Some people look back and think the family stuff is the boring part of the show, I think it's briliant. The perspectives of different family members are so real. I honestly still can't find flaws in this show, if anything, it got better, the more I think about it.

Like Walt, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. Most people don't live past 5 years and those discussions and decisions about whether to have treatment are very real. It wasn't a question of money, rather how he wanted to live out the time that he had left. I don't think there is a right or a wrong answer. My dad chose to give it everything he had and take every treatment. He made it 6 years. If he had chosen to do nothing I don't think we would have held it against him. It was his choice to make.

I think Jesse and Walt get along so well in these early episodes because Jesse's one of the few people who isn't treating him with pity. He's being direct with Walt and treating him like a person whereas everyone else is treating Walt like a... problem...

I knew this TV series would be perfect for Marijke to react to, due to its moral ambiguity and questionable actions. I think Marijke excels when chacracters and plot put you in that moral grey area, where you can understand both sides of the argument. i have recently realized that i may have to consider this option. while i am not dealing with cancer, i am not very sure that i am ready to spend the remainder of my years in debilitating pain. i spoke to an old friend about it and while she didn't want me to go through with it (if i decide to do so) she at least told me that she understood why i may feel this way and would not think any less of me if i hit the big red button. i am exploring other avenues of dealing with my issues. but should they not pan out, i would be ok with taking care of business. i feel that if a person is approaching the situation rationally and is making decisions based on good information and logic, then it's up to them to determine the threshold for what can be called "good enough" for their life. and should they decide that they've had enough, and they are doing so out of practicality or due to a "quality of life" issue, then we should allow the person to retain what dignity they might be able to salvage. if the worst should happen, i would be (regrettably) leaving behind 3 daughters, and 7 grandchildren. but i would rather have them remember me as a laughing, strong, vital man that strode down the sidewalk like a king, rather than an old, broken down geezer, stuck in a spiral of constant pain and misery.

"So he's basically done now, right ?" Oh sweet Mary. First of all that was 15k for Jessie + 35 for the pound, so 17.500 each, so the 17.500 is also the only amount that Walt gets to himself, but even if we were to assume that Walt would pocket the whole 50k, prices for chemotherapy vary greatly depending on various factors from type of cancer to whether or not there is after-care or even medication included. So, while the "basic package" might start somewhere around 10k, you can be sure that it doesn't include some mandatory expenses, so the real figure will be a lot higher. And this is only part of the story, we haven't talked about what happens, if Walt was so ill, that he couldn't work anymore. Yes, it might be unlawful to terminate him, because of it, but there is always an angle and going to court would need further funds (many don't try, because they have other things to do, like the whole "trying not to die"-thing). All of that while they were already struggling to maintain their current situation. Somewhere in the ballpark of a low to mid 6-figures number would be a safe assumption in Walt's case. In short: While 50k is far from nothing, in the grand scheme it is also far from enough.

@@Cyrinil142 Pretty simple, the idea being that you cover your own expenses, instead of partially covering everyone going to a doctor ever. Pretty much a hypochondriac is throwing away your money under that theory.

Just so you know, that thing with Walter and Gretchen isn't a thing about them having an affair or anything like that. It can be easy to miss, but she was the lady in the flashback where they're discussing what makes up a human. This show is so cleverly written. The chemistry lesson Walt gives at 17:44 is a metaphor for the change within himself: "Explosions are the result of chemical reactions happening almost instantaneously. And the faster reactants-- the faster they undergo change, the more violent the explosion." A metaphor for how the rapid changes in Walt's life (his illness, chemo) are resulting in sudden violent behavior (blowing up Tuco's place). Also, someone was having a gorgeous hair day when she recorded this reaction. You look STUNNING. You've never looked better, which is saying a lot because girl, you always look beautiful.

Part of why this was so shocking wasn't the subject matter. It was the fact that Bryan Cranston (Walt) had just finished his run on Malcolm in the Middle as the inept sit-com comedy dad. Check out a few clips an marvel at the contrast at this show goes on. No one thought he could play this role in a way that would be believable. A few years in, no one could imagine anyone else in the role.

Also I love telling people this bc everyone always thinks New Mexico is hot desert; in the summer yes! but Albuquerque and Santa Fe are about 6000 ft in elevation so during the fall/winter/early spring, while it’s sunny outside it can actually be anywhere from 20*F to 60*F so actually it’s gets quite cold in the winter months but the sun always tricks people :). I love how the show rarely ever have characters say outright what their motivations are (which makes the show feel more 'real'), and all of the characters are in a constant state of change, which makes the show _rarely_ predictable. Even when a shocking moment that was completely unexpected happens, it can all be traced to who the characters are at that point and what their true motivations were.

