"Longlegs" lives up to the hype, and more. Tim Grierson of Screen International is back for a review of this buzzed-about indie. This deeply disturbing horror movie stars Maika Monroe as an FBI agent in 1990s Oregon who's on the hunt for a serial killer who has terrorized the community for decades. He goes by the name Longlegs, and Nicolas Cage plays him in an unnerving performance that's sure to provide nightmare fuel. Written and directed by Osgood Perkins. Co-starring Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt. In theaters July 12.

Seriously I am really curious about this film because Oz Perkins has become quite the horror auteur in the last few years which is awesome to behold! Wish his father were still alive to see his accomplishments. Another brilliant artist that found his niche in horror.

I was so ready to love this movie. But walked away wishing it were as good as it could have been. The pacing was like: build up build up, nothing not high or low just a flat line. Then that is repeated to the end of the movie. It's like the dread and anticipation gets better and better but the results of all those moments don't do anything. Maybe I have to watch it again with different expectations.

Spoilers. The second the two FBI pulled into the neighborhood at the beginning I knew Agent Redshirt was a dead man. This movie was extremely predictable, and worse: it actively gave its "secrets" away at each and every earliest opportunity which removed all suspense, or interest for that matter. The psychic schtick lasted approximately as long as the scenes it was introduced in, and was then almost completely ignored. The characters all seemed to be on the same quirkily half-speed overdramatic wavelength which made all the performances blend together. The exceptions were Detective Supervisor Man who was completely boilerplate until the end, and NicC who was as ridiculous as his costume. When they ultrasounded the doll brain Satan mcguffin was a real eye rolling moment too. I give it a 3.2/10 and a Hail Satan for the artsy cinematography and a couple of subtle, fleeting images. Save it for a cold and dreary night at home maybe? Or not.

I don’t think the psychic element was meant to be literal. It was mainly because of the trauma she suffered as a kid and growing up with longlegs in the basement. She had this feeling of truth in her unconscious, that’s why she knew something terrible was coming and the truth was in her hands.

5/5 for me. As someone who watches a lot of 🎥s and watches a lot of horror I’m amazed to say this is the scariest/most terrifying 🎥 I’ve seen in years. It’s because it’s all atmosphere and doesn’t go for cheap jump scares. The tension/scares are earned because it just can’t help but get under your skin. Every-time we get a wife shot I’m just looking at the background going “what the fuck is that?”. I did my best to avoid knowing anything about it. Maika Monroe is great, Nicolas Cage is terrifying and Alicia Witt (as a giant “Urban Legend” fan) is great too. Elevator pitch is a satanic “Silence of the Lambs”. After the 🎥 we all were walking out as a whole going “WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!!!”. Closing credits 🎵 was PERFECT.

Honestly, I didn't find it scary or discomforting at all. Perhaps I'm just desensitized to horror at this point. It was interesting, and beauitfilly shot with great sound design and acting, but it was so monstrously predictable. All of the answers are given to you from the first scene. I was hoping my early conclusion would be subverted. Alas, it was exactly as I had guessed. In all honestly, this movie was more darkly funny than frightening. The atmosphere was spot on, though. The trailers/teasers are better than the movie.

I liked this movie a whole lot. It'll likely be on my Best Movies of 2024 list! But one simple thing in this film could've made the movie even better. The opening credits essentially gave away one of the film's "mysteries" by giving you a fairly short list of the principal cast. While it wasn't a "whodunit" type of scenario in the realm of Agatha Christie, the Law of Economy of Characters gave away a rather major plot point in those credits, far earlier in the film than it needed to. Had the opening credits not given it away up front, the story would've had more dramatic tension to its reveal.

This looks like my cup of tea but I will say I got disheartened when it was said that there is a lot of Clarice Starling, GWTDT, Seven, and Zodiac. I love all those films, I just wish that modern movies wouldn't rely on tropes or knowledge or even subtle references to past greats. We need to be making new memories and new masterpieces, new icons and new art, so that in 25 of 30 years, critics can be saying of a new thriller, "There was a lot of Longlegs is this".
@musicmann1967

The Clarice Starling comparison is situational, not character based. Lee Harker is a VERY different person than Clarice Starling. They're both female FBI agents hunting a serial killer, but that's where the similarities end.

This one fizzled towards the end for me… I think it’s because I prefer horrors that deal with the darkness of humanity more than ones that have so much supernatural stuff happening that the characters just feel like puppets… and the reveals in this movie’s third act, in my opinion, let the humans off the hook just a bit too much. See The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, The Wicker Man and Midsommar for examples of the kind of resolutions which stick with me more.

