Published today in Nature Scientific Data, GeoMAP is like a Wikipedia of Antarctic geology, uniting all the historical and existing geological data of Antarctica into one place ❄️🏔️
Why is this important? Antarctica is not just ice. Over 52,000 km2 of exposed rock make up the mountains and surfaces of the continent. And simply, rocks play an important role in - and tell us a lot about - the complex interaction of land, atmosphere, and climate.
This data is open and free for anyone to use and will support a range of #Antarctic research, from #ecology, to #climate science, to #geology.
GeoMAP was made possible through an international collaboration led from Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) by GNS Science, involving experts from the USA, Norway, Italy, UK, Australia, Russia, and New Zealand 🤝🌐
