part severely and it won't break. Ah, some easy-flo solder has a kind of yellow color and is also very strong. You might want to use some regular kind of flux, and you can pickle stuff before and after joining, just do the regular jeweler stuff.

have you tried air-acetylene torch? Like "prest-o-lite"? I'm having good results with that. It's nowhere near as flexible and intense as oxy-acetylene, but seems good for the kind of things we see here. I'm silver-soldering a lot of fairly light materials and it seems about right. On the other hand, there are a lot of good reasons to only have one outfit!

That was 8 years ago, so not exactly sure what I did with the copper. Just watched the video and it appears that the first piece I did was just on sheet copper with no preparation. The second piece (looks like it's square), that appears to have been wire brushed prior to brazing.

When using copper, why do you braze when soldering works just fine?
@897473
@897473 6 жыл бұрын
I prefer the gold color of brazing to the grey color of solder. Brazing also provides more strength relative to soldering. It is also just a personal choice. I'm sure some people prefer to solder.
@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 5 жыл бұрын
brazing is MUCH stronger! Actually in this case you can use things like CU-PHOS or other phosphorus bearing materials that go nicely on copper without flux, it's almost as if it were welded.

I did it a while back, repaired an exhaust brake on my small truck, I replace some rusted original parts with stainless and managed to braze it back together. I think the trick is to use a good correct flux.
@leonardpearlman4017

Black Flux is helping me, and Easy-Flo 3 silver solder. Have had a lot of failures that I think were caused by too much heat, going right PAST the magic point where the flux is all melted and watery and the metal has become cleaned, and just burning everything up. When it works it's nice! Fair color match and very strong.