I saw the much anticipated Longlegs last night. Maybe I made the mistake of watching "Pig" the previous night, which I thought was fantastic, Nicolas Cage was so great in that, I don't know how I missed seeing it when it came out. Longlegs turned out to be a big disappointment ! I didn't feel the evil, the moodiness was very good, I just think the movie kind of fell apart in part three. It tried to go in too many directions and ended up being incohesive. Nicholas Cage wasn't in it enough to be super scary, and he didn't actually do anything, it was all the mother! The black ball in the puppets head was a red herring, didn't go anywhere.
@Milos-sj6ir

Right? What the fuck was up with that ball and why didn't they open it? That should have been the last shot in the film - the lead opening it and the forces of evil rushing toward us. Or something, anything. Lame film throughout though, more plot holes than Swiss cheese. Even to the point that the characters don't feel a bad smell from bodies that have been decomposing for a month. Puh-lease.

Doesn't surprise me there's alot of Clarice Sterling in this cause of Silence of the lambs film being made in the 90s. I'm defantly seeing it for the David Fincher feel cause I was a huge fan of his Mindhunter series which freaked me out.

Christy, help me understand… I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. I found this movie utterly ridiculous. Nic Cage was at his Nic Cagiest, which I think was more distracting than anything. What bothered me most was that no part of Cages actions made any sense. Why send the letters? Why give Lee the key to solving the code? What was the significance of the dates? To make a pentagram? That was it? This movie dropped the ball on almost everything right down to the exposition dump at the end. Blecch.

I interpreted the point of the letters as his way to maneuver everyone into the conclusion of the movie. He needed everything to come full circle to fulfill a prophecy and die for Satan.

I wanted to like this film so much more than I did! Maybe it was the overhyping, maybe I'm just over the satanic angle at this point, but this was a let down for me. Still a good film, and I enjoyed Cage as always. Just didn't connect with this on the level that others have seemed too. At any rate, I'm glad an original horror film like this is making money! Good for the genre and film at large.

How does LONGLEGS compare to the first season of TRUE DETECTIVE? The film's trailer has an otherworldliness to it, of tribal folklore impeding on humanity's sprawling daily life, causing questions about the worth of our existence. Do black stars rise and cloud waves break as twin suns sink behind the lake? Vague, poetic generalities in your answers are welcome.

I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere a few days ago at the Egyptian Theater and I was disappointed. In my opinion the movie did not live up to the hype. I thought it lacked atmosphere and I never felt "in the presence of evil," as your friend put it. I don't understand when people call it disturbing or terrifying. It's neither of those things. Horror movies today are soft popcorn nonsense. There's a few directors, like Eggers and Aster, doing good horror today. Perkins is not in that conversation. His main problem is he lacks the ability to write a solid and cohesive screenplay. That's been the issue with all of his work. Yes, he's a very visual filmmaker. His films always look incredible, BUT they also feel like incomplete scripts. I thought Maika was good, but Nic Cage was doing, well, Nic Cage shit. He was already a bit distracting with the prosthetics, but once he started with his shenanigans, he just took me out of the movie. And I wasn't the only one. I saw a lot of people giggling every time he popped up on screen. I didn't buy him as the satanic serial killer he's supposed to portray and that's that.

I disagree with this war on exposition by critics. It's bad for cinema, because it encourages inept writing. Art movies today are slow and incoherent. The exposition you mentioned did nothing at all to diminish the viewing experience. That's what it should be about. Does the moment work or not? That's it. Otherwise, it's critiquing by some sort of point system, like a school teacher grading a paper. That's not how film criticism should be because movie viewing is more about instinct. If anything, that sequence of exposition was one of the few interesting moments in Longlegs. The movie is slow and pretentious. Also, if you're going to dismiss exposition, you'd have to dismiss pretty much all films from the classic era. Films like Casablanca, Vertigo, The Wizard of Oz, Citizen Kane, etc. all lean heavily on exposition. Those are bad movies??

@@eyeswidevideo because spoiler-free reviews exist. And before a movie officially hits theaters, spoiler-free reviews made by people who got to see the movie early are the most prevalent type of review. The vast majority of people who haven’t seen the movie yet want to watch the SPOILER-FREE reviews to know if the movie is good or not and other aspects of the movie without giving away important parts of the story. SPOILERS* Just saw this. Its silence of the lambs meets a fincher movie meets some sort of possession movie... except every one in the movie is a EFFING IDIOT and miserable and Maika, cannot even smile so its all just grim grim unfunny and more grimness ... She also lives in a weird cabin in the woods... and doesnt report a weird strange invasion to the house with a code break delivered during said home invasion, and she works for the FBI!!!! And then nicholas cage shows up and its a comedy. Hey we need to investigate your mum after the barn but no... just you go talk to her! Just you. BLAIR UNDERWOOD'S daughter in this movie, BEFORE getting the doll. This family HAS NO FRIENDS so she's home just celebrating her birthday with her parents. SO CONVIENIENT FOR THIS DUMB PLOT. And Maika is standing there and letting Blair go the kitchen to kill his wife? Because he literally makes a joke about them going to the kitchen so he can kill her.... And you can hear her comedic screams while being stabbed in the kitchen. Its a effing stupid comedy. God so frustrating, are we meant to be like "OMFG so scary?". This movie falls apart because of how stupid it is. And of course, the plot was going to end at their house because its a real case of Chekhov's birthday girl.
