"Breakfast on a shovel" Is it worth visiting the Cornwall Gold and Tolgus Mill?

Join us as we continue to explore Cornwall, looking for entertaining, budget friendly days out. In today's video we visit Cornwall Gold, an attraction near Portreath with free parking, dog friendly and lots to do! And who wouldn't want a breakfast fit for a miner on a budget day?
We explore the new exhibition at Cornwall Gold, near Portreath. It celebrates the site's past as a Tin Mill, which is different to a Tin Mine. There is also a museum to explore showing the former tin streaming industry. You can also try your hand at panning or browse the jewellery range, some of which include tin!
After exploring the attraction, we walk to Portreath, a coastal resort with large beach and harbour. Bur exactly what did they get up to in the harbour in years gone by?
NB: In the video, we said that the Bal Maiden, Minnie Daniels was 102 when the interview was recorded. She was in fact, 100 years old. Apologies!

We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZfaq, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.

Been there a couple of times but it looks like it's changed a lot. I remember they had James Bond's Aston Martin there on display! Portreath is lovely too. I spent one holiday finding all the Holy Wells, Standing Stones & Fogous in Penwith & the surrounding areas. All it cost was the price of the petrol (which was a lot cheaper back then!). Another lovely afternoon out & not very well known is ''Tanglewood'' near Penzance. It was £5 I think at the time...situated in a wooded valley & created over many years by the family who live there, which has been turned into a fabulous themed walk with a quirky surprise around every corner! Ideal for children too with hidden trampolines, things to make you jump & giggle & lots of fun to explore & enjoy. Love this series of days out in Cornwall you are doing!😃x J x

Morwenstow, free parking at Rectory farm, tearoom, or the Bush Inn 4 miles ish circular walk cross farmland down to hire sharp nose point back to the church, taking in Hawkers hut a lot of history, good day out

Hi Sarah and Andrew, I went to Cornwall Gold Back in the 1990s with my parents, who are sadly no longer here, we did panning for gold, and I still have that gold today. That breakfast looked delicious 😋, Thank you for the memories, 👍👍

It's Richard Tangye but the g is pronounced as in 'Tan-gee' not tangy..... Love the breakfast, my dad worked at Portreath Harbour when it was a coal yard and he was one of the local delivery men before all the houses were built. Enjoy your walks with the doggies! 👍❤️

That was a great day out in my opinion. I am amazed and horrified by all the tunnels in the mines. Imagine how it would feel to work down there in this labyrinth deep down in the ground 😳 Let alone having to fear the dangers of collapsing tunnels and flooding and all the dust. But I guess they had to make a living. But lovely to listen to this old lady who worked as a bal maiden. So great that they have been able to get a recording from a first hand experience 😊 Thank you for this lovely video 😍

@@gordonsimpson3235 I'm not exactly sure on the particular point of property law, but I think many houses coming up for sale in heavily mined areas are currently obliged to have a 'mineralization report/declaration' within their survey.

Hi Sarah and Andrew, I liked the video very much. We visited Cornwall Gold five years ago. The new exhibtion is very interesting. Nice to see it now. The old lady's contribution is fascinating. You are lucky in gold digging:)). My husband was really jealous of Andrew's big portion on the shovel:)). I had to laugh. I'm glad Andrew enjoyed it. You could see the joy. You did well with the prices for the food. It's so nice when you show me familiar places in Cornwall. The beach at Portreath is lovely, and a wonderful area with lots of history to walk around. The two dogs are so cute together. The little one is a real model. Our next holiday will definitely be Cornwall again. Devon was interesting once too, but Cornwall has my heart:)). Hi Sarah and Andrew - great video as always, thank you! More inland, there is a lovely short walk between Restormel Castle and the Duchy nursery/cafe near Lostwithiel. You can start either end but parking is free and unrestricted at the castle so may be better to start there (the nursery is not keen on very long-term stays in their car park). The castle is English Heritage and entrance is about £6 per person for non-members (free for members). A really interesting building with great views and a fascinating history, and well preserved and presented by EH. Then, a beautiful, peaceful 1.25 mile walk through meadow and woodland up to the Duchy nursery which has a fabulous cafe and great food. The menu is reasonably priced with selections for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. The castle, walk and food, plus a look around the well stocked nursery and gift area, would probably take about minimum 3 hours and could easily fall within the "below £25" budget - or less if you just want a cup of coffee or tea. There is a pdf of the walk on the nursery website. We love your videos and they are our go-to guide and reference when planning our Cornwall breaks, so please keep on posting! Cheers, Roy and Pat

I've been to Cornwall Gold a couple of times in the past and it was always an enjoyable day out. Wheal Martyn Clay Works, St Austell, was also an enjoyable day out. There is an entry charge but on full price tickets you then get free entry for the year. Family tickets are also available. There are picnic spots within the grounds so you can take your own food - or you could when I was last there! Could that be an option for you to look at? It's also doggie friendly 🙂