Your reaction to Walt shaving his head and not explaining himself reminds me of when I shaved my head as a 16 year-old. I cut my own hair and did a bad job so out of frustration I just shaved it all off, clean. Then I went to bed and waited to surprise my mom the next morning. When she went to wake me up for school I threw back the covers and just sat there smiling at her. She stepped back, put her hand on her chest and said "What did you do!?! You didn't ask me if you could do that!" LOL. She never liked it but everyone else (including the girls, to my surprise) loved it.

I feel like Walt's reaction in the car at the end is a greater high than anything he's cooking. Pushed around all his life, meek and mild, not respected by anyone in his family, who never seem to be happy unless they're deciding the course of his life for him and resenting him keeping any action or thought from them, especially Skylar. Now, he's found his Mr Hyde, his Heisenberg, and his voice, even his look, says power. He faced down Tuco -- _and won!_ He got his money for the stolen pound, for Jesse's 'pain and suffering', a promise of up front payments, and a 2 pound per week commitment instead of just one. And, no small detail, he got to live after trashing Tuco's place, knocking him and all his crew on their backsides. Tuco has made his living reading people, judging whether they're lying. If he were ever unsuccessful at being a human lie detector, he'd have been dead long ago. When Walt was holding that pound of explosive over his head, enough to kill them all and level the building, Tuco knew he was not bluffing, that he would do it if he did not get what he wanted. Because Tuco was not dealing with Walt the meek. He was dealing with Heisenberg!!

There are actually 3 episodes left in season 1. The writer's strike that year cut season 1 short so it extends into the 1st 2 episodes of season 2. Imo, the first season is zen-like, more like a meditation on life, Walt's life, and the situation they are all facing. It's best to not get thinking too far ahead and just stay in each scene because it's important to learn the characters and their motivations, especially early on. This episode does an excellent job at building empathy for Walter and seeing his viewpoint also on the Elliot offer. Where does he go from here? If he only has 2 years best case, can he live? Is it worth it? Can he make the money he wants to? Nobody knows right now.

Tuco Salamanca... up there with Heath Ledger's (RIP) joker and Begbie from Trainspotting as one of the most insane characters on film. Bless you Marie for doing several episodes per week (instead of torturing us with 1)... you got a subscription from me for that!

Jesse is also a kidnapper, & murder too. According to the felony murder statute in the US, if someone dies in the commission of a felony, all participants in the felony can be charged with murder. First, Jesse was committed a felony cooking meth in the desert and his partner killed the first guy. Jesse can be charged. Second, Jesse and Walt kidnapped the survivor and held him hostage in their basement. Again both felonies. During the kidnapping, again which Jesse was a part of, Walt killed the second guy and thus ,Jesse is also guilty of his murder under the felony murder rule. Not to mention, he is a meth manufacturer and seller.

Episode 5 made me cry. Episode 6 had me on the edge of my seat for a solid 45 minutes. Breaking Bad is a masterclass in balancing these two extremes.

He wasn't just getting money for treatment. He was getting money for his family when he dies so 35k is a drop in the bucket at this point. No guarantee the treatment works so not sure why you think he could quit now. Oh... love your reactions. lol.

There's a movie called 'K-Pax' that I haven't actually seen reacted too here on KZfaq. I remember watching it when I was little and thinking it was such a cool movie. You should check it out. It's basically about this guy that claims he's from another planet. Obviously, people think he's crazy but there are things that happen that question if he is actually crazy. It's kind of up to the viewer to decide

I had to do 4 sessioins of chemo for my male breast cancer - honestly you just get used to feeling like shit - I still worked 40 hour shifts, but I remember leaving once early just because I had zero energy to function. I came home and slept for about 14-15 hours that day, other than that you manage

"This kicks like a mule with his balls wrapped in duct tape!" "I'm trying to visually . . . make that make sense, but --." In the metaphor, the mule is attempting to use its hind legs to remove the irritant. Similarly, to cause a horse to buck for rodeos, they wrap a tight strap low around its abdomen.

They did an excellent job making Walt's family insufferable. It hits close to home for me. Not many get to choose how they go out, fewer get to choose to die on their feet. Taking that away from someone because you want to buy time with them isn't right. Its ultimately up to them, and I think what is great about Breaking Bad is that if Walt's family just supported him instead of telling him what to do, he would have never gotten as bad as he did.

Know what's ridiculously insane about this show? Bryan Cranston's acting gets better and better and better as it goes along. It is already basically perfect in season 1 and in each season it just gets better... and better... and better.

As a cancer survivor. Twice. I can honestly say, after Chemo you’re mostly alright after a couple of days. It hurts, but the worst is to come. Third day after your session. You can barely feed yourself, if you can keep any food down at all. And all you want to do is sleep, but you can’t sleep, because the pain is so intense. You get if you’re lucky, 2-3 hours sleep a night for a week....then that week is over and you’re due for your next session. And the cycle repeats.
