I remember my elderly babysitter making this battered hamburger steak patty for me only one time. It made such an impression on me and I tried so hard to explain how wonderful it was to my mama, but I've never eaten it again since then. You took me way back to a happy memory.😊

This is the way in the Netherlands Dutch people cook. My Oma & Mama and me my kids and my grandkids. Only we make lovely gravy with the juice from the steak wde cooked it in butter and not in oil. We still cook that way. And live already 26years in Alberta. It brought me back when my grandma and mom are teaching me. You can even put graded cheese and real bacon bits in the groundbeef. And some dryed oniins from Costco. Enjoy your meal. ❤🤗🍲

If you want your onions to last a long time place one onion in a knee high nylon stocking tie in a knot and add another onion until stocking is full maybe 5 or 6 depend on size. After your done hang on hook in pantry away from the light and when you need a onion cut from the bottom up cut below the knot will last maybe a month.

Tammy, My family is Northern by heritage, but my favorite American General is Thomas Jackson, so there's that. Anyway, my wife and I cooked this entire meal and it is PHENOMENAL! It disappeared like Jackson took Howard at Chancellorsville. We subbed in Broccoli for the asparagus. Also, we took the cooked onions and draped them over the stewed potatoes Great job, Chef. Outstanding recipe for a cold evening.

I grew up eating breaded hamburger steaks just like this. Mama also made new potatoes w/gravy, that's what we called it. I don't like corn starch, I use flour to thicken. I probably just don't know how to use cornstarch because everything I use it in, turns out slimy or jelly like. I love watching you cook.

Tammy that was fun watching you cook. Everything looks delicious. Years ago when I was raising my children I had a recipie for mock fried chicken steak and basically the only difference was I used crushed saltine cracker crumbs and put chopped onions and worstershiser sauce, salt and pepper and half the crumbs in the meat patties. Yours look so good I hope to try this. Thank you.😊

Veronica, Thank you for that historic culinary reference as I would not have guessed at cultural origin. I am certain you'd manage it better in the pan as I lacked the skill to flip it without disturbing the batter crust. Who ever came up with the concept ought to get an award, the flavors married up perfectly. We used thyme, garlic powder, and marjoram in the rub, then breaded and fried. Just amazing.

Our family have always made this but we would also make a brown gravy from the pan dripping not too much not too thick. After removing the hamburger sneaks to make the gravy then put the sneak back in the gravy for a few minutes cover very low heat while finishing preparing the rest of the meal. It was always easier to eat for younger kids and no tooth adults. Potatoes stew my mom save half of the potatoes water starch to make the sauce adding just one TBL of corn starch or flour, milk and butter. she would give the potatoes just one or two smash down which help thicken the sauce.

I wanted to say, I tried this hamburger patty recipe and we loved it. It really kept the meat moist! We’ve done it several times since. Thanks for the share! I always just smooshed some of the taters a bit and added some milk, cream, h&h or canned milk- whatever’s on hand to my stewed taters - not much mind ya, just a a glug to a full pot or a splash to a small one like yours. Of course some butter n seasoning. I’ll admit, since I’ve been cooking for an empty nest, I do have issues with making too much. Getting better at it tho

It was the one and only time he didn’t really care for what I cooked, and I haven’t cooked them since. 🤗

My Mama always made stewed potatoes when we had sauerkraut and hot dogs. My kids loved it and my husband and I still eat it 🥰😍

I've never had stewed potatoes...did she put the milk and cornstarch mixture into the potatoes that still had the cooking water? It looked like she did to me, but wasn't sure.

When you say you shop at Bealls is it Bells or Bealls. Our Bealls here in Texas changed its name to Stage and then went out of business. It used to be Palais Royal before it became Bealls. We do have Ross, Marshall’s, and Home Goods. Just wondering.

I think it may be an eastern NC thing, but we make stewed potatoes with butter and ketchup added for a bit once they are mostly stewed down. Yum! We call them “red potatoes”.

I will most definitely be making these. I'm like you, Tammy; I don't have trouble cooking for just 2 people or for a bunch of people. I don't depend on recipes and just do country cooking like mama taught me. Only time I use recipes is if I'm making a cake or pie.