Brilliant Exhibition “Pure Gold” and very unique, The Bal Maidens in ‘Poldark’ had a very hard time earning a living, and their working clothes were no where near has pristine as the outfit you so elegantly displayed Sarah, that breakfast on a shovel was to die for, I couldn’t believe Andrew ate the large one how does he keep looking so slim! this is another very interesting find full of the amazing history of Cornwall, just love Andrews comment on Portreath’s nude bathing attraction….. Sorry Sarah as you say just the seagulls! 😂🤣😂🤣😂

This is a super video again, Cornwall Gold will not disappoint, you will have a super day out with lots to do. The new exhibition has had such a lot of thought put into it and we loved it. The jewellery counters are nice to look at and the workshop for repairs and remodelling is worth looking at. The ‘Pantry’ will keep you fed and watered with a good choice of food. Lovely walk to Portreath where the scenery is quite timeless- A really good day out. Thanks Andrew and Sarah - 10/10

I was near Portreath last week and my husband and I have looked at the walk along the old Tram way and along to Tehidy but were unsure of what it was like, this has really helped and we will be back next June with our pushbikes to try this one out after seeing your video. Loved todays video near to Portreath. Thank you. We went to Cornish Gold many years ago. It has improved a lot since then. The restaurant looks light and roomy and what a delicious looking breakfast. I've read quite a few fictional books about the mines, the Bal Maidens and their families of that time. It puts me in mind of Poldark. I'm watching that series again for about the third time! Can't get enough of it, especially the scenery. By the way Sarah, you suit the Bal Maiden's dress but I can't imagine it looked as pristine in those days - such back breaking work. The old lady who did the narration spoke like my Grandmother did. True Cornish dialect. Thanks again. 💕

Loved it amazing value! I’ve never been to Cornwall or the UK were my family ancestors came from .. the Warren side of my mum’s family were from St Just, & went to South Australia to Burra to the copper mining area, before going to the goldfields .. from what I found the ancestral grandfathers were blacksmiths rather than miners, an equal important role. My great grandfather had a blacksmiths shop in Melbourne, & his wife was a local midwife with the street with their cottage named after Emma We love your video’s, thank you

Have you been to Lappa valley. Unfortunately not a budget day out but an interesting place to visit. Just outside of St Newlyn East the miniature railway takes you to East Wheal Rose site of the worst mining disaster in Cornwall where 39 drowned after the mine filled up with water after a flash flooding in July 1846. There is a preaching pit in St Newlyn East in memory of those who drowned.

Oh how interesting! We will have a look and find some more info, stories or accounts in our books! We were really lucky when we went. The children were younger and Lappa Valley were celebrating an anniversary, and reduced their prices to the same as the day they opened, so we only paid a £1 or so to enter! Really interesting video. Haven't been there for many years. I first went when it was just callef Tolgus Tin, back in 1975 or '76. I went there with my then girlfriend, we saw a "Win a Mini" competition where you had to visit 5 or 6 local attractions and you could then enter a prize draw to win a mini. Other attractions on the list included Paradise Park, Wendron Forge (now known as Poldark Mine) and place in Goldsithney called "World of Mechanical Musìc" or something like that. All the places were fascinating, but we didn't get the mini.

Interesting museum! Displays like this with interactive aspects are great and encourage kids to learn about the past. The tunnel map really brought it home; how many thousands lived most of their lives underground, working in danger and darkness. I think the Poldark novels (and series) helped make the rest of the world aware of this history. It did for me, here on the other side of the world. Gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill (near Sacramento, California) in 1848. After the Gold Rush, much of the "placer" gold in that could be panned from rivers and streams was depleted, so people turned to mining, hence the California Stamps you mentioned. With the historic rains and flooding we've had this year, I've been reading that 2023 will be the year of the new 'gold rush'. The shovel breakfast was a hoot!

I have to admit I haven't been to Cornwall for about 15years now and I have been reminiscing the places I have visited there through your films. I have been lucky enough to have been right round the coast and I have to admit The Lizard is my favourite part of the county, but like yourselves I do like to restrict my spending when out and about I really must kick myself into gear and get back to Cornwall. Thank you both for all your work in making all these marvellous films.

What an amazing day out, and worth every penny! ~ so love a Cornish mines heritage site. Had no idea the average lifespan of a Cornish minor was 29 yrs, even by 1865 ~ how incredibly hard their lives were. The Cornwall Gold site is beautifully layed out, and it's definitely on the to do list for my Autumn trip. The recorded voice of 100yr old Minnie Daniels is an absolute gem for posterity. Given the stories about the muscles, I bet there was no messing with her in her heyday! You make a very fair bal maiden yourself Sarah, and I enjoyed the family history link with your uncle. My only disappointment...no man skinny-dipping in the harbour🙂
