I think the biggest mistake Gus made was not recognizing Walt's need for power and respect. He tried to turn him into Gale, but Walt would never settle for being second in anything, not after his history. And fundamentally, Walt had something Gus couldn't do without. If Gus had taken Walt into his confidence, made him a full partner, not just an employee, maybe they could have fixed their differences in a more reasonable way.

This is the moment when Gus started to have great respect for Walt. Before, he saw Walt as reckless and not worth the risk, but once Walt figured everything out, and was frank enough to calmly discuss everything with Gus face to face, Gus knew he wanted Walt to continue working for him. Unfortunately, the instability of Jesse corroded that, and after the episode, "Box Cutter," Walt became the unstable one while Jesse proved he could be reliable. Then, Walter White became as evil incarnate as they come what with the hunger for power, the prison hits, and capping Mike, but before all that, he poisoned a child to get Jesse back on his side. My favorite scene is Hank and Walt in Hank's garage. Eh, who cares?

Movie star money. National sports athlete money. But this is one of the moments where it becomes clear that it was never truly about the money for Walt. It was about him needing to be the boss, the big head honcho, and needing to have the respect and fear and power that goes along with it. What a brilliant series.

Mike is wrong though. What sets up the conflict is Walt wanting to protect Jesse after Gus' guys killed a child. Possibly on Gus' say so. The other thing that sets up the conflict is that Gus needs Hank dead and Walt desperately wants him not-dead. In this situation, unlike so many others, Walt is actually driven by protectiveness for the people in his life. And it's frankly rather hypocritical for Mike to take such issue with that given he too is so often motivated by the exact same thing. Hell, at the moment he says this he's just spent several episodes being super protective of Jesse, the guy supposedly not worth Walt's protection.

@eggynack
@eggynack 2 жыл бұрын
@@davedarius7346 Jesse was right too though. Using child assassins is really awful, and killing children is, y'know, worse. Jesse was in the right in murdering the drug dealers. The person who was in the wrong here was Gus. Gus' solution to the problem was either to just be like, "No more kids," or to order the child killed. So, either deep negligence or active awfulness. Jesse could have theoretically entrusted Gus to handle the problem, and that'd be Gus' preferred solution, but Gus had already shown himself untrustworthy on this matter. The cause for the rift in the relationship is that Gus is a control freak and egomaniac who would throw a fit over one of his employees killing a child murderer without his say so. He could have just chilled the hell out, not try to do a kill and replace on Walt or a search and destroy on Jesse, chalk the conflict up to being the cost of employing child killers, and moved on with his life.
@dougdoug9223

@@eggynack Jesse being right in that situation doesn't negate the fact that his actions caused the rift between Walt and Gus. There are so many things to blame Walter for but that situation wasn't one of them at all
@eggynack

@@dougdoug9223 But Gus' actions preceded Jesse's. He acted super unethically in a way that would invariably lead to a breakdown of the relationship. I'm not sure why we have to lend an air of inevitability to Gus' principals, that he must always have final say regarding the goings on within his organization, but not to Jesse's principals, that child murder is bad. Everyone had choices in this situation. I would say Gus made the worst ones

Yeah, but the Feds likely would have caught up to them eventually. Few if any organized crime bosses manage to die as an old man in bed having never served in prison. Still they might have had a very good run for a decade or two before someone critical to their operation got caught and turned or a new cartel arose that muscled in on them. Gus had a good run, but even great strategists make mistakes at times that they can't recover from like overconfidently gloating over an enemy willing to kill himself to take revenge on you.

Gus got revenge but it was beyond that. Either they would all be dead and a good chance of Gus operation continuing even after his death or they will be dead and Gus owns it all. Except for that one loose end of Walter White. Hector was another but a paralyzed loose end who has no resources left to even hope for revenge. Gus was shocked and enraged that Hector would go to the DEA. In Gus mind that was something Hector would never do and he was correct. Had Gus thought a little more about the near impossibility of Hector ever becoming a rat then he might have seen the hand behind it luring him in. Hector had nothing to lose except his family name and would have died beaten by Gus before he would have destroyed his name cooperating with the DEA. Brilliantly played even without Max death at Hectors hands Gus would have still been blinded by the thought Hector has went and ratted him out. The lowest and only move that is completely off the table. I always wonder what would have happened had Mike not been injured and out of the picture. I dont see Mike not finding the bomb he would be so thorough and spooked at the thought of Schrader having what he needs to come after them big time with what Hector could have told them but no way they would leave Hector in the breeze like that if he had. So If he didnt rat then what's going on? Mike would not have been blinded by emotion even though he had a past with Hector it wasnt as scorched earth blood enemies as Hector and Gus. but regardless Mike would have searched everything.
