Again, this is how I learned to ride, from my old BMX days. It’s funny when people watch me ride by, cruising, but standing on the pedals. I don’t stay seated while hitting those rough spots. I stand and ride it out. I have more control that way. It’s just how I learned and I am more comfortable standing, much of the time..Funny how those old BMX lessons still apply to me. I’m not claiming that my way is the right way for anyone other than myself, but standing up has always helped me to navigate the rough stuff a whole lot better. Man, I do enjoy the riding vids. So much to see in navigation. Quick decisions, etc. I’ve been binge watching these vids and enjoying them. It’s all about the ride. To heck with a bunch of gear. Get a decent ride and get out there. All the money in the world won’t make anyone a better rider, and that’s a fact.

Sometimes when riders get together it's the bike equivalent of a car show where everyone wants to show off what they got. I like seeing new stuff, someone has some new bars or pedals it's great to learn about what's out there, but it can get just plain silly. We're riding a bicycle after all not piloting the space shuttle. Think about that guy you saw at a club rocking the ugliest shirt you ever saw, he's owning it proudly. People notice the shirt, but the way he owns it makes it work. You don't need a $3k bike to be cool, just ride the trail and rock it!

Use the sram tire pressure calculator. it give you options. You can get some magura or shimano mt400 xc brakes for cheap these days(under 100 for the set) or put a bigger rotor up front and see if that makes it better. It also would be cool to talk about how that bike compares to your gravel bike geo wise.

Single-speeds make the best group ride bike because everyone else has all the excuses when you pass them: you’re on a hardtail, you have less suspended mass, your bike is more efficient in the climbs, I had a heavy lunch, etc. etc.

I think it might also work the other way. Anecdotally, I would say a good percentage of people who ride the North Shore have full suspension bikes with somewhere between 140-160mm of travel. One day, I felt like I'd had a pretty good run down a trail named Pingu on Mount Seymour on my 150mm bike. I was taking a quick break before the next trail, and a bunch of guys showed up on a mix of short travel hardtails and single speeds.

There's expensive equipment to go along with any sport. I've felt the same way: conscious of what other people might think of my equipment. Eventually if you have enough fun with what you're using, all worries fade away. It also turns out that MTB folks are usually pretty chill about what you choose to bring to the trail; who would've guessed?

If you want to drop your friends on climbs, ride singlespeed. There's one speed but there are a few actual speeds; sitting pedaling, standing pedaling, walking & pushing and stopped. You learn there's more speeds in the technical short punches by how much torque you generate. You WILL learn how to generate this extra gear with this torque explosion. Nothing feels better than blasting😢past the crux and finishing the mundane step for someone in first gear.

Kudos to you Matty for breaking the "rules". I think you also really hit the nail on the head with the attitude that riding is supposed to be about having FUN, not about if you are riding the latest and greatest tech bike. I also am in the market for a good hardtail and hadn't considered Priority bikes before. Looks like they have a model the 600X that fits all the check marks of what I would want in a long lasting hardtail with a belt drive thanks to it having a Pinion gearbox! Even though you weren't intentionally reviewing the bike you were on, it did make me go check out their website , so thanks!

my friends ask me if they need an expensive MTB to try riding trails for the first time and I always tell em: "If you already have an MTB then ride what you have" it ain't about going fast the first time, you just have to enjoy it. If they enjoy it and they still feel lacking or they wanna go deeper then that's the time to look into upgrades.

Hell, we didn’t have suspension when I started rough riding. I’ve ridden a tatty looking well maintained Nukeproof Scout 29er for years and enjoyed every minute. Cheap to maintain and re-equip, simple to clean, weighs bugger all, is a great workout and pretty much goes anywhere. Yes, I probably miss out on peak performance (whatever that is for the average rider) from not having a long downhill rig or a full suss enduro but I still ride the same trails. The grin factor is high, the fitness and riding skills are kept high. It is certainly a simpler life.

@user-gr7rq2rq6s 7 ай бұрын
yeah but to get a SS rigid only for a subset of trails one can ride on, in the front range, it's actually less simplicity than just get a suspension bike that is well suited for a wider range of trails.

Not sure re there being 'rules' in Mt Biking so to speak, so much as an inherent desire within Mt Biking on the whole to "keep up with the Jones"! Not going to sit here and say i currently have a 'budget' bike to be out there anymore on (both my bikes are in the mid-high 'Amish' to high end Emtb bike range re quality), though when I got back into MTB a couple of years ago after about 10+ years gap, it was on a 2nd hand first gen Giant Reign that I got off a friend for $150. That bike was fantastic despite being 15+ years old - just did everything well. Since upgraded to two new full suspension bikes (ones my own Fuel EX, and the other ones a prototype e-bike I'm 'long term trialing' for a friend), i have to say that modern full suspension bikes are where I'm at now that I'm in my early 50's - as they are just so dam good now days, and trail noise shit just hurts my butt too much otherwise (hey, I'm getting old! LOL). Where I'm going though, is ride what you want to ride, and just enjoy it for YOU while you do. If you want to ride a rigid MTB, ride it, full suss, ride it, Emtb, ride it, hard tail, ride it, single speed, sure why not, we might question your sanity, but you'll be too near to a cardiac arrest to worry if/when we do give you grief, so it won't matter by then anyway!! Ride what you want i say .... just as long as it's not a gravel bike!! - 30 odd years of Mt bike "DEVELOPMENT" and people want to go backwards just to ride faster in a straight line on something that is twitchy and likely to prevent you EVER having children with top tubes that high whiel riding on dirt. That's like having the latest cell phone options in front of you, and instead opting to use a 'Carrier Pigeon' to deliver your messages "just because" (and then hitting yourself in the center of any mans universe just to add insult to injury re that top tube height thing!). Gravel bikers should put their road tires on and go road riding on those things, and just leave the Mt's to MT Bike's! ;) (PS - in case you missed it, I think gravel bikes are pointless, and just another way bikes companies are using that 'keep up with the Jones' vibe within cycling to sell more bikes, as while almost no-one will admit that they are daft, people WILL buy them as someone else might get one first otherwise, and they can't be left out!) 🤪
