Thank god! It's so refreshing to hear someone who speaks CALMLY, as opposed to so many online instructors who talk AT you. Your introductions to each lesson are clear, the information concise, and your enthusiasm and respect for each player you mention are obvious. I had virtually given up the online lesson thing, until I discovered yours! Thank you so so much man!

Great lesson. I like that you talk about notes and chords rather than fret numbers!

Thank you so much and it took me a little while to realize that initially, I was reading/using musical notation specific for fretted musicians, but it didn't apply to anyone else. The first time I compared notes with a pianist, I felt really stupid and had no idea what I was actually playing. "What note is that you're playing?" "I dunno...the seventh fret?" : ( Not long after that, I made it a quest to understand as much as I could about music theory, reading music, the fretboard, and general terminology - which I'm STILL working and learning about music daily. Rock on \m/

I really like how you show the lead stuff AND how it configures along with the chord changes.Keep that up, it's really helping me sort theory out along with my playing.I'm starting to get out of the slump I've been in for a long time...Thanks!!!

I'm basically a hack and have been playing for years mimicking other great players throughout the years either in cover and original song bands. However, ever since coming onto your channel, I've been learning more about the same guitarists playing on a whole new level. It's almost like veils are lifting.

One of the very few guys I hit subscribe for. I literally still feel like a kid when I pick up my guitar and Ive been playing over 30 yrs. and half the time cant even sit through a movie without wanting to play lol..your calm demeanor and very articulate approach lets me be that kid that ruined all my albums learning solos and songs lol. You can really tell you teach, play and listen with your heart. Good to know there are other big kids out there that still love music!!! its a gift, a craft and I am a firm believer that music chooses the real artists and musicians and shows you the difference between a technician that learns to play just for the applause. and the real musicians that say...I only have peanut butter and jelly but I finally got that amp I ve wanted and now I have good tone! and no I dont have bread...just peanut butter and Jelly LOL Thanks for taking the time to do this. :) Well done David All the best! Thank you and you're totally welcome! That makes me feel good! : ) I think music should be fun and expressive and creative - so many people are almost militant about it and strict and serious - BLAH. As soon as I heard Nuno playing with those ideas my ears zoomed in on them and I had to learn how to play it. You can easily shift them to minor and diminished sounds too, but it modifies the fingering shape when you convert them, so I just stuck with the major version for this lesson. Good luck and have fun playing around with these ideas! \m/ Rock on \m/

@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and for this comment too! I feel it's important to know what note(s) you're playing at all times. There are a lot of guitarists out there that just say "5th fret" and "9th fret" or whatever, and they really have no idea what note(s) they are playing. That's fine if you're surrounded by a bunch of tab-reading guitarists all the time, but try sitting in with a piano player, horn section, string section, or really any other musician you can imagine and as soon as someone asks "what key are you playing in" - if you say "5th fret" they're probably going to laugh at you. I can say that with authority, because that's exactly what happened to me when I was a teenager and attempting to play with a piano player. : ) Thanks again and rock on!

I think you are selling yourself short here… Here’s the thing: I am very aware of all the players that your videos are about. I started playing guitar in 1982 and I lived through all of these guys but never really got into that type of music. I think it was the hairspray and the spandex, maybe? And don’t get me started on the vocalists… LOL. I think the thing that draws me to your videos is you’re playing… Said it before and I’ll say it again… The fluidity, smoothness and technique are pretty close to impeccable. Plus your teaching mannerisms are great. So laid-back… Even though you can play everything these guys play, you remain very humble. I think you’re making great videos with valuable content and I’m going to keep watching them. Thank you very much for what you were doing and have a great day!

I learned these shapes from Paul GIlbert's playing. I would say he is Nuno's predecessor even if only by a few years. Then the tapping ideas in He-man Woman Hater, and Get the Funk Out were the next logical progression. I'm sure Paul wasn't the first to do this but I saw it from him first. Chris Impelliteri does a lot of these too.

Wicked absolutely sick dive into his arpeggios thanks Dave !! What I always thought was cool was the way that he almost arpegiates certain pentatonic patterns, his outro solo run in "pornograffiti" or in some solo fills in the song "politicalamity" one song I HIGHLY recommend you check out that really will blow your mind is nunos guest solo on Nickel backs "for the river" off of their last album "feed the machine" YES I know sounds crazy but that's him playing in that band for that 1 song! Nickel back is both famous and very infamous here in Canada, I remember when the album released and they played that song on the radio I thought when did nickel back start playing such good solos?! Haha go and give it a listen man it's a lick-bag of nunos style, I believe he even used his monstrous N7 string Washburn because nickel back often sticks to B standard tuning or drop B! * Have a good one Dave, like the recent video on boulette I can't wait to see some more underrated guys on 3 for all! such as: Richard fortus, Michael lee firkins, Pete lesperance, Ian Thornley, Phil X I could go on theirs too many hahah * Cheers from Niagara falls Canada🙏🤘 - Adam

Sounds great, David! For the non-tapped arpeggios, could you further describe the picking? (i.e. direction and which notes are hammer-ons/pull-offs) Looking forward to watching your other lessons.
@LateNightLessons
@LateNightLessons 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much and thanks for watching too! As far as the picking for these ideas and types of arpeggios, I used to use a strict alternate picking approach, but over time the "strict" side of things has loosened up a little bit, and I've noticed that sometimes I'll pluck something using two downstrokes in a row (for an accented sound), whereas in the past I would've alt picked it. As a rule of thumb for these types of licks, I generally pick notes on the lower strings (D-G string) with a downstroke, and then when I'm accessing notes on the B-high E strings, I tend to strike those with an upstroke. I guess it really depends on the arpeggio shape/fingering and the sequence I'm performing too. If it's just straight up and down the arpeggio, it's a little easier to decide how to pick it and when to mix and match between down and upstrokes. But if it's a sequenced idea (a la Gilbert, Nuno, etc...), you may have to play around with your picking direction and attack while you're putting the lick together and getting a feel for it. Good luck to you and I hope this makes sense and helps! Thanks again and rock on!

Nice one, always been a great Nuno fan! Just to clear something up, in the string skipping section what is the picking pattern? Would it be downstroke, hammer-on, downstroke, upstroke, pull-off, upstroke? I guess at those speeds you must really optimize hand motion economy.

Thank you! : ) I typically use a lot of legato when playing licks like these, and I also generally pick things using a alternate picking approach, but it's not really a "strict" alternate picking thing. I usually play around with the picking direction until I find something that's comfortable or feels natural. I guess it really depends on the fingering pattern and the overall sequence of notes too. If it's straight up and down that's one thing, but if it moves and twists around alot then I might create a weird picking pattern to accommodate. I hope this helps! \m/ ROCK ON \m/

I just noticed something that I haven't seen before: Do you always tap the top three strings with your index finger and bottom three with your middle finger?

He said on that whole album he used a Fender amp with "everything turned up to 10." His tone is way way different on the fourth record.
